Depends on who you ask....I told coach Steve I wanted to go on a long weekend to Florida in early March.  He told me it was fine as long as I take my bike.  Basically from now until Setpember 12th, more than 2 days off the bike in a row is a problem.  Who knew?

gdale - 2010-02-22 8:18 AM Glen - awesome job on the indoor tri.  To improve in all three areas is a great thing!

Doug - nice job on the run.  You have been dedicated to your plan and are going to rock your race in few weeks!

Suzy - welcome back to reality.  How many weeks until your next vacation?!?

Canada peeps....well, never mind.

I had a forced low activity week last week after getting sick but feel like I am close to being back to 100%.  Just need to get rid of the last of this cough.  This was my first weekend since New Year's that I did not ski...I actually enjoyed the break!  Was able to do my 9 mile run yesterday with no issues.  This afternoon's swim will be the tell tale point of if I am good to go.

Have a good week!
George

At least you know what you love as a result of this exeprience!  Different strokes I guess, I find extreme joy at the end of a long training run or half marathon to marathon.  Really LOVE IT which is why this off season has been such a tragedy for me.....I do find joy in triathlon training which the variety and a great sense of accomplishment when I finish a race, but triathlon is so much more complicated than lacing up your shoes, slapping on your bib and going!  I love both for different reasons.

DougRob - 2010-02-22 8:26 AM Thanks for the inspires and comments. As Fatty said I am want to get this race over already.

I have learned a lot. Not the least of which is: I would rather being doing a triathlon! I come to triathlon as a former bike racer. I am not a natural runner. Being honest with myself, I look like a hockey player when I am out running (cause I am). My feet "thrum" for a couple hours after each long run. Today my back is a little tender, hammys are tight and I am raw in some places.

GOod news is the compression shorts rocked! The odd thing about long distance running for me is that there is no sense of elation at the end, just relief that it is over. At the end of a tri I feel sad it is over and can't wait for the next one.

Maybe that will change if I can dial in the nutrition and drop some more lbs.

Anyway, 26.2 is probably gonna "hurt real bad." Laughing

dalessit - 2010-02-21 2:39 PM Also, if you can believe it I did my first run based solely on HR today.

I usually just pick a pace and run that,  might also throw in some RPE and HR  to keep things in check but normally base things on pace.

Ended up running faster than I normally would for my LSD runs.  All I did was try to keep it in Z2 for the whole run.  Other than that first part of the run where my HR shoots up then comes back down I did it.

LOL, I think sometimes I fall into collecting a lot of data but not really using it the way I should, anyone else do this?

Good job on sticking with your plan and seeing your overall pace drop!

So true, Tony!  I never realized how much of a Z1 lover I was (still am...my coach doesn't give me too many workouts in Z1 anymore).  My Zone 1 has dropped by a full minute since all of this Z2 and Z3 training over the course of the last 6 months...it is shocking.  For me, it is still an effort to go hard enough to get into Zone 2, let alone 3....still working on that part of the equation.

Why not just buy one for the weekend and then give it to goodwill??

Glad you can make Lonestar now Suz. Even if you have to walk the run, you can keep me company out there...Eventually I'd catch up to you I'd hope.

What a wonderful weekend all around!

Glen - outstanding on your race registrations. When in doubt, train for the olympic and the sprint will feel like a piece of cake.  And great job on that race.

Steve- better living through chemistry!  Glad all went well and TAKE YOUR TIME!!!

Trina - THAT IS SO AWESOME!!!!!   At my first 5K I finished DEAD LAST!   We are talking police escort in!

Sam - way to go on that 12K.  I think we need to hook up for a relay:  Linda swim, I'll bike, and you can run. We'd kill em!

Doug - congrats on your run Sunday. It was such a beautiful day to be outside wasn't it?  I chased my Doug around Chatham Co on my bike for 2 hours.  Being in aero for 35 miles when you haven't been riding at all wasn't a smart move. But it was so georgous outside.

