dalessit - 2010-05-31 2:06 PM Good daddy day for me today.

Took my son out yesterday with his bike, took the pedals off and let him work on his balance in an empty parking lot, he got the point where he could go across the whole thing turning without putting his feet down.

Today we went to a tennis court that was being re-covered so there were no nets or posts up.  Put the pedals back on, pushed him a bit then let go and off he went.
.

This is brilliant! If we weren't in the middle of a thunderstorm, I'd take the kids out to the park and do this right now. Thanks for sharing that story, and congrats to your son!

dalessit - 2010-05-31 1:06 PM Good daddy day for me today.

Today we went to a tennis court that was being re-covered so there were no nets or posts up.  Put the pedals back on, pushed him a bit then let go and off he went.

he rode around for a bit got his bearings, figured out how to steer.  About 15 minutes in he decided to "race" his sister.

He won but didn't stop when he got to the end of the tennis court, there was about a foot drop off and he went over the handle bars onto the ground, hopped back up and said "I'm ok", "Daddy that was awesome"  We high fived, I told him Daddy has done that many times on his mountain bike, but it isn't something we should try to do.

Loaded up went to meet Sam at a park so I could get my Virtual Tri TT in (BTW Girls, the Boys overall time is about 7 minutes faster than yours...)

I did my TT, finished up the ride and had to do a nice easy run, he then rode along side me while I ran.  He told me he just needs to finish up his swimming and he's ready to race.

Hope everyone is having a great Memorial Day.

Great story, good times, Tony. Its great to see he picked it up quickly.

Wow, Kyla those pics make me feel better...they are doing what I want to do but haven't yet.

Training was great here in MD for Memorial Day.  Hot runs, fun rides, weights, a pool swim and my first OWS practice of the season.

Happy Memorial Day MG members...you are all very inspiring and you kick &%$ too, amazing!!

LOL!! OK, I am amazed at how many of you women don't just go when you need to, wherever you are!! Granted I was always sort-of a tomboy, but I have always gone pee even if there isn't a bathroom available. Funny and true story -- the Chicago Marathon 2003 was the first marathon I ran with my late father-in-law and his brother. Of course I had to pee about a mile into the race, so I ducked behind a dumpster and did my thing. He got the biggest kick out of that and never let me live it down. Hey, the guys were doing it, and darned if I'm gonna wait in a porta-potty line wasting precious time (yes, I PR'ed that race!).

I do try to time potty stops on long rides so that I can actually use a bathroom, but it doesn't always work out that way. I think peeing anywhere is a good skill to have, and I've taught it to my daughter as well.

Enjoying yet another rainy day here today with a sick kiddo (stomach flu). There is an annual bike ride going on in my backyard, The Seven Hills of Kirkland  -- there's a 40-mile ride, a metric century, and a full century. Lots of CDA peeps are riding long today. I'm thinking I'll do the metric century route of that ride for my 4-hour ride next week. Lucky me, tomorrow the forecast actually looks dry for most of the day, so I might get to do the long ride without 65 layers and without trashing my bikes.

Race report is up for "Donkeyman"

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=210536

Nothing fancy in the Tzones this year...but there was a cooler at the run turnaround if you were interested.   Good day with the team and was a lot of fun.  Came home and took a 2 hour nap.  I worked all day (10 hours) in the yard and the apartments on both Sat and Sun to get ahead of the curve with projects.  Feels good to be in front of the project list for once instead of behind it.

Hope everybody had a great weekend and remembered what today is really all about.
Thank you to all the Veterans and current Service people out there!  I appreciate what you do!

I'm Baaaaack!  Funny you are having the "pee wherever you are" conversation...if you are eating or about to eat dinner, please don't read on!  Or if you just don't want to get grossed out...

I was doing my long run this past Saturday while in Oahu, and it was hot and humid and my stomach had been bothering me since early that morning...I just had to get it done before it got too hot, though, so off I went, knowing there were about 4 bathrooms along the way, if I needed it.  Well, I was about 2 miles from the second one when my body said, if you don't find a bathroom now, you will be running with carp in your shorts!  Ugh, I was luckily running along "kahala road" where there are many 5 million dollar beach front homes and many of them have "groves" along their property. I ducked into one of the groves and did my business, felt terrible about it, but felt so much better!  No TP, but I figured, dogs and cats don't wipe, it'll be fine!  Hope it fertilizes the plants Embarassed

Other than having some stomach issues (I believe it might have been food or water bacteria), the trip was awesome, I ate too much, but somehow weigh the same as when I left.  I guess running 37 miles over there helped offset all of the malassadas and umbrella drinks

Hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day festivities.

