Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SSMinnow - 2012-09-12 6:01 AM It's Wednesday which means it's time to talk about racing. Who's in? Put me down for a solid maybe. I have a 15K Sunday morning, but I don't know if I will be running or not at this point. My foot is feeling better, but I am concerned about reaggravating it by putting much mileage on it right now. I have an appointment my PT this afternoon so I'll see what he thinks.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Christina - I agree with you, especially on the drafting. It is very obvious if you are drafting or not and that is the whole point of triathlon - individual effort!!! I felt so bad for a guy at IMCA in 2011. We were climbing Richter Pass (and if you don't know that hill NO ONE was going above 8mph) and the ref gave this guy a drafting penalty. Seriously, the course was 3 deep wide everywhere with people just trying to make it up the hill. I don't think it's possible to draft at those speeds on a climb. Silly ref in my opinion. And I agree on the littering too. I try to pack it all out with me and hate the gobs of sticky mess that accumulates. Therefore gel flasks are my best friend.
REAL TRAINING QUESTION!!!!!! Last night I was working sprint drills (shocking I know). I was focusing on quick cadence, high knee lift and foot kick. The part that surprised me was how off balance I felt. I don't know if I'm just not used to running with this form and it was highlighting core weakness, or was it because I wasn't wearing my stability shoes and so I was wobbly. Those of you with good running form - what are your thoughts? |

It's a nighttime 5k (one of those glow races) on Saturday. I haven't run a standalone 5k in about 2 years so I'm excited! Haven't done speedwork for this - just been focusing on the marathon that I have next month. Hoping I haven't forgotton how to run fast! I'm planning on biking to the race (about 40 minute easy ride) bc in the past year my sprint tri 5k times have been better than my previous 5k times, so I'm hoping that the bike warmup will do the trick for a PR! Question for the group: The race starts at 7:30p. When and what should I eat beforehand? I'm planning on leaving my house around 6:15 and getting there by 7. Is this OK? Or should I get there a little later/earlier? I don't want my warmup to be too far removed or too close from the start of the race. |

Those of you with good running form - what are your thoughts? Not sure I qualify as good running form but I try. In my opinion based on only the information you provided I believe your balance issues are a direct reflection of a lack of core strength. I know personally that after beginning a regimen to improve core strength my balance and therefore ability to handle drills improved significantly.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I feel like I've missed a lot. I liked the pics of the male volleyball players--just didn't see them until now. Thanks!! I don't think I should comment on the IM since I've never done one, but I believe in everyone following the rules. Can't imagine how frustrated I'd be if spectators/supporters were in my way. I wouldn't be nice. At my last race, I was yelling at drivers who I felt were going WAY too fast on the run course. Kyla, Love your little tree hugger. That warms my heart. I'm in for a 10k trail run this weekend. I volunteered to be the sweeper, so my speed will depend on the slowest runner. I'm ok with that for two reasons, 1) I'm slow anyway and like encouraging others. 2) I've tweaked my right knee and don't know how it's going to feel by Saturday. Good luck to the other racers--David, Scott, Melissa, and maybe John |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was in a collision today. In John's honor - it was with a beer truck. I was in the bike lane (for those that know the road, on Saratoga-Sunnyvale) and the truck turned right, into a parking lot, in front of me. I hit the truck with my left side/hand, and the road/curb with my right. He kept going!! I picked myself up, and followed him. His response? 'I didn't see you.' Mine: 'Did you feel me? or hear me?' HE LEFT!! That's a hit and run!!! I'm not hurt, but I hadn't taken my race wheels off yet - so I need to get it all checked out. I am TICKED. Witnesses offered to call 911 - no need. I was shaky, but with friends, and made it the 18 miles back to my car. By the time I called the truck company, the driver HAD reported it. Hope my wheels are okay....... |

I hope you are OK -- please post tomorrow after you've had a night to sleep and let us know if you have any aches and pains. And let's hope the wheels are fine too. So what happens with the driver? He owes you lots of beer. |

Scary stuff. I expect you will have more aches and pains tomorrow - hopefully nothing serious. I agree with Kyla -- he should at least drop off a few cases of beer. |

Wait for it.... Tomorrow!!! Ha! You cyclocrossers are crazy! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Linda, I would go see a doctor soon just to document the incident. Especially since it was a company car he was driving there could be an ugly battle if you end up with medical issues (or need new race wheels!) and the longer you wait to document the harder it will be. Glad you are okay. What a jerk!!! Yhea, marathon racing!!! Wooo Hooo!!! Exciting stuff. I just broke the news to my coach that I'm racing IMKY next year and I've already got a marathon and HIM on the books. Ugh. For my local peeps I'll be sweating all over the Tobacco Trail Marathon and the Ironman Raleigh 70.3. Linda, will I see you out there? I believe Doug is raing the half correct? |

I am signed up to race. Hoping my new path will get me there healthy and in the best shape ever. Sorry for being absent so much MG. I have been following the MG and tracking the races. You have been putting up wonderful results. A LOT has been going on here. First, I said no to moving to Germany. Not sure what the job future holds for me. Second, I dropped out of IMFL. Third, I have gotten over the doldrums due to my injured knee and other tragedies. I stopped working with my old coach when it seemed like I was not going to be able to race again any time soon and therefore I lost motivation. Fourth, I noticed that a couple of friends were having stellar (as in KQ) years after incurring serious injuries. SO I went to their coach and I am working on rebuilding myself from the ground up. I had a physical assessment yesterday for an hour. Flexibility, stability, and a little strength. For not moving fast or far I was sweating like I was on Mercury! We now have a base-line. I have a series of exercises to do every day to improve my weak areas, (hamstrings, lower leg stability, core, hips, etc.) Moving forward we are going to develop good form over time so that I do not become injured again and at the same time become a better faster triathlete. Wish me luck! |

That is crazy that he wasn't aware that he hit you! Such garbage! Glad you are OK. One time my dad got hit by a meat truck and he negotiated to have the meat company give him $500 of meat instead of paying the deductible. Funny thing tho, we have four vegetarians in our family! Maybe you can get some beer in exchange. I hope at least it was a craft brew truck instead of a Schlitz truck. |
