Great posts about distance, goals and specific training, and I agree it is not about distance it is about what is your goal for that distance or race or training. I must be ADHD because now I have no idea what to do No racing this weekend. I am still struggling making my goals concrete. But these are the races I am planning in my head for now. HM, OLY, HIM, and two sprints. My "A" race and what I will be training for is the HIM, trying to decide if I should do it at the end of June or the end of August. I kind of like August only so I can build up more of a base. But others are trying to convince me to do June and get it over with so I can enjoy the summer. Any thoughts on this?
Now you have just made my decision that much harder, your supposed to make it easier |

If it is your "A" race, getting it over with is not the attitude I would want to carry into my training. I like the idea of doing some shorter distance racing ahead of it to get some solid speed work done and get yourself prepared to race hard. Last year, I did very few races leading up to IM and for me that was an error. I need some "practice" sessions to get me in the right frame of mind, especially if one of your disciplines is weaker than the others. I would do August. Thanks Suzy that was the kind of feedback I was looking for. I was leaning that way in my gut. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Back from a week of skiing with the kids. What a great trip. We are all skiing the same slopes now and it was FUN. For the first time in about 7 years, I am not signed up for a race or on a plan. BUT my big news - my wife has signed up for her first Tri in October. After a couple of years talking about it, she finally pulled the trigger on registration. This is going to be fun. |

Mild enough that I still worked out today but I sure wasn't in the mood. Let's hope for better workouts this weekend! I was dragging some the first half of my run this evening. For me I have been remodeling my bathroom and was crawling under the house, pulling a toliet, and replacing some drywall (AKA Vacation) so I know where some of my tiredness was coming from. I can't wait for my monthly massage on Monday evening. Bike, strength, swim and run left for this weekend, plus more remodeling. Wife andson are going to see The Hobbitt so I'll be able to get some things done. Very long movie... 2 hrs. 46 min. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Being fairly certain that having a chicken biscuit & diet mountain dew 30 minutes before race time isn't going to get me through a HIM (let alone an ironman), how does one begin to dial in nutrition? Most of my workouts for the next several months are less than two hours, which historically isn't going to require fueling on the go for me. Even going back to my marathon days, I have always lived off the course so this is completely new territory for me. I have read a lot of threads with fueling ideas, goals, etc ... but still haven't figured out how you go about trying them over such short workouts. And I don't want to wait until this summer when my workouts get longer to begin. How did y'all go about this process? |

I was so glad yesterday was my rest day. Would not have been able to work out. Luckily I got the antibiotics going last night and was feeling a little better today. I just hope this is a one time episode as I haven't had one in like 15 years. Hoping it doesn't have anything to do with all the sweaty spandex. lol |

I have read a lot of threads with fueling ideas, goals, etc ... but still haven't figured out how you go about trying them over such short workouts. And I don't want to wait until this summer when my workouts get longer to begin. How did y'all go about this process? There are two schools of camp on fueling for shorter workouts 1) drink H20, maybe take in some electrolytes so you can teach your body to burn as fuel or 2) fuel on anything over an hour at a rate of X CHOs/ hour and X oz fluid/hour. I've done both. In a sample size of one, I have found that not depriving my body of fuel allows for a stronger workout and a faster recovery. Both are important as you ramp up distance to IM. I would start by determining how many CHOs you need to take in per hour and do a sweat test to determine how much fluid you should be drinking. Personally I wouldn't rely on threads, I would rely on a reputable, schooled nutrtionist to help with both. It doesn't mean you have to hire someone, it could mean a book. Once you're armed with that info you can begin to test various products to meet the requirements. Are solids ok? or do fluids work best? what types of sugars can your body handle? a single source like malodextrin or multiple sources like what is found in Powerbar products. While you are right that you won't know for sure what works until you start doing some longer efforts you can definitely get started on the process. When I was just a runner, I used this to calculate my calorie requirements for the marathon. I have since migrated to calculating CHOs instead, but it is good enough to get you started. If you visit the Infinit library they have a similar calculation for cycling and pretty good info on digestion overall. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I need to share a small victory. On Jan 1 I ran four miles for the first time ever. I kept a steady pace for the first three miles and then gave it all that I had for the fourth. Here were my splits:
I've been sick the last few days so I haven't been able to workout at all. This morning I decided to try for more distance so I promised to settle on the pace that I thought I could sustain. I made it for six miles!
Now, I almost didn't post this because I know there's a large percentage of this group that's done at least one IM. I was thinking that your inner monologue would sound something like "I ran a full marathon after riding a bike for 112 miles. Your quarter marathon isn't that cool." But then I realized that this group's purpose is to encourage, motivate and instruct beginners so I'm sharing this victory with you. I'm seriously considering altering my goals to participate in a HM in late March. Caleb |

And yes... those of us who have done an IM don't give two $#!&s about having done that after the long bike ride. Really, we spent most of our long training rides thinking, "I'm going to run a marathon after this? What kind of crazy lunatic am I??? And I paid money to do this??" We all started at square one. I think what you did is great. I'll never forget the first time I ran 8 miles. I was so proud of myself I came home and entered a marathon. Ha!! |
