Not to change the subject or anything................................ good news all the way around this weekend.

Dan - so glad you and your family are safe.  All our thoughts are still with you in this horrific time.

Julia - congrats on a podium spot!!!

Kyla - my chiropractor/nutritionist has been recommending arnica for years. Do you like it?

Lina - I preface my comments with the fact that I've not used race wheels, and I certainly respect RP's opinion, but my gut reaction is the salesman is trying to sell you a very expensive pair of race wheels before your true need for something that deep.  There are lots of brands out there beside ZIPPS as well.

Tuffli - so scary to hear about your health.  Did you faint in front of your boss? Maybe there is a silver lining and you can work this to get a raise since you are obviously working yourself overboard.

Kim - glad your foot is feeling better and you were able to hammer out a great run.

I did 2 hard tests this weekend and I'm pooped.  On Friday I did a 2 mile TT run and on Saturday I did my first ever power test.  This was the first time I've ever ridden on power and I have no idea what I'm doing.  I don't have a point of reference for what my wattage numbers were either.  I feel like I broke the cardinal rule, nothing new on race day.  I'm looking forward to spending more time riding with power and learning how to control my wattage with the different gearing.

Thanks all. feeling much better.

Ryan - good idea! I need to find some Nuun or Berocca here.

Kyla - The doctor said the first thing I can do is have food before I have any alcohol.  That will slow down the dilation process.  Also, moving or shaking my legs prior to standing up will help get the blood moving up.

Tracy - yeah, it was pretty much in front of my bosses. LOL. we were all on our blackberrys until they heard the "thud"!  I'm actually due for a promotion, so I'll have to mention the hardship post out here .

Oh yes, absolutely agree with Tracy here on both points... don't just buy Zipps until you shop around and look at other options.  Hed, Mavic, SRAM, Easton, Edge/Enve, and Gray among others are all very viable options.  Another good deal is from Planet X for their 50mm carbon clinchers for $799/pair.  I think it's tough to say when that "true need" arises for a fast set of race wheels, but I'm of the school that if you can comfortably afford it, then it's a nice indulgence that will (in most cases) give you a bit more speed.  But I've been passed many times by guys on less expensive bikes with cheaper wheels.

x eleventy billion

Right now I think the zipps are going to be the fastest, marginally, but still probably faster than everyone else right now.

Let's see if I can insert the HRM data from my earthquake/trainer ride.  The quake officially occurred at 2:46:23 - about 30 minutes after my ride started.   Interesting to see the heart spike after my dismount and dive under the kitchen counter.  You will also notice that my heart rate wasn't very high during the ride.   Cycling is not my strength and I've been working on building up my base this winter.   I have been keeping it light because I end up with very sore knees if I push it hard and also try to get in 4-5 runs/week.   This ride is actually quite a bit better than when I started on the trainer at the beginning of Nov.    Riding with a heart rate of 110-112 bpm feels like (RPE basis) my running at about 130 bpm.  I believe 130 bpm while running is mid Zone 2 Friel.    Seems like a pretty big gap between the running and cycling numbers, but if I look at the positive side of things, I've got lots of room for improvement.

I ride at an average training speed of between 20-21 mph. Except when I am doing intervals, my HR does not go up higher than 120 very often. What I noticed is your comment about your knees. Have you had a good bike fit? Even with the running you are doing you should not be having that pain. If the fit is good I would see a PT to check out the pain.

It's so good to hear from you both, Dan and Tuffli! Stay safe and healthy!

btw, I'm no super sleuth. I just read in a news article that Google had set up that people finder for the Japan quake/tsunami, so I went and searched it for Dan. Someone had posted his FB message. Apparently Google did the same thing after the Haiti and Christchurch earthquakes. Very cool.

Take care, everyone.

Technology is amazing.  Dan glad you are well!

Julia--- Looking forward to you showing RP and I a good butt whooping on the wet trails of Seattle this week!

All right, feeling a little left out by this statement. Are you implying you're not looking forward to me getting my butt whooped too??!! (pout pout) I will be the most whooped!!! But yeah, looking forward to it as wel!

Well show up tonight and I will change my statement!! Beside I am willing to take a beating from you guys on Friday with your 2hr run.... Do you know how long it's been since I ran 2hrs.... The least you can do is join us on the trails for an hour tonight. Wink

Well, biking is easily what I do best of the three. I probably have maxed my HR on the bike in the 160's on a steep ascent. Having said that I am a lousy runner. I probably reached the 180's when I ran the MG virtual tri a couple of years ago. I damn near passed out at the end and would have really liked an oxygen tank!

I have a resting HR in the 40's though and remember your max HR goes down as you age (and not in a good way).

What is the profile of the route you were riding this AM? I lot of people do not draw power from their glutes on the bike thereby limiting their speed.

Doug - Ok I see my ride this am was on the trainer and I purposly try to use mostly my quads and rest my glutes and hamstrings, I cant remember my reason for this though but I think it was a goo done lol

And yea my resting heart rate is in the low 60's and my max was 198 while doing intervals on a hill during a speed session. I did not know about HR lowering with age. This whole heart rate  and training zones thing is confusing.

I have to share a story.  I went for a run around the esplanade at lunch.  As I pass the boathouse behind the hatchshell I see two, what appear to be, homeless men ahead walking towards MGH (away from me). One is walking backards and facing me and the other guy who is walking about a dozen step behind (in front?) him.

I see the guy walking backwards waving his arms, motioning to hurry up which I assumed to be directed towards his companion.

Then he says;
"come on. hurry up." (thinking he's talking to the other guy)
"you can do it, girl." (um, ok he's talking to me for some reason)
" you're gunna lose those hips..." ( ah, yes. He is talking to me.)

I think I need him to come home with me and for continued motivational support in the evening hours in which I tend to cave into my cravings.
