SSMinnow - 2010-06-02 5:43 AM Is it really Wednesday???? Then it must be "TELL US ABOUT YOUR RACE" day....so who's doing what?

For the rest of us, lay out your best tip on hill climbing?  There has been so much about biking lately, from Tony's kids to Kyla's super stud ride.....so talk to us!

no racing for me.

Hill climbing - not much to add to the points made by others.  The only thing I can think of is that I used to hunch over.  I recently have focused on dropping my shoulders down and back, and opening up my chest.  That has allowed me to take deeper breaths and has made me (feel to be) faster on the hills than I otherwise would be.

SSMinnow - 2010-06-02 3:03 PM Ok, I am pulling an Andy today.....next post.

Today was my first day riding the IM course this season.  The course is basically a lollipop, a stick and a double loop gets you 112m.  Today was the double loop which is the kick A$$ part of the course, lots of hills, turns et al.  I started the morning with my OWS class, followed by the bike...had to pull a Kyla and take care of business before getting on my bike. With no bathrooms open yet, what's a girl to do? Didn't pull a Twin .  Biked the first loop and decided to do the reverse for the second...it is harder and I thought what the heck.....overall the whole th ing went really well.  Little light on nutrition, but the legs felt reasonable.  No brick run so I was a happy camper!  Today was the first day, I was actually able to see the strength I have gained over the course of one year. Hills that were really hard last year, were the same hills I was able to spin up this year....pretty psyched with the progress.  Plenty of work to do yet, but three months to do it!

The only thing I am still having issues with is sustaining an average Z3 Watts...my HR data says I spent 3 hours in Z3, but my power data has me spending 2 hours in Z3 and way too much time in Z1 which totally crushed my average....argh!

Lol, I knew I would be famous one day for something but this???
(and John, I will come back with something good one of these days)

Curious about the watts, is it due to the downhills?  Does it take longer for heartrate to catch up vs.  watts which are real time?

How hilly was the course?

Even at Lonestar being pancake flat I found it hard to stay in Z3 the whole time, I averaged high Z2 and wanted to be Z3.

Honestly I think it just takes practice riding outdoors in wind, hills, sun, etc, the trainer gets you close but practicing the real thing outside gets you the rest of the way.

Pink is faster!  Used my lap function on the Garmin, picked a spot with a bit of a tailwind and not too much climbing, and let it fly! Slid through and/or around a couple of stop signs.  Fastest 12 miles ever, with the Garmin to prove it!  33:20.  So........I'm done.  Them times ain't gonna get any better.  Beat THEM, boys!

Then, of course, I had to go another 20 to get home.  They were slower miles.

Awesome, Linda!  Maybe I need to find a pink top for my race Sunday

Going to use first 12 miles of my Oly bike as my VT bike.  Last year it was 37 min, would love to get that down...

Thanks Suzy!! You just gave me a new favorite phrase. "pulling a twin."

Sarah was playing around outside and did not want to come in to use the bathroom.

She totally pulled a twin.

Hola Gang. Sorry for the short absence but it is about to get a tad bit long. Dh and I leave for Italy/Greece tomorrow. I wont have access to internet but hopefully if I can snag a computer at some point in the next week and a half I will say hey.

I did my first 50 miler on Monday and totally rocked it. I couldnt be prouder of myself but I still need to hit the hills more often. I was told if I could conquer the course I did on Monday then I would be fine for Augusta. WAAAA HOOO

Okay, so Steve and Ryan, I'm dying to know.  Did you guys do the Underpants Race at Ironman Canada?  And does that mean Trevor and I have to do it too?  Maybe this should be the next MG destination race?

Tony/Twin: The loop is super hilly and totally screws with my averages on the downhill.  I had 30 mins of zero watts because my cadence would jump well over 112 on them and I would spin out.  I think it is more than that though...there were times when I would look down at my PT when I was cranking hard and it would read 95-115. What is your smoothing set to?  I know I need practice, but the effort seems to surpass the output.  I wish I would have had the PT for LS, I was all out for those 12m.  Probably still would have been in Z2

Andy: Don't be afraid of coming to Wisconsin for a race.  While most of our races have a lot of hills there are a few people that walk their bikes up them .

Steph: Have fun on that trip and be prepared to post a photo or two.  I've not been to the area, but it is on my list.

The man and I are off to Minocqua for the weekend....weather is supposed to stink, but I am hoping I can still get in the OW once or twice.

Make it a great day!

Good Morning, all!   Any exciting plans for the day?  I'm heading out for a 9 mile run, getting my nails done, going to the grocery store, finishing the laundry I started earlier this morning, and picking up the youngest from his last day of school.  Date be dam*ed, it's the first day of summer!

"But… that something beautiful. I don’t want to forget it. As soon as Joyce made the call, the camera cut to Galarraga. And he smiled. That’s all. No argument. No theater. No wild waving of arms."

and my favorite part....

"And when my young daughters ask, “Why didn’t he get mad and scream about how he was robbed?” I think I will tell them this: I don’t know for sure, but I think it’s because Armando Galarraga understands something that is very hard to understand, something we all struggle with, something I hope you will learn as you grow older: In the end, nobody’s perfect. We just do the best we can."

Ya that was crazy. Out by a good 3/4 of a step. But the interview with Galarraga was great after.

Start Rant!

Training plan has me starting my Taper today for my next race........first taper of this year, so it made me curious enough to ask:

Who else hates Taper days?   Yell

I always feel like I am not doing anything productive except short and slow workouts!  I know taper is very important, maybe more than training sometimes and always follow my taper to the letter, etc. but just wondering who else is so addicted to training that you hate these days?

Rant over!

Tapering is always odd. I feel like I am slacking. Also my body realizes I am not taxing it as much so it starts "healing" things which brings out all sorts of aches and pains. At the same time I also think will the workouts I am doing during my taper wear me down so that I will be LESS than optimum for the race? It is all mind games. Just need to follow the taper.
