dalessit - 2009-07-06 5:32 PM Welcome back Steve, hope the vacation was good.

So I am back to being bored in the pool.  Running, have a Marathon to look forward to and based on my race my tempo runs are now supposed to be done at 8:10 pace (gulp!)  And lots of bike races and riding with race team so the motivation is to not get dropped there.  For swimming I have a 300M pool swim and a 750M OWS and nothing else until probably Lonestar next April, so no motivation there at all...

Hey Tony

Given the focus on the marathon and bike races, is it possible you should just back off on swimming a little and not get too concerned until you start training for the HIM?

Also keep meaning to ask you what your splits were for the 4 mile race.

Suzy

No idea.  I went with only a watch for time, didn't take the Garmin.  Lowell (coach) suggested I try running without it since I told him I get kind of fixated on it.  Funny, I was actually going to wear it anyways but I was reading an article about leaving the watch at home in one of our localish running papers, Lowell wrote the article... I took it as a sign to leave the watch at home.

Chet:

If you decide to ship it and Raleigh works better for you than Charlotte, you can ship it to me. I'll send you my address. You can either come to my house or I wi;; meet you at the RDU airport and bring your baby to you. I work not far from the airport and go by it on my commute.

I am sure Lowell knows best, but it would have been great to see if you were pretty even or negative splitted which would suggest you had something left in the tank.  Next time!  Really impressive race.  I think you have a lot of upside.

Actually that was me posting again as her, I just didn't want to get yelled at for logging her out of her laptop so I came downstairs...

Yeah chet check out that thread on ST lots of good info on bike travel.  Though if you can send it to Dougs house that might be the best option, get LBS to pack it up for you.  If travelling with, Southwest, JetBlue and Virgin look to be the best bets at 50 bucks a pop.  The other airlines are inconsistent.

Sam and I were looking into it for Miami and to have it packed by LBS, shipped, re-assembled by LBS on the other end with a tune up, and packing it back up after race and shipping it home for 2 bikes was appx 1,000 bucks.  Another reason we took the auto train down.

I am guessing I didn't have a negative split, I am pretty sure my first mile was not to much over 7:00, it's an out and back and there is a slight downhill going out and a slight uphill heading back.  I was annoyed though not having the garmin, I am so used to that instant feedback.

Question for you infinit folks.  Just got mine.  I went for  basically a Marathon mixture customized a bit.

For say my 10 mile long run, I want to test it out, how much should I be using.

If you go to the Infinit website under the library there is a great article on calculating calories needs for running.  When I am doing marathons, I replace roughly 30% of what I burn.  The only difference between me and the article is I start drinking at about the 2m mark and I don't supplement with H20 until very late in the race when I start to tire of Infinit.

cbarnes1 - 2009-07-06 7:17 PM Welcome back Steve and Congrats!  Well deserved BTer of the month.

I have been looking at transport possibilities for my bike to NC for B2B.  I looked at carry cases to take on the plane but they all seem to be over the 80 inch regulation (Length + width + height).  The closest I have found is 87 inches.  My brother-in-law lives in Charlotte so shipping may be the best option.  I am terrified of shipping though.  That is how I got my current bike (the used one I bought was crushed).  I really just want to buy a seat for it on the plane and seatbelt it in.  Any thoughts?  Any cases under 80 inches?

Also, anyone use Swedish Goggles?  I bought them last year and love them.  8 bucks and they never wear out.

Chet

Can't comment on the carry case, but on the Swedes~  don't use them for OWS.  They are not very stable on your face.  I am saying this as a huge fan (would not use anything else during my competitive days).  I used them in the first tri I ever did and had them knocked off.  Although they are so comfy, they just don't provide a good seal against your face and come off even with the slightest bump.

Oh, and welcome back Steve and congrats!!

