MillMan221 - 2010-02-13 11:48 AM I'm pleased to say my swim training has been going very well, I'm averaging 2x a week, 2300 yds each session, and am feeling great.

Had a nice breakthru in my stroke/kick/timing this week, and was able to do several 100s at 1:30 - 1:40 per, instead of my typical 1:50 - 2:00 / 100.  Best part was the feeling that it was "less" work or easier ... just slipping thru the water.  For me this is huge, and I can't wait to feel it in a wetsuit!

There's something to be said about a two-beat kick  - take a look:

John,

Thanks for posting the link regarding the two-beat kick. I have heard it mentioned before, but never really understood it. The video at the link shows it very clearly to me. Maybe I will can get lower my T-pace down from 1:55 to 2:00 per 100M as well.

Thanks!

Congratulations on the swim improvement!! That is awesome and the best part is feeling like you are working less, yet going faster. Fabulous!!

I have always been a 2-beat kicker (distance swimmer). I can either do 2-beat or 6-beat, but the 6-beat I can only sustain for about 25-50 yards and I have to concentrate like crazy. Good to see that write-up that tells why a 4-beat kick feels impossible for me. I kick a bit more going into and out of turns but that's about it. I'm just barely a thump-thump'er, probably just enough to keep my legs up and do my rotation.

No word on the CT. Chris, did you hear anything? When I told my  husband about it, he was all over it, ready to call the woman and drive to her house (he's a bit of a Craigslist freak). No phone number listed, so just waiting an email reply. I may have to put my husband on the CT prowl for me -- he loves a bargain and likes his wife to have good toys (if he doesn't have to break the bank for 'em!).

X2 on the swim breakthrough John.  2 beat works for me (at least for what kick I have).  You will love a wetsuit!!!

Sorry Kyla, the CT is already en route to SC.    J/K...  No word.  Obviously if someone can pick it up, why bother shipping it?  Enjoy it if you get it.

Happy Saturday, everyone.  Today I was reminded to thank Tracy, yes, you ms. ahrens.  I was fishing around in the clean laundry basket for just one pair of my most favorite running socks (balega...at Tracy's recommendation a year ago!)...only found a single...gosh, I hate when that happens...ended up wearing an older pair of Wright socks...oddly they are called the anti blister sock.  And ended up getting a stupid chafing blister on my 7 mile run this morning!  It's not too bad, but it made me think of all of the awesome things we share on our MG...that really have been such a great help.  So, thanks, Tracy...I'm pretty sure that was you.  I know it wasn't Tony, he said, "are socks such a big deal???"

Now, if I could get that 2 beat kick thing, I'd be golden.

OK, I had one too many glasses of wine last night...only cause I ran out of beer, so I canned the bike today to volunteer at our masters meet.  I timed a dude on the 50 freestyle at 18 seconds.  That is frigging moving!  And I noticed that he was doing the 16 beat kick.

Personally I am a 2 beat kicker myself.

Hehe I use Balega these days also, if it's going to be a long run.  For shorter runs I am not that picky.

Meters vs. yards is very different... I think about 2 seconds for a 50, usually (not to mention no turn for meters).

OK, OK, it was a bone-headio thing to say... I'll admit!

So back to the Olympic opening ceremonies... Total rant here. We watched with the kiddos (who LOVED it -- me too!), and we're on the edge of our seat for the torch lighting, and Tivo didn't get the whole thing!! Granted there were technical delays as the 4th tower didn't rise, but man, what a let down, especially after I had been explaining to the kids the monumental significance of the Olympic torch. Ya can't win. Fortunately I found it online but the drama was lost on us.

Oh well. The kids are super-psyched to watch the competition, though, which I'm so thrilled about! Last winter Olympics they were still a little young to care.

So today I rest and find some good sports on TV, and find a doc-in-the-box for my poor sick husband (we think he has strep). Lots of groovy germs in our house this past week, eh?!

Happy V-Day to all.

I am assuming it was yards, and he did have to make the turn.  This guy was 20 something and competed in the last olympics.  The 18 seconds did break a record...don't know if it was a masters record or world record or what???

OK -- good to know he was a young pup and a bona fide stud sprinter. Cool that you got to see it! And speaking of 16-beat kick, I've always been amazed at how much water those sprinter's legs churn. You can see that their kick really does help propel them along. Very cool! Did you catch his name?

So a new one for me this AM.  I go out for my weekend long base run, looking at 9.5 miles this morning, and I end up having to turn around at my usual 10K mark because the dog "Libby" just cannot keep up with me.  She struggled the entire morning once we hit the 3 mile mark.  Since I have been home she seems fine and is acting normal.  I did go right back out and finish my run after dropping her off.  Wife says she acted like she usually does when I kick her butt doing speed work after I dropped her off.

So is real question is....is she getting old (she is only 7), or I am getting faster,  or did she just have a bad day like we all do?  (Maybe she drank to much last night?)

Anybody else ever have this happen to them with their running partner?

P.S.  Suzy....stay in HI.  The weather has not improved in the cheese state at all!

Reno....good luck with the surgery this week!  Been there done that and all I can say is be "Patience with your recovery!"    That was the hardest part for me, make sure your PT knows you have that competetive spirit, they will keep you in line if you have a good one to ensure you don't reinjure yourself.

Oh, finally ...... Happy Valentines Day to Everybody....it is going be a great Season!

Thanks....that is going to be the hard part....I can't wait to get started.  I just want to make sure that the PT knows that a true "return to full function" for me is not being able to go back to a desk job but to be able to kick some serious a$$ in a 70.3 in 7 months.

I had rotator cuff tendonitis last year and saw a PT for a few months. I was straight-up with her and told her I needed to be swimming (I did my HIM in June, this was probably around Jan-Feb). Just being able to empty the dishwasher was not enough!! She stuck it out for me. I pushed ahead a little bit -- told her I was going to try swimming but promised her I'd stop if it really hurt or I felt like I was back-sliding. I had to build up slowly but was able to do it. Just be firm with your PT and let them know what "normal function" means for you!! You will do great. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

Hey MG. It is 5 weeks to my marathon. I ran 2:45 this morning covering 18.14 miles on the TM, the farthest I have ever run. The entire run was not fun, but I gutted it out and finished. Next Sunday is my longest run before the race. Probably be 20+ miles. I sat down when I got home and could still feel the pounding in my feet for some time.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.