As you know I heart Mrs. Corbin...from her blog the other day. It was her birthday, and she always does these 'epic' birthday workouts. Here is this years:

The plan was this:
1 hour ride
40 minute run
1 hour ride
30 minute run
1 hour ride
20 minute run
1 hour ride
10 minute run

It was a day for the books. Each ride varied in intensity (they seemingly didn't get any easier!), and each run picked up the pace on each round. To make it extra challenging, the transition of going from hot & sweaty in the man-cave, to freezing and fast in the cool Montana air brought a whole new meaning to the training term - BRICK.

WOW!!

Insane!! And I'm sure she loved every minute of it. Does anyone else follow Catra Corbett (a.k.a. Dirt Diva)? Her blog is trailgirl.blogspot.com. She's an ultra runner (mentioned in Born to Run) and every year for her birthday she runs an hour for her age. I think she's 44. You do the math. OUCH!!!

Doug -- awesome run. The long training runs do get grueling, but just wait until you cross the finish line for your marathon. I always have a good cry, partly from physical and mental exhaustion, but also just the sheer joy of every mile that was put in the months before led me to that moment. It's a beautiful thing. Congrats having your last long one behind you!

Tracy -- yay for your girl!! I can imagine it was awe-inspiring to watch her ride. So awesome!

Fatty -- yeah, I knew you were easy...

Well despite some car issues last week I still managed to get most of my workouts in.  Only had to cut 1 run short.  We'll see how this week comes out.  My DH wants to take me out to dinner on Wednesday for my b-day (it's tomorrow) and Thursday night one of the tri groups in the area is having a wetsuit demo at one of the nearby pools.  I'd like to attend that since I'll probably need a wetsuit for my tri in May.  It'll give me an idea of what will work for me.  So training on those 2 days may have to be re-arranged some.  Hopefully I'll still get everything worked in this week.

OK, I know this is dumb but I need to get it off my chest.  I found out yesterday that my SIL is running the same half marathon that I am in April.  She's been running for maybe 6 months or so (I think she started as a way to lose weight).  I've been running for over 3 years, but I'm still so slow that she'll probably finish before me.  I know I should be happy for her and I shouldn't be comparing times (especially since the race hasn't even happened yetUndecided), but I find it very frustrating.  I was finally starting to feel like I was making some improvements in my running - even placing in my AG for some races - but this has really burst my bubbleFrown.  Running was my thing - something I did better than anyone else in the family, no matter how slow I was (mainly because I was the only one doing it) and now I kind of feel like that's being taken away from me - not intentionally I'm sure, but the feeling is still there.  So what do I do?  I know the easy (and right) answer is "get over it", but right now that doesn't seem as easy as it sounds.

OK, enough with the pity party - sorry, just needed to get that out.

On a good noteLaughing, I feel like I'm making big improvements in my swimming.  I was able to do a 3x100 set in one of my workouts last week.  The last 25 of each was tough and I think I'm going to repeat this week of the program so I can get more comfortable doing the 100's, but it's coming along nicely.  As much as I hate doing drills, I really think they're helping.

Off to get caught up - I'm about 8 pages behind.

Congrats on the swimming improvement and HBD early!! Enjoy dinner with the hubs!

I TOTALLY get your feelings about your sister. I have them about my husband all of the time -- and feel so petty about it! But I hate it that I work my tail off and he doesn't and then he can keep up with me or (worse!) beat me. But the true way to overcome that FOR ME is to turn it into an opportunity... An opportunity to train harder, to focus on myself, to find joy in other's victories (really, we want those we love to be active and healthy, right?!), to help and assist (I do the research and have the experience, my husband asks me questions and I share willingly that which I have learned), to support... It's just a mental mind shift and a reminder that we are who we are, we live our own lives and have our own strengths. We can't control others and what they do or how fast or strong they are. We are all us and it's a beautiful thing! So go out and kick your sister's @$$!!! (ha ha -- only kidding!) Hang in there and try not to let it get you down!

gdctex - 2010-02-19 3:18 PM Ok, I finally committed to a set of events for 2010.  I signed up for the Tri-Texas Race Series today.  This starts with an event on 4/10 (Gateway to the Bay - Sprint) and then the Bridgeland Tri (Sprint) on 8/08, then the Houston Tri (an Olympic distance!) on 9/26.  I think I signed up in time to get some free gear just for signing up for the full series.