I wish my swim was better.  My swim time from the Montclair Triathlon a couple of weeks ago was actually 20 seconds slower than last year's time.  I know it is all in my technique.  I posted this on the main triathlon talk forum and hope it is ok to cross post it.  Here it is:

Need to improve my technique for the swim.  When I started tri's, I saw that somebody highly recommended the Finis Forearm Fulcrum to improve swim technique.  Here is what they are:  http://www.finisinc.com/en/P-10502850/Forearm-Fulcrum-Sr  For some reason or another, I never got comfortable with them and put them away in the closet.

Fast forward a year and my swim still stinks.  When I was with my Master's group, I asked the coach about my technique and she said that my stroke itself was a bit sloppy and recommended that I use a set of paddles.  I saw these Finis Freestyler paddles:  http://www.finisinc.com/en/P-10502050/Freestyler-Hand-Paddles that seem like they are pretty cool.

Question-- should I get the Freestyler paddles or should I just continue trying to use the forearm fulcrum? Do they complement each other or are they both specific tools that have a different purpose?

Thanks,
-Nick

Well, I am flying Delta - $175 each way to check a bike.  They gave a size limit on the case which was under what I could find.  The Slow Twitch thread was very informative, wished I saw it before I booked my flight.

Doug- you guys are all great.  Always willing to help each other, I'm always impressed.  I will be staying in Charlotte the week before the race so I'll pick it up then.  Thanks so much for the offer.  If they crush this bike, have a 54 cm handy?

I will ship- insurance is great but I can't ride insurance for 112 miles .  Took 3 months to get my bike last time.  My LBS is reasonable, should be good there.

I raced last year in the Swedes, didn't think about them getting knocked off.  I make sure I am in front so I don't get kicked (not really).  I hate to give them up now.  I bought the bungie straps for them, may help.

Thanks everyone for the input,  Chet

The last 4 days of training have been great. I am not sure what is happening, but the runs, swims and bike rides have all felt great. Without giving it my all I rode the Triangle Triathlon bike route at 21.3 mph and then ran strong off the bike. I have had good swims followed by endophin rushes, and today and sunday I had strong running sessions. This mornings was one of those runs that happens once and while where you free like your floating over the ground (as opposed to trudging through mud).

I have been trying to go to bed earlier and that may be helping but I have not been able to fall asleep quickly when I do this. (Hmm...) Anyway I am hoping that this keeps up through Sundays race.

I might be the last one of the group that should be giving you advice on swimming, but I will start the ball rolling.  First, the advice from your Masters group coach is lame.  What the heck does a sloppy stroke even mean? and how do you fix it?  Second,  I have not found "toys" to be the best mechanism to improve my stroke.  For me,  it has been the helpful insight of three different coaches.  Each gave me advice on how to fine tune my stroke and given me very specific drills to get there.  If I were you, I would search out a coach for a couple of private lessons.  You obviously are already finishing triathlons so it might be a tweak here and there that makes a big difference.

oops, sorry forgot about your post Nick.  I was going to say the same thing as Suzy.  You need to find a coach that can work with you one on one.

I don't know guys... "SLOPPY" seems pretty defined!!!

Nick-ditch the coach.  What does sloppy mean.  None of that makes sense...If it is your hips, feet, head, etc... No toys for that!!!  Ask the coach what sloppy means then we can go from there...

To all--- MJ Memorial http://mashable.com/2009/07/06/watch-michael-jackson-memorial/

Last night I had a nice care package at my door.... Includes 2 sets of TEAM OUCH tires as well!  Pretty sweet deal- 1 Short Sleeve Jersey, 1 Long Sleeve (thick) Jersey, 1 Jacket (with pockets in rear), 2 hats, 1 set of Arm Warmers, and lots of stickers!

I dunno, I would probably ask the coach what she meant by sloppy and try to get some specific drills to straighten up the stroke.  You have to be careful with paddles and what not as they can lead to shoulder strain and injury if over used or not used properly.  If you can't get a straight answer, find another coach.
