kickitinok - 2010-02-20 12:15 PM I did it! I ran in my first race, and wasn't even nervous

My time: 43:20 - 14th in my age class. I think there were only 20 in my age class. LOL!

I'm not complaining, as this is about 1.5 minutes faster than Thursday's 5K practice run.

It was cold, rainy, foggy, and I'm never up at 6:30 am, much less racing at 8 am. My heart kind of sank when a dude pushing one of those run strollers passed me, then a couple of 60+ y/o people passed, but then I looked behind me and saw a buttload of people so I didn't feel so bad. Kept a steady pace throughout the race - although my HR was high the entire time.

That was fun!

SWEEEEET!!!!  Congratulations.

Speaking of tips - I got one, sorry guys, it will only work on ladies. :-)

Hate your HR Monitor strap being on too snug? NP!

Find a really big bobby pin (ask a friend...I'm pretty sure that at least ONE of your female friends will have them). They're about 2 inches long, and usually used for french rolls etc.

Take your HRM, and make it "loose" enough that it's sitting on your skin, but not so loose that when you breath in, it will fall down.

Take the bobby pin, and attach the back of the strap to your sports bra. Ta da! No more falling down, no more feeling like you can't breath in when it's on too snug, no more squishy boobs (well, luckily I'm fine, but some more "well endowed" women it bothers them).

When I'm on a bike ride, I tend to put two in the back, and make the strap looser than if I used it for the run. Usually the sweat/water on the front plastic part keeps that part in place.

I've tried to make it just about snug, but it falls down when I breath in, yet it gets really tight when I breath out. Plus I'm one of those people that consciously can feel the HRM the entire time.

And oh yeah, my fiance gave me a joke idea, but it's a good idea nevertheless - why can't Garmin create a sports bra for women, and use the newer HRM sensor which is way smaller than the entire chest sensor and put it in the cleavage area in a small pocket specifically made for that. Ta-Da! No more HRM strap crap. :-)  Good idea?

Trina-GREAT JOB!!!!  It's an awesome feeling to see the fruits of your labor for the first time!  Congratulations on achieving your first milestone.

As for me, I did my long run today by starting with an easy 2miles on the treadmill while waiting for my kids to finish swim lessons, then I rolled right into the rest of my run outside for a total run today of 12.5 miles.  This comletes my week of running with a new high weekly mileage of 32 miles!  This is my best week ever by 4 miles.  WOOHOO, and I still have about 5 weeks until my half marathon on March 28th.  I think I may squeeze in a 15 miler about 2 weeks prior then taper down.

I hope every one has agreat weekend!

Very cool.  Congrats on the race.

And don't worry about getting passed by strollers, kids and senior citizens.  It happens to all of us.  hehe if you want the official term you got strollered...

Excellent job Trina!!!  And never worry about getting passed by baby joggers...some of those people are freaks of nature!  You are definitely on your way....you may have been 14 out of 20 in your AG, but next time top 50%!

Paul-great job on making use of the TM and then hitting the great outdoors for your long run. Can't wait til I can hit those distances again.

Today is our last full day in Kauai....the weather is once again perfect.  Goal is to get one last ocean swim done and then consumer my final Lava Flow of the trip.  Tomorrow it will be a run before heading to the airport around noon!

Tell your fiance it will never work there...a lot of us don't have cleavage!   Polar actually had a bra that allowed you to weave the strap through it for greater comfort.  Not sure if it still exists or not.  I don't have a problem with the straps at all....have you tried spitting on the sensors to get them to pick up without having to tighten the strap?

So.....I got "Strollered," eh? That's so funny! My husband actually did the race - he walked the entire time. He was at the very back of the pack with all the families. He said this one family had a wagon with three kids in it that they were pulling, and one woman actually had her daughter on a bike and was having to hold her up a lot. He had to help them keep up with their things - jackets, toys, various items they kept dropping, he'd pick them up and hand it to them. He was going to speed-up and lose them, but at the moment he decided to do so there was a grade decline and the wagon gained momentum and beat him to the finish line! So I guess he got "Wagoned." Hahahahah! OMGosh! Too funny! He was such a good sport about it

There actually is a sports bra that has a built in HR strap.  I'm not sure if it's Adias or Polar but my coach was telling me about it.  I always have problems w/ my strap imprinted into my skin after really long runs/races.  Body glide does not help.

I managed to get in my personal 12k race today.  I found a snow free, traffic free place to run.  I finished in 1:04:09 which is a few min. faster than my race time from last year but the terrain wasn't quite the same.  However it was probably the best tempo/hard run I've ever done in training.  I really pushed myself and I think I was going at race pace.  So all in all good day.

kickitinok - 2010-02-20 12:15 PM I did it!

That is AWESOME!!!  Congratulations.  Enjoy that great feeling!

CyborgQueen - 2010-02-20 12:46 PM Speaking of tips - I got one, sorry guys, it will only work on ladies.

There actually is a sports bra that has a built in HR strap.  I'm not sure if it's Adias or Polar but my coach was telling me about it.  I always have problems w/ my strap imprinted into my skin after really long runs/races.  Body glide does not help.

I don't wear the strap... I have removed it and just slide the HRM under my sports bra. Sometimes I have tracking problems if it's not a tighter bra, but have pretty much figured out which ones work for running. I am not well-endowed and a sports bra is really just a formality for me (TMI?), so not sure if that works if you have girls you actually need to protect. I do use ba-bump <sp?> cream in the summer on the bike, as with less clothing the wind really tweaks my HRM (sends it to 200+ when I'm going downhill -- yeah, right!).
