dalessit - 2010-06-07 8:32 PM Met with my coach today, he wants me to shoot for 6:30 pace in a 5k tomorrow.

LOL, should be interesting... I actually added that up and that would be a 20:09 5k.

Pretty sure I can hold that for one mile.  LOL, Sam might have to finish and come back with a stretcher for me at mile 1.1.

I agree that is quite the pace.  However, I would suggest that Sam wear one of those fireman hats with the built in siren ...... then you know she is on the way to save your A$$!

DJ:

My answers are going to be more questions.

CyborgQueen - 2010-06-08 12:14 AM Bike questions - I'm working on converting my bike into more aggressive ride. I'm considering buying aerobars.

Bear in mind that the basic geometry of your frame will limit how much of a change you can make. Road and tri geometries are very different. I have spearate road and tri bikes for this reason.

However - Since my body will be shifted forward, I'm concerned that my saddle will not be comfortable (it's getting to the point where I'm starting to feel uncomfortable - mainly due to the weight loss, but I'm going to wait a while before seriously considering replacing it...it was expensive).   What do you call "them", where you attach a "thing" on your seat post and your saddle to bring it more forward. I can't bring my saddle forward anymore because it has reached the max.

I would consider a new saddle and selling the old one in the classifieds here. If the saddle does not meet your needs than the fact that it cost a lot is irrelevant.

Secondly - do you think it's worth buying a carbon handlebars? Specifically this one: FSA K-Force Carbon Fiber Road Handlebars 40 cm 31.8mm diameter?  Someone I know is selling this for $80, and I'm not sure if it's really that all valuable to me.  A cyclist I know has really nice carbon handlebars, but because it's made for road riding, the aerobars won't fit on it (it's flat on top for more hand comfort).

While the price on those bars is very good, if they are new, my question is why do you want them? In hwat way will you benefit from them? Something is only a bargain if you will you it and it meets your needs. Here it sound like these bars will not help you with regard to achieving a more aero position.

Lastly - what's with all the different type of clip-on aerobars?! Any recommendations for someone with short arms?

People and bikes come in all shapes and sizes, hence "all the different type of clip-on aerobars." I have no recommedation for someone with short arms. I would go to the LBS and ask to try different ones out. This is a personal thing, so only you can answer what feels good to you.

Thanks!

Finally, I highly recommend getting a bike fit. It is some of the best $ you will spend. Better than an aero-helmet or solid rear wheel, etc.

*****Serious Question Allert******

To all you fast swimmers out there,  I've been thinking a lot about why my pool times aren't making an appearance in open water and, aside from learning how to draft, here is my theory.  I know that my comfortable stroke is very long and drawn out which means a nice glide but slow turn over rate. When I want to go faster in the pool I increase the turn over rate and I speed up (imagine that.)  I know if I've slowed down b/c my stroke count goes down and my time goes up per lap and I can adjust accordingly.  However, in long distance open water swims I think I might be falling back into my "casual" stroke rate and therefore slowing down.  How do I maintain a faster turn over rate without laps or time to reference?  Does this make sense?  HELP!!!

That is an interesting theory - I have always chalked up slower times in OWS to having less of a glide and a higher stroke count...  I find that I cannot get that extra second off the glide for each stroke, causing me to turn my arms over faster, causing faster fatigue and then a slowing down of turnover back to my normal rate with a shorter glide...

Hey Sam on the Monday you guys could be the 'typical' park goers and get yourselves in those rental wheelchairs and go around the park like that!!!

Hey Sugar. Very interesting. I found that my OWS were almost always faster than my pool times. This may be because I don't keep track of lap times in the pool.. I only clock out at the end and then figure out my lap time. In that way I get into a specific stroke rate which I carry through to the OWS. Using the same stroke rate and focusing on the technique along with not having to turn at the end of the pool and being able to draft in open water allows me to actually swim faster OWS.  For yourself I would say you should focus more on your stroke cadence in OWS for a little while. Push yourself outside so that you feel a bit uncomfortable. I think you can correct this wtihout too much effort.

I always assumed my OWS times were slower because I didn't have a wall to push off of for free speed every 25m, in OWS you have to sight every so often so that can break up rhythm, other people in OWS that you have to swim around, current, changing water conditions, etc, etc.

Thinking on my OWS last weekend, I think you are right.  It is probably not any one thing, but all together it impacts your swim time.  I did notice I lost a lot of momentum every time I sighted.  Maybe there are better ways to do it, but I come to a dead stop every time I lift my head up to sight the buoys, etc.

As for the VT, I just entered my swim time using my OWS from the weekend.  I guess that gives the girls a bit of a break unless I decide to do a TT later this week in the pool.   Actually, my swim time will give them a break either way......

I finished my VT swim last night. Not my best time but at least reasonable and better than last Satruday. Followed up with a short run.  I changed back to my Adidas for this run and the calves felt a little better last night and much better today. Maybe it's only psychological but if it works who cares.

I went to the doctor last night and sure enough she thinks I have some tendinitis in my shoulder. Physio and an ultra sound on the agenda for the next little while.  She also suggested I take some motrin or advil regularly for about a week or so. Sure hope that clears this up before my Oly in two weeks.

After my race on Satruday I kept thinking all weekend that I am not ready for my OLympic in a couple of weeks. Monday morning I told myself to HTFU and go finish my trainnig and do the race (in under 3 hours). Whew I almost talked myself into changing the race to a sprint. I'm really glad now I didn't.

On Wednesday we are going to run a super sprint for the tri clininc I have been worrking with. This should be a lot of fun. I will be able to do the race and get a workout at the same time. I'll be going back and forth between the racers so should  get a good workout.

Congrats to all the other racers this last week.

Tracy, I don't think drafting is your issue, because you aren't drafting in the pool.
Try this (in practice) start off with your casual, long pull and then start singing a fast, upbeat song.
Sounds silly, but I find the song in my head many times dictates my arm turnover.
But also focus (while singing) on keeping your long pull when you increase your turnover.

Foo Fighters, baby, always the Foo Fighters!!!!

Gotta say, I think I am a crap OWS and it pisses me off. Now, I'm fine with my times being slower/different than they are in the pool. What I'm NOT fine with is knowing that people I can swim circles around in the pool are only moderately slower than I am in OW. Arrrrgh!! I'm guessing one thing working against me is that someone who is less effecient in the pool w/worse body position (i.e. lower in the water) benefits much more greatly from the added buoyancy of a wetsuit than I do. But it's frustrating. I am hoping/planning to do a better job in an IM swim because I'll have more "room" for other people to tire out. In a short race, lots of people can muscle it out for 400-500 yards, I think.

Sighting is an art unto itself. I just barely lift my eyes out of the water while crossing from my left side to my right and right before I breath on my right side. Barely even breaking any rythym. I sight every 6 strokes. If I  am having a good straight swim sometimes I will go 12 strokes before breathing. I have learned that with good technique you tend to swim straighter as you are not pulling harder with one arm than the other.

Hey, let us slow swimmers have something!  I tend to be faster in OW and I think it has to do with two things.  First, I have a higher turnover because I don't need to leave my left hand out as long to breathe with a wetsuit on. Second, I just really want to get the he$$ out of the water before I get bashed by someone the size of Birdy.   That happened to me last night in class.  The biggest guy didn't give a rats @ss how he got from Point A to Point B and it included swimming fully on top of me (and no Trevor I didnt like it)...even though he was doing some crazy zig zag pattern to get there.
