Hey there everyone... Just wanted to say hi.... Didn't "check-in" per se... 12 pages behind, and am on vaca.  Logged my workouts and started to read post, but was TOO FAR behind. I hope all is well with everyone, and I really hope that everyone has a great, safe, fun, high cardio, long weekend.

I am having a blast and have gotten in some nice workouts in with the Mrs!!  I don't know that I will check in until Monday again, so take care to all!

Kim looking at your training logs I know you will rock in your Tri in 2 weeks. You have great focus!

Really? Gosh you're way older than you look!  My famous back handed compliment.  Seriously, I don't worry about age too much.  I am in better shape now than I was in highschool or college and 20-30 somethings still think I am cool for participating in triathlons.

Ok so I have my first actual training post question.  How long do each of you train/compete in a year?  And how do you deal w/mental fatigue/motivation?  I started in Jan. this year and will go through mid-November.  Right now, I'm hitting a bit of a mental wall.  This morning I was supposed to get up for Master's practice.  I laid in my comfy bed and talked myself out of it.

I have four big goals ("A" races) this year.  Mar. sub 2 hr. 1/2 marathon, June complete my first HIM, July place AG in a small local tri that I've done for the past 2 years and fall run a fast marathon to see how far away I am from the magic 3:45 BQ time.

Although I have my July race which is important to me - the distances are super short and I think I'll be in good shape so this is sort of my mid year break month.  But I still feel guilty for blowing off workouts.  Do you guys run into the same problem and how do you recharge mid-season?

So, did you write this entire thing from that comfy bed while you were being really lazy and missing your Master's swim that maybe the others in the group were counting on you to show up?  Or just that second sentence, you know that one about your goals.

OK, you're new here so I'll stop there... but you if you don't do anything today then you gotta log "I WAS LAZY TODAY".

Seriously though, great question.

This is my first season so I'm kinda winging it.  Season #2 is going to be a lot more structured, probably with a coach.

Training for my first, 1/4 @ lone star, started in December.  But I had to get to where I could actually complete the workouts in the first weeks of the program.  So more like late October.  Once I knocked the 1/4 out I shifted immediately to the 1/2 program.  Actually 7 weeks into the program.  So, with the exception of getting sick for a few days, its been pretty much non-stop since Oct/Nov until now.

These past few days have been very nice.  Waking up knowing I have nothing to do that day, kinda like you this morning, ooops I said I would stop, my bad.  But I'm ready to get back at it.  Not ready for the intensity of a 1/2 program but definitely ready to ramp back up for the OLY in August, which will be my last tri this season.  Yesterday was my first training day since the 1/2 and it was more of a mental workout than physical because I had to keep the throttle way back.  My legs really wanted to go but that wasn't on the agenda.

If I feel like really not doing anything then I'll wait a little while, 15 minutes-1/2 hour and see if anything changes.  Walking out the door and being outside really helps out.  I also have no problem juggling my schedule.  I know what I have every day of the week. So say I was super duper lazy and didn't get out of my comfy bed to go to Masters swim but I had a 1.5 hour run tomorrow, I'll go run when I get up or sometime before beer thiry and get the swim in tomorrow understanding that it may not be with the Masters group.  For the run,  I may even wait until its really hot out, not hard to do down here, and go suffer in the heat.  A little self inflicted punishment for being really lazy and not getting out of my comfy bed to go to Masters swim.

If I really can't get going, happened two or three times this year, then I'll sit it out.  The deal though is I'll tell myself that its cool and don't dwell on it.  I'll pick up the program the next day and try my best not to look back.  We're human so that's hard, right?

4 "A" races is really cool but I don't think I could ever do that.  This year it was Buffalo Springs.  I have next year pretty much mapped out and again just one "A" race.

Sam, I HATE the am so my two a days (which are very few right now) are usually more like  noon and late pm.  For my am work I usually try to schedule it with someone else and they become the reason I must get up - I can't let them down.

Suzy, I shouldn't do this, but I was 7 when you graduated.Laughing

I have to throw in a little positive side benefit of training.  I haven't weight trained of any sort since something like last August.  But yesterday, I was on the losing relay team at my son's practice (we had an odd number so I jumped in).  Losers had to do 20 pushups and I did them since I lost.  Cranked thru 20, stopped at 30, and feel like I could've done 50.  No weight training - just endurance training.  The benefits of staying active and losing weight!

Not sure if I'll be back today.  Heading to the pool now, screwing off the rest of the day, then to the baseball diamond for the weekend.  Everyone have a great weekend!

There are three possibilities...

1.  You are physcially burned - take the day off, pushing through it can result in overtraining and injury

2.  You are mentally burned - Delay the workout and see how you feel later, sometimes you just have to suck it up and go though.  Like John, I will generally figure up some sort of self inflicted punishment like heat training or extra hill repeats to assuage my guilt

3.  Lastly, every now and again you just need a day off to lounge around, to sleep in - especially on holidays.  Don't feel guilty, there are other parts to life besides training.

haha I would have to have an accomplishment first.

Also, anyone interested in buying a HED Jet C2 Clincher Rear wheel, inluding ultegra cassette and tire?

I would like both but someone won't let me and I mostly need the front, so maybe split if someone is interested in the rear?  I can pick up locally and send it out.

Hi Sam
Great question. Are you feeling burned out from one particular part of triathlon or the whole thing?  Are you following a plan or winging it?  I hit a phase in my running where I was just sick of training.  I never missed a workout, but I wasn't having fun.  Part of it was training through a major injury and part of it was there was nothing new about the training that was exciting me.  It was after Boston, that I decided I had enough of the same old, same old and turned to a new coach and triathlon.  I find it really energizing to do different types of workouts that I have never experienced in all three sports.  Some are easy, some are a total pain in the butt, but they are new and different.  Is it possible you are in a rut from the way you are training?  Knowing you want to BQ, maybe you set your sites on running approaching running differently from the past.  It would definitely mean starting sooner rather than later to do it, but it might be something to look forward to each morning.

BigReub - 2009-07-03 10:10 AM Sam, I HATE the am so my two a days (which are very few right now) are usually more like  noon and late pm.

Reuben--very un-nice, especially on a holiday weekend.  I guess as long as I can kick your a@* when we toe the line at a 10K I am fine being something close to your mother's age .

sdalessio - 2009-07-03 9:18 AM Ok so I have my first actual training post question.

Well Samantha we have various ways of helping out with motivation here. One you are accountable to us!!!! for your training.  2) Steve will always tell you something very postitive like HTFU and just go out and do it 3) the team will watch you as well. There is no getting away from them. It's kind of like orgainzed crime. Once your in the "family" there is no getting out

In reality this group just makes you want to keep training. I just went through a bit of a tough time training having started a new job with lots of travel. I had been so tired by the time I got home I just wanted to sit down and have a nap. I still felt really  guilty about it though and set myself some short term goals.  My HIM isn't until Sept so I have designed a new workout schedule where I am not training (swim, run .bike) everyday. On my off day s I am doing ab and core and strength training. The change is great.  I also signed up for another long spring in July and will do something  in August too. I know feel great and am recharged to continue my training.  Lastly for my two cents worth  it doesn't hurt to take a short break now and then if you are tired. It happens to the best of us. Right Steve!!!