There, I did it, I committed to doing an Olympic distance in 2010.....now, what the heck have I got myself into now....I suspect I need to switch over to an Olympic training plan sometime soon.  I am feeling like I have jumped off the proverbial cliff at the moment....but excited about the possibilities.

Anyway, any advice/suggestions etc on switching from training for sprint distances to olympic distances is appreciated.

Thanks.

Congrats on signing up!  I've been contemplating jumping off that same cliffSmile.  I'm already registered for a sprint in May and may also do one in July, but my goal for the year has been an Olympic in Aug.  I need to register soon though - less than 200 spots are left and it'll sell out pretty soon.

kickitinok - 2010-02-20 11:15 AM I did it! I ran in my first race, and wasn't even nervous

My time: 43:20 - 14th in my age class. I think there were only 20 in my age class. LOL!

I'm not complaining, as this is about 1.5 minutes faster than Thursday's 5K practice run.

It was cold, rainy, foggy, and I'm never up at 6:30 am, much less racing at 8 am. My heart kind of sank when a dude pushing one of those run strollers passed me, then a couple of 60+ y/o people passed, but then I looked behind me and saw a buttload of people so I didn't feel so bad. Kept a steady pace throughout the race - although my HR was high the entire time.

That was fun!

Congrats on a great race!

John- First off it was Cabo by private plane, not Costa Rico.  Realize your attention to detail might be a little lacking due to high beer consumption.....Second of all, I would trade every one of those trips and my new bike to have had running health all year long. No lie.  Third of all, I won't be in shape to kick your a*& during the race, but I will be in tongue lashing shape to come close to making you cry like a schoolgirl......your friend.

Tracy--so cool for you and your daughter.  Nice to see she has a sport she is passionate about, even at that young age.

Janet--I can totally understand what you are saying.  With two injuries in the last two years, I have lost a lot while my friends continue to gain speed and strength.  What I have learned along the way is you need to look at performance from one race to the next and be happy with your gains.  As was said, your life is full of a lot of other stuff besides running.  Tough, I know, but it really is the only way to stay positive and love the sport.

DougRob - 2010-02-21 6:19 PM Hello MG. I ran outside today! 18.55 miles in 3:34:06. Not great but I was trying to run at about 6 mph, and then I had some calf cramps in the 2nd half. I have to work on adjusting the nurition. Kept it from getting too bad and even had a late mile at about 6.5 mph. That ws my longest run ever both in time and distance. None of my runs between now and the marathon (4 weeks) will be this long.

Hope all is well with you.

Doug

Awesome running Doug.

Janet - One thing that quickly came to realization to me is that I do endurance sports for fun, and chances are there is always going to be someone faster than me in anything I do.  I am probably in a similar situation with my wife.  She got me into tris because she wanted to do one.  I took it a few levels deeper, but she is still supportive.  I think the biggest thing is that she sees how much it changed our lifestyles and we are glad we are on a healthier path.  Don't let anyone ever take away your accomplishments or diminish them in anyway way.  Each person has their own battles and reasons behind doing things.  Keep up your good work and enjoy it.

I recruit friends to start running or doing tris because I am passionate about them.  Their reasoning for starting is totally different than mine, and some are faster others are just eager to learn and be a part of the community.

Kyla - I may have a code at home, I will do some checking when I get off the trainer tonight.

SSMinnow - 2010-02-22 1:38 PM John- First off it was Cabo by private plane, not Costa Rico.

Ooh ooh somebody has to take a video or at least pics. I want to see John blubbering like a little school boy who just dropped his ice cream in the mud. (or in John's case dropped his beer).

SSMinnow - 2010-02-22 8:38 AM At least you know what you love as a result of this exeprience!

Costa Rico.... Hawaii.... a new bike....   what a tragedy.    damn Suzy i got a tear in my eye for ya.

Laughing

edit.  TOP OF PAGE 200!!!!!!
