Hubby and I are doing the race together.  Actually, we'll start together.  He'll kick my butt, finish, have snack and a nap and then watch me finish!  That's how Wisconsin went, anyway.   We are training together about 80% of the time.  It's fun.

Velcromom - that is totally awesome. I think you will beat him this year though .

All three of us are shooting for sub-10 hours! Ok...not really. I don't think I'm going to shave off 2.5 hours from lastyear - but maybe .

So now that January is in the books, what are your totals for the month?

Swim = 1930 yds ; 6.2 hrs
Bike = 366 miles ; 19.75 hrs
Run = 66 miles ; 7 hrs

I was a bit shy on the run because I am just getting over a bout of achilles tendonitis. I finally went to a chiropractor for some ART and can not believe the results! Only four treatments I am up to running 10 miles. Taking it slow, but it feels so good to be able to run again.

Happy training in February everyone.

Still recovering from the marathon - no running this past week - but I did manage a couple of 60-mile days on the bike and some spin sessions.  Not sure why I'm avoiding the pool?  Will try to go tonight.  It's outdoors, so hopefully it won't be all that cold.

No family members racing with me in CDA, but I think the folks are going to mix it in with a trip through the Pacific Northwest.

Competitor's Endurance Sports Awards were Saturday night and there was an accompanying Tri Expo taking place this weekend at the Hilton San Diego Resort.  The events kicked off with a sitdown interview with Chris Lieto and Craig Alexander on Thursday night.  It was interesting to hear the two go through their race at Kona - as well as their 70.3 showdowns in Honu and Boise.

The Expo was pretty much what you would expect; Lots of booths, plenty of samples (I think I've had my fill of Clif bars and FRS for a while) and goodie bags to the first 100 people on Friday morning.  We did the Expo in the morning and then a nice 60-miler up the coast and back.  Other than busting a spoke (fortunately just 2 blocks from Nytro), it was a pretty good day.

The highlight of the weekend was the second of two rides on Saturday with Lieto and Alexander.

After a huge (and pretty slow) group ride of about 20 miles and a break for breakfast burritos with the Tri Club, a much smaller group took off up the coast.  I was prepared for a hammerfest.  There were only about 20-30 riders (as opposed to the 50 or 60 from the first ride) and as it turned out, the pace was pretty mellow.  There were a times when I just hung on Lieto or Crowie's wheel.  They rode side-by-side from time to time and chatted about past races and training experiences here in San Diego - just spinning it out at a pretty high cadence.

By the time we got to Del Mar (about 15 miles) the pack had been whittled down to about 5 or 6 riders.  My training buddy, Jonathan, turned to me when we were sitting 3rd and 4th wheel behind the two pros and remarked on how rare of an opportunity it was.

We ended up turning around at the 20-mile mark in Encinitas.  After a quick pit-stop, Lieto put the hammer down.  I was struggling to stay with the pack on the hills and I thought Crowie had even fallen off the back for a bit.  It looked like he might be done, but he soon came flying by me at breakneck speed, dropped down in aero, and caught up to the group (I think he had missed a light or stopped for something).  I was cooked and couldn't match their pace.  I got dropped on the next climb and missed a light at the top of the hill.

Jonathan had hung with them until the long hill at Torrey Pines and waited for me at the top.  We cruised on back to the Hilton, all giddy like schoolboys.  We didn't see the pros again until after we got out of a clinic back down at the Expo later in the day.  I heard they had decided to add some more distance and hills on the way back.  It's pretty amazing how effortless they made it look while riding 23-24 mph into a headwind.

There was also a hosted run in the morning, unfortunately taking place at the same time as the first ride.  Adam and Kara Goucher were in town and joined the group run along with Dean Karnazes and Josh Cox.  Meb Keflezighi was in the area and stopped by for a while, too.

Same here!  it's fun to know of other married folks who both do the same IM racces.  My husband and I both just did IM Cozumel this past Nov.  Kinda a weird race for us being that we both had bike mechanical issues.  Not sure how IM CDA will pan out- most likely I'll beat him out of the water and then he'll pass me on the bike and runSurprised  And hopefully if it's cold he'll have my nice warm toasty layers waiting for me at the finish line!!

Jan total for me:

Run -  114 miles - 15:03
Bike - 475 miles - 25:55
Swim - 20,025 yards - 6:30

It's amazing how an ironman will keep you dedicatied.

Halfironmike - That sounds like an awsome weekend.

Halfironmike - Wow, that sounds incredible. I would have had a tough time picking whether to go on the run or the bike...I think you made a good choice!

