Another reason to bust out a HIM.   Love the Double QP.  Haven't had one in over a year!

So, here's the deal:  I can wrap my head around the swim - I mean if you can swim a mile in an Olympic distance, you can swim 1.2 right?  The bike - I have ridden two 100k's recently and have the century coming up - again, maybe not fast, but no problem.  It's the run - 13.1 miles seems like a lot still, expecially after the first two events.  Perhaps I need to slide into a Half Mary plan after the Olympic plan and before the HIM plan.  What do you think?

Happy Fourth of July Everyone!

USA Smiley

If you have the time to do a 1/2 marathon before the HIM, I think it would be helpful OR you can just do a HIM plan with a greater concentration on running.  I know I can run 13.1m withouth a problem, but as you point out doing it after the bike is another issue.  A stand alone half marathon will NOT get you that experience because you won't be tired and you won't pace yourself the same.  What it will give you is the confidence to know you can go that far.  Plus a little variety is FUN!

Another beautiful, albeit cool day in Northern WI.  Doing a long run and hopefully an OWS. The boat traffic made for a lot of chop yesterday so I will have to see given the Holiday.  With nearly 4,000 acres to swim in, I should find some place calm enough to pound out 30 minutes!  Then its grilling out with friends and watching the fireworks from the Lake.

Enjoy the day!

Woo hoo! just got back from my race.  I believe I ran the 4 miles in 31:08, maybe a bit faster, hit lap and not stop when I crossed since I was just using my regular watch not my garmin.

7:49/mile pace, I can't believe it.  A full minute per mile faster than last year.

Will put up the race report in a bit.

Happy 4th everyone!

I had a question / poll for everyone.  Today, my workout called for an hour bike followed by a 30 min. run.  I did both and felt absolutely no fatigue whatsoever.  I actually felt strong and kind of "fast" (for me) on my run.  Here is my question:  I know it depends on the distance of each event, but does anyone else seem to run faster off the bike than when running alone?  My stand alone run times are much slower than my bike to run times (by like a minute per mile slower).  Not only is this the case in training but I've also noticed it in my races too.  During my Olympic run, I ran a 51:34 10K.  I can't run that by itself.  I'm averaging between 9-10/mile. - Obviously that's after a 24 mile bike too.  Just curious.

Had a great ride this AM. rode most of the course of my next tri. I rode with twwo other racers. I rode this course on Monday, the day after my last tri, for the first time and averaged 19.8. Still did not go all out and averaged 21.3. It is a great course. I can't wait to race it. Then we ran the run route. Got a little confused, but felt great during both the ride and the run and after too. Could have run more! Wished the race had been today. Definitely going to consume caffeine before the race!

And Jeepguy, I am almost never faster off the bike than when I run without riding before.

Happy 4th!

Andy:  I'm going w/ Suzy on that.  You'll be fine.

Tony:  Great job man.  You blew me away.

Chris:  Yeah I'm that way during bricks.  I have a very hard time figuring my pace off the bike but am pretty good at it when just running.

I ran a 5k this morning.  Legs were heavy and is was low 90's by the time we started at 7:30.  Not a good combination.  I could hold 8 minute miles through the first two but then fell off.  Still had a blast.  They ran out of beer, but it was Michelob Ultra so is that really a bad thing?  I think not.

When I am training, I feel great runnin off the bike. I could not sustain the same paces as a stand alone run, but not too far off.  This is totally different for me in a race.   I push the bike and more often than not arrive in T2 in less than optimal shape. In sprints, I can gut it out for a decent 5K time.   My Olympic and beyond need a lot more work to approach my stand alone times.

Tony--A BIG Congratulations!  Is it possible a BQ could be in yours and Sams future? I hope so!

Off to the boat.  Have a great day.

Thanks Suzy, I was pretty amazed at the result.

John that is an awesome picture.

Happy 4th everyone.  If you watch the simpsons one of my favorite lines is when homer goes into a store at the beach to buy illegal fireworks and the cashier says to him to celebrate the birth of your country by blowing up a small piece of it.

Hi Sam! Welcome to the group!

Doug- LOVE the new avatar!

Chris- I'm always much slower on the run after the bike. I have a lot of work to do on my cycling though. I think if your strong on the bike you come into the run stronger too.

John- Sounds like you had FUN! That's always the most important part. Great job in that heat!!!

Nice job John!  And no - it is not a bad thing to run out of Ultra - eeww...  I thought up a new t-shirt / bumpersticker today  - "Powered by Hops..."  I know you will be the first in line to buy one!

Did not drown on my 750m OWS today.  I think I manage a first for our team - first to be DFL! If I wasn't it was by a split second or so.  It was a stretch goal for me and I completed it and learned some more about OWS'ing.  My favorite line from the day was "I'm a completer, not a competer...."  I will post a RR when we get some times.  All I know is that I was slow, slow, slow...  (that happens when I switch back and forth from freestyle to breast stroke )

Great job out there brother.  Damn proud of you for having the courage to stand up to a "stretch goal" and seeing it through.

Don't worry John, the century is a stretch goal too.  I am not going to set any speed records out there...  15-16 mph will probably be my pace - depending upon the wind.

Nice job, Tony!  that is an incredible improvement

Andy, you had the courage to sign up for something that was out of your comfort zone, good for you and you did finish!  I'm sure it's not like tris where there are lots of slower swimmers....if it is just an OWS race, it's probably mostly "real" swimmers, so good on you!

John, you went out there and did the race just a week after your HIM and in 90 degree + heat...most people were probably just reaching for their morning paper or cup of coffee.

So, good for all of us that were able to train or race today.  Now let's go enjoy some good grub.  I'm happy because my baseball team gave some Texas team a Whooping! (two days in a row!)

Yeah, looks like Lincecum threw a good game. I wonder what he would do against a good team or in the AL.  6.5 out, you'll be good ;-)

Great job!  It's all about the experience and pushing yourself.  just remember it's OK to stroke both ways.  It shows your diversity and that you're open minded.  It's fine to experiment once in awhile
