Tobey91 - 2010-06-01 9:58 PM OK, so I am back.  I really appreciate the support and kind words this group has shown me in this tough time.

Short version is that it was a hard week, but very high quality family time.  And I learned just how amazing my wife is.  I mean I knew I married above my station, I just did not know how far above.

One thing I will share that is not tri related and is not related to the real reason we were there:   I went noodling for the first time  Noodling is the process of catching a catfish without a hook and line.  You get in the water and swim over to where the catfish's lair is.  The lair is usually at least 3 or 4 feet down underneath a rock or in a cave, so you have to dive down under the water to get there.  Then you stick your hand into the lair, and the catfish chomps down on it.  At that point, you grab the fish (in all fairness, the fish sort of already has you), and you pull it out of its lair and out of the water.  Basically fishing with no hook, no line and only your hand for bait.  I did it for the first time and caught a 35 lb fish.

Ok - non-tri related post over.

that's awesome but you're f'ing crazy.  noodling is nuts. whose the blond?  more pics!!!!

sorry about all thats been going on man.  welcome back.

Ok, so we have some hard core women and crazy dudes in this group, one trolling while OWS, another actually wanting a catfish to chomp on their hand.

William are you in Fredrick, MD perhaps????

Climbing hills?  Get a compact crank.

For triathlon the motto is smooth and steady, don't blow it on the climb.  For bike racing blow it on the climb and recover on the downhill.

Kyla. Absolutely amazing. I think I would have given up on the ride after the blow out. I guess that's why you're doing the IM and I am not this year.

Linda You're daughter is so cute.  I can see where her mother got her good looks from

No racing for me this weekend.  Last big week and weekend of training before a taper week for the first Oly of the year. Suzy....you still in for the sprint?

Hill climbing.  Lets see:  First tip is get a 12-27 cassette (see earlier sales pitch on this thread) and second is learn to stay seated for as long as you absolutely can.  This is a learned skill and takes work to learn to shift in the saddle to use different muscle groups, etc.  Usually, Once you stand, you will blow up unless you have really worked on not destroying yourself in that position.

Good luck to all you racers!  Laughing

Hill Climbing: Get better cassette. Start singing, "I Think I can I think I can" like the Little Engine that Could.   Or hell..slap on a motor on your bike and start it up every time you go on a hill to give you a a push. :-)

I am in the same Sprint as Linda on saturday.

FWIW I had a triathlon dream last night. I was ijn a sprint tri, and I came into transition and the volunteers handed me a box lunch and a DVD?!!! I then went into a one story building and could find my bike, but still had the stupid lunch and DVD!! What is that about?

Anyway today is my son Jake's 10th birthday. So I anticipate playing wii with him tonight (SM Galaxy 2 is his gift). Still have to squeeze in an hour of running, probably after I put him to bed.

No racing for me.  I have a campout with my middle son Tommy.  Will be a weekend full of water guns, water balloons, staying up late and eating junk food!

My wife however is doing her first race on Sunday.  The Keuka Lake sprint.  She is nervous/excited about it.  Unfortunatly, I won't be there to help her get set up and give her some moral support but she is going with one of her friends.  As a side note, she is also running a 3.5 mile race on Thursday night for the JP Morgan Corp Challenge.  Our company is hoping to place a women's team this year.  Last year, our men's team won in this region and went to South Africa earlier this year for the championships.

ETA - biking hills...I got nutin'.  I am still trying to figure it out myself!

Gobbling up the hill-climbing tips... I am slow as $#!* but I think I have mastered the art of not blowing up on the hills. That said, one of these days I want to be faster. I did get a new cassette, always stay seated unless I am about to fall over in which case I'll stand to save myself, LOL! Only 1-2 hills around here require that and only for a few pedal strokes. I sing, I talk, I talk myself through it, just chugga chugga chugga keep it movin' don't stop almost there steady check the heartrate keep it going... You get the idea.

Sprint tri on Saturday!! Issaquah Triathlon. Very local. Swim my my local lake (although on the other side), out-and-back bike on a route I do often (2 hills), grassy run. Actually will need to be very careful on the run. We are getting a ton of rain this week and the grass route could be icky. No twisted ankles!! I only raced one tri last summer (HIM) due to life getting in the way, so I'm anxious to shake the cobwebs out of my transitions and see what I can do.

Good luck to everyone racing!!! Fun stuff!!

ME ME ME!!!!   Doing Kerr Lake Olympic on Sunday.  The swim/bike should be good, the run will kick my butt as usual. That would change if I ever trained to run.  But it's first race post B2B and injury so I'm just glad to be back out there and will use it as a kick start for Augusta training.

p.s. to old MG members, heard on the news this morning they are releasing sterile grass carp into the lake I'll be swimming in to help reduce the hydrilla growth.  Can we say another return of the seaweed monster?!?!?!!

Happy 10th to Jake!!

And LOL about the tri dream. That should be a new topic -- what anxiety dreams have you had about racing? I had my first IM one about 2 weeks ago... Dreamed it was race day and I still hadn't packed my special needs bags (which you are to drop off the day before, mind you). Doh!

Saturday will be a year since my first Tri in New Brighton.  It is a sprint 1/2 mile swim, 14 bike, and 5k, last year I went 1:35, this year, shooting for faster... much faster.  1:15 is my goal, 1:10 is my everything goes perfect the whole race and I may come close time.

Did the swim course last year, water temps were about perfect, although some rain this week may cool it down a bit.  My main focus for this race is pushing myself hard enough on the bike.  I am hoping for dry roads although there is some possible rain in the forecast.

My 2 cents on hills.  Anticipate them, push into them hard, then a few moments before you slow/ start feeling the hill, shift down 2 gears and keep going.  Trying to stay on the higher rpm side always makes me feel like I climb quicker than hitting that stalling point where you have to grind gears.  Don't be afraid to drop to the small chain ring, but if you think you will have to, I would suggest doing it prior to the climb and work through the entire cassette.