Lets see, my first swim was today, so my January swim total is...well...zero.

Swim: 0
Bike: 240
Run: 124

Not too bad. I'm about 5-10% above where I was last year at this time, which is perfecto (according to what I'm trying to do).

Looks like everyone's numbers are awesome. Anyone in here actually realistic in trying to qualify for Hawaii?

I just purchased some new orange, Pro Race 3 tires, so I'm pretty stoked about that .

January was my first month back training so my numbers are pretty low.  It took me a lot longer to recover from IM Cozumel than I thought it would!  I tried to race a half marathon in early January and ended up with a knee injury so I wasn't able to run much in January, which sucks because that's what I enjoy most.  But I'm pretty much recovered and plan to ease back into running this month.  Also need to work on the bike- I need more bike miles this month!

January's totals:
Bike:10h 11m 54s  - 158.13 Mi
Run:8h 19m 04s  - 52.57 Mi
Swim:5h 45m 49s  - 17050 Yd

Well January was marathon month so no impressive numbers at all, ballpark stuff here just cuz I am too lazy to look.

Bike 84
Run 94
Swim 12,000 yards

So as far as lodging goes.. I was planning on camping in a tent... no RV.  I was wondering if anyone has insider trader knowledge of campgrounds.  I saw the following on the web, any ideas or experiences of them:

River Walk RV Park
Tamarack RV Park
Bambi Rv Park
Cedar Motel and Rv Park

Those looked like the closest 4.  I will call them later, but was looking for a local's info, especially if there is anything else close to the start/finish or whatever.

Hopefully in Feburary I will have more bike miles than run miles 8).  I should be good and recovered by now.. getting ancy to get out and train for longer than an hour at a time... ya I said that out loud.... and will regret it soon enough no doubt.

Not sure how you calc spin mileage, but assuming it's about the same average speed as the trainer, here are the January estimates:

Swim: 1 mi. - guess I better get in the water.
Bike: ~400 mi. (incl. spin & trainer)
Run: 124 mi. (incl. Carlsbad Marathon)

Here's to hoping everyone has a successful month of training / racing in Feb!

Kudos to you for hitting that bike ride right after Carlsbad.  I went to the Tri Expo as well and did the 5k run and a 20 mile bike on Fiesta Island afterwards.    Just from that, I felt pretty toasted in the evening due to recovery from Carlsbad.

Thanks, jodavis.  How did your race go?  Hope you're feeling better now.  I was pretty toasted Saturday night, too, but at least you got in a 5k run.  I still haven't run since the race.  Took yesterday off completely.  Was planning to run, but had to write a paper and was feeling a bit under the weather.  Can't remember the last time I didn't do anything on a Sunday.  Spoke with another Carlsbad finisher at breakfast on Sat and he's been running, so I guess I gotta get on the stick.  Back to the track tomorrow!

This was marathon month for me, too.  I definitely went easy on the bike/swim coming in to Carlsbad.  It all panned out with a good race and qualifying for Boston.

Now off to the pool!

I am going to book accomodations at the Cedar Motel & RV Park, only because of the location. It is right on the bike/run course and my hubby and kids will be able to watch with a minimal amount of relocating. It's my job as Mom to make sure my race is a good expereince for them too:-).I just called and it's $42.12/night in the RV park with all services... I'm sure it's not a super classy place, but we're bringing our own accomodations and the location is right, what more do I need?? And the price is good... maybe I can afford some new wheels!!!

The race was awesome... my first marathon actually and was able to eek out a 3:39 which I was thrilled about.  I can tell it is still going to take a few more weeks to fully recover.   Did a short run this morning and HR was all crazy for what normally would be a warm up pace.

Okay, I need to get my numbers in the spreadsheet...  As it stands my estimates are:

Swim: ~ 22,000 Meters
Bike: ~ 380 Miles
Run: ~110 Miles

I have been keeping my base around the 11-12 hours per week.  The crazy part is I have never claimed to be much of a swimmer so I have been doing a little more work in the pool.  During the month of January I did 4 different 4,000 meter swims.  I think the lap swim is more mentally challenging then the treadmill or bike trainer...???  The good news is I have a little more confidence with the IM swim distance.  Now it is time to work more on the bilateral breathing and perhaps some self defense in the water Laughing.

Hey Mike--- Insane weekend and life experience with the Pros.  It would be awesome to hang with those guys, even just for a few miles!

I felt good about January, until I saw some of your numbers...great job.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm here in Michigan where it's been very, very cold.