Here are my May totals including today's ridiculously long trainer ride.

May's totals:
Bike:19h 22m  - 330.65 Mi
Run:15h 32m 41s  - 115.3 Mi
Swim:11h 40m  - 26300 Yd

Here are my May stats.  Nothing too excited.  Lost a good part of the last week to a training class and the holiday weekend.

May's totals:
Bike:11h 38m 16s  - 225.53 Mi
Run:7h 41m  - 58.42 Mi
Swim:8h 10m 58s  - 22950 Yd
Strength:1h 30m

From reading the posts, it sounds like many of you slacked off a lot less than I did over the long weekend...you animals!

Beer with Clamato...uhhh, no.
Key Lime yogurt...we have it here and the wife loves it.
Learning to ride the bike without pedals...very cool technique.
7 hour bike rides and 2K swims...that's what triathletes are made of!
Girls peeing...always fun to read about (and we seem to be reading about it a lot lately!)
Swim-trolling...FREAKING AWESOME.  I am just glad you were in a lake and not the ocean.
Getting lost on an out and back...priceless.

Happy Memorial Day.
June...how did that happen.

Oh good grief.

So I was all hot to do my bike TT during a race this weekend, but realized the race is 15 miles and the TT is only 12, right? I'm wondering if I should try to hit lap during my race, or set auto-lap by mile on the bike and take the fastest consecutive 12 miles?

Only way to teach a kid to ride a bike - no pedals - even better if you have a grassy slope - glide down and let them run it out...  After they can keep their balance and turn, etc, go back to pedals and zoom  - off they go... try to keep up!  We tried the other way and it was a dismal failure.  Training wheels just encouraged bad balance.  My daughter would shift her weight from one side and then to the other  - I finally looked her one day and said to my wife "This isn't working - all I see is Ride-Forest-Ride when she riding down the sidewalk"  LOL!

In my mind, there are two options, take the average MPH of the total ride and figure out the time or hit the lap button.

Uh, when is the deadline to finish?  I have a sprint on 6/13 which is a 400m/12m/5K that I would like to use as a re-test.  7 minutes?  COME ON GIRLS!

yeah just take the best 12 mile segment of the ride and use that, nothing wrong with that, I figured that was what most were doing.

Also, all you slackers get your times in, Goes until June 13th.

And on the pedals, we talked to some parents last summer that had one of those skuut bikes which is a wooden bike without cranks/pedals and they said their kids learned in a weekend.

This weekend was the first time we had time to try it out, and Andy same with my son, he was horrible on the training wheels.

Hehe big weekend for him, first time jumping off the diving board solo.  Though I wouldn't let him go off the high dive, lol, maybe I'm not ready for him to do that.

sorry i missed this.  you'll have enough data if you just simply start and stop your watch.  though auto-lap might save you some time determining your split.

I feel like I've been slacking off since Lonestar.  But after my meeting w/ my coach last week, he bumped up my training from 8-9 hrs. per week to 12-13 hrs. so I guess I'll have my butt back in gear pretty soon!

Good luck, Sam!  I have found that the jump from 8-9 to 12-13 hours was really challenging both on the body and my mind.  However, it has gotten easier.  I do love my step back weeks, though!

Nothing better than grilled food.  We grilled some veggies last night. Grilled veggies are GREAT!   Yellow Squash, zucchini, eggplant, red onion, and whole mushrooms are all great on the grill.  Skewer the mushrooms without any seasoning or oil.  For the reset, cut the eggplant in 1/8" oval slices, cut the squash in long planks that are 1/8" thick (if they are long squash, then cut the plank in half to shorten), peel the onions without cutting off the root "knot" and then cut in quarters.  Use a bit of canola oil to make sure that they veggies have a slight oil coating and then season with kosher salt (add pepper, granulated garlic or whatever else works for you like Cavendars or Creole seasoning).  Grill, turning 3 times to make pretty little grill marks - don't burn.  If you have good marks and the the veggie is not quite done or you want to keep them hot, then put them on the bun rack...  Freakin' yummy on sandwiches (with or without meat), as a side, in salads, etc...

Oh yeah, steaks and chicken are good grilled too
