So you did a triple the day before day 1 of marathon training.  You're a nut.  I like that

Why, thank you kindly! But the triple was just a long split into 3 shorter runs. First time I ever did that and it's lot easier than a long of the same length. I really don't want to do many of those but it was necessary to find out pacing and Ragnar needs.

This sent me to Google to learn what Ragnar is. That sounds like FUN! Have you done it before? Are you doing it with people you know? Which one are you doing? I am from the Memphis area, the East TN one sounds great!

I've done the Ragnar Relay with a lot of hospital peeps. One of the hardest block of running I did...Because I wanted to 'RACE' and others were much smarter and enjoyed the experience. I always try to bring my very best and tried to hold a very hard pace for the 22 miles or so that I ran over 24 hrs.

That 2am 9miler was BRUTAL. and dozing in the van and running again 6 hrs later was even harder...

but it was mucho fun! Think about doing it, because it is a blast!

am 4 miles. pm 3.7 miles. Or roughly so, my Garmin is a goner. Purpose: doubles, base.

Sorry I misquoted on JD about zones. I guess what I should have said is that right now, RL isn't allowing me to read JD and learn about it right now. I am interested in the book but it will have to wait a while until work stops being a pain in the butt.

Regarding Ragnar, it's my first. And it's a random group of total strangers. And I'm so excited I can't see straight! A couple of years ago, friends asked me to do a Ragnar with them but I was training for my first mary and just couldn't. Then about 6 months ago, I became obsessed with doing one. I didn't want the headache and heartache of putting a team together myself so I signed up as a team member of a Ragnar-like relay for next March. But then I still kept looking at TN Ragnar and Key West Ragnar. I found this random team and jumped in. Getting to know them thru FB and I'm loving it.

Lynn, Yay, on having one more long and then taper. Have fun at Chicago!

Today's workout was two x 15' tempo runs at 6;30 pace on the trails. Surging on the uphills, recovering on the down. We did it in the woods which was awesome because while a relatively small park, it's very dense with trails so you would see (and hear) various groups of teammates flying through the woods- up sbove uou on a Ridge or doen below running along the creek bed. It was so challenging by the end of the 15 minutes even my teeth hurt. Then we had to do it all again. At the end of the second 15 minutes I though my legs were going to give out. Finally we wrapped up with 5 x 30Second hills, hard. It's amazing how much you can continue to push, even when your body is hinting otherwise.dt

OK, that sounds like it would be really fun, though not the 2 x 15' @ 6:30--that sounds downright impossible right now.  Nice run:)

I haven't been trail running since I've had my kids, and I LOVE it. Especially in the late fall.   Good stuff.   I ordered some shoes last week.

And what marathon are you doing? And what are your goals?

I am running the Air Force marathon and my goals will be determined race day by how I feel during the race. The reason I say this is I have a very heavy fall racing schedule, I finished my first 100 miler on the 17th of August( actually finished on the 18th started on 17th). I then ran the Mt Nittany marathon two weeks later on the 1st of September (3:46 in hot hilly humid and hungover conditions, I got good and drunk the night before the race) and now three weeks after that I running the Air Force marathon. Under 4 hours is the first goal but if I am feeling it and the weather is good I will go for a sub 3:20. If I do not get it I am running the New Hampshire marathon on the 5th of October and then driving to Maine and running the Maine marathon on the 6th of October.

I then have a local half marathon I run every year on the 12th of October then a two week break and I will be running the Marine Corps marathon on the 27th of October. Then two weeks after that I will be running the Soldiers marathon in Georgia on the 9th of November. I know it makes me tired and sore just typing all this. My goals for all of them are under 4 hours and I want to go sub 3:20 this calander year so one of these I will be trning it loose. My best to date is 3:24 this June in some hot hilly condtions in Ann Arbor.

I do not think it will be at the Air Force this weekend as i am still feeling a little beat up from the 100 miler but who knows I did manage a 3:46 hungover is some very tough condtions on a tough course as well and felt I could've run it faster.

4 miles today.  Easy running with strides at the end.

I've enjoyed this recovery week.  Usually when I recover during tri season I just take extra days off.  This active recovery I've been doing seems much better suited for me.

Active recovery is amazing. I still take days (or sometimes just a day) completely off after a big event but then I just spend some time running for the fun of it. I LOVE that time.

I forget to mention, last night's workout was a combo purpose. Hill strength and steady-state tempo running. All for cross country simulation.

6 miles easy.  Purpose: part of mini-taper for race this weekend.  It's a run, road bike, mtb bike, trail run, kayak relay.  I have to do part of the initial run and the 18 mile road bike leg.  Should be interesting.

Oh yeah, trail running is fantastic. I wouldn't quite put this kind of workout in the same bucket as I was desperately trying to hang onto the pack BUT it was really cool. Our group goes there often, as there is a beastly gravel hill we often do repeats on.

I put these in my blog but this is what the terrain is like:

It's a whole lot more enjoyable at an easier pace Smile

Things like that do not slip past me.  We have a few great microbreweries where I am on first name basis with everyone that has ever worked at them.  Too bad you couldn't come up Saturday and run.  We'd hold a spot for you.

Sigh--this is why I would love the Pacific NW.

We don't have anything like that here, but ours are beautiful in a different way.  I'll take some pics and post when I go.

I did see a four foot fox snake across the path on my run today.  That was cool.

You mentioned your hill strategy in you RR.  Can you talk about that a little bit here?   Form and pace wise what do you try to do on the hills and is that also what you do when you're training?

That would not be cool in my book.  I hate snakes.  They really freak me out.  I had a big snake cross the path at about the 14 mile mark of a marathon I did and I waited for these two girls behind me to let them go first and I tucked in behind them. {shudder, shudder}

Hill strategy would be different for me for different races and even different hills. I will give you an example based on my last XC race but keep in mind my strategy changes with context.

The course I was on was mainly long, moderate grades and a few shorter steep hills (both ups and downs)

On the long moderate uphills, I increase intensity slightly as I go up the hill, accelerating over the crest. As for form, increase leg turnover (kind of like when you get in an easy gear for an uphill on a bike) On the downhills of similar grade, I would "recover" increasing leg turnover and speed, but because of the downhill it's less intense. I keep my hands low (mainly to keep my knees low) and land on my forefoot to keep the momentum forward.

On the short uphills I would straight up ATTACK. I am a good hill runner for whatever reason so I use this as a strength. Same with the downhill. I had pretty good traction as it hadn't rained so I flew down the short hills quite recklessly, which can be a gamble.
