CyborgQueen - 2010-06-11 10:03 AM Sorry for not posting much.

First it was my kitty, Keno - I just found out that she has FeLV - Leukemia, so it's been a bit rough for the last couple days. She's "okay" now. Just very anemic.  We have a couple months left with her.  It's been tough because last year we had to put down Blackjack (BEST CAT EVER!!) after just a year of owning him because he succumbed to FIP.  Now Keno - we had her since November. :-(  We're working on treatment options. So far, the only issue she has right now is she's anemic. Her brother, Reno, has been tested negative. There's a chance that he'll be a blood donor.

I'm doing good now and thinking positive, but it is a bit affecting my mental abilities the past few days. I am expecting to have a bit crappy training for the next few days. I am getting "uh I don't feel like doing anything" pangs and starting to feel blah.  I do have finals next week, and I'm off from school for 3 weeks, so hopefully with a much less demanding schedule from school, I will start to feel better and get my groove back.  At first, I was going to just give myself a week or so off from any training, but then I know I will have a bit of a hard time getting back into it. Luckily, my training schedule is not that all demanding as it used to be, so I'm happy if I have to cut a workout short or whatever, but at least I'll get it done. Is that okay?

Second reason why I'm not posting as much is the fact that I'm having problems viewing BT's site on my laptop. My Firefox kept crashing on me, and I tried everything, and decided to download Google Chrome. BT site won't show up, and it won't show up on IE either. So it's very weird, so I'm working on trying to figure out why I can't do stuff on BT (I can view the forums and people's logs, but can't post anything because I'm using Pagewash.com).   So, If you don't hear from me for a while, that's why. :-) I'll try to chime in if something catches my eye. :-)

Mett - Good luck with your coach consultation! I think everyone else covers the bases. If you don't click with her, look for someone else. Ask for client recommendations. See if she has a "trial" period. Most coaches charge monthly, so ask if she has a cancellation policy. Give it a try for a month.

Good luck to all the racers this weekend!

DJ- hope you guys are able to make Keno nice and comfortable...it really sucks when our babies get sick, and the furry ones can't really tell us how they feel.  Never feel bad about missing training or cutting stuff short to be there mentally and or physically for those you love.  Tri/training will be there when life gets more manageable.

As for the BT site being weird, I can access here at work, where we run Firefox/Mozilla but not at home on my Apple which I've tried Safari and Firefox.  Weird!  Well, I should say, i can access it, but it is Super slow.

Julia, I am thinking a sleeveless might be better for me, too!  At my swim this past weekend, my shoulders felt sooo restricted, even though I pulled the sleeves way up to mid-forearm.  I am thinking of renting one before a monday night swim and just see if it helps with that.  The other thing is that my current wetsuit is on it's 4th season, but for how little I use it (snicker, snicker...only in races it seems)  it should still be in good, stretchy condition, I would think?  It is an entry level blue seventy.

Suzy, that video is crazy.  I'm assuming he teaches this to athletes to give them a method if someone is really being an a. but wow, how do you know if it's that or just some directionally challenged person like me?  Yikes.  I don't even like to tap on peeps feet accidently when I come up on them, usually try to veer off a little.

Good luck to all of our racers and praying for good weather for all of you!

We are throwing a big BBQ on Sunday and I'm excited to make our baby back ribs (low and slow on the grill...) for the big gang.
Just send directions and let me know what time!

In defense of the video, Brett coaches many professional/elite athletes so the people he typically gives this advice to are swimming with very strong, aggressive swimmers.  I'll never be in those circles, but a friend who started in the elite wave at GB could have used the tactic.  She said some bozo was being very aggressive and pounding the HE$$ out of her.

So here was my afternoon....go to finally pick up the bike from HE$$ with the new DI2s, leave with nothing, still shifting issues from little to big chain ring. Resign myself to riding Trek 100 and not doing a race on Sunday so make plans with my 86 yo mom only to read my email two hours later and the alarmingly high levels of e coli apparently have vanished and the full race is back on. YEAH! Undecided

Julia -- do you have any good tri stores or tri teams nearby? You might see if you can test a wetsuit before you buy. Several stores here do demo days on the shores of a lake and you can just go and swim in all sorts of wetsuits. Of course then the first one you try ends up feeling the best because it's a M-F'ing-B to get a wetsuit on when you're wet. I thought scuba wetsuits were hard to don wet but they got NOTHING on tri wetsuits!!

Glad ecoli is under control for you WI peeps. Have great races!! Everyone else who is racing, go and crush your courses and come back and tell us all about it!!! I have race envy!

One of two strategies....

1. Short run and pressed for time or traveling for work: Coffee with soymilk creamer....

2. Not pressed for time: coffee with soymilk creamer and then about 30 mins later, 1 piece of Sprouted Grain Toast with a little PBJ.

I almost always eat something before I work out.

If it's a short run, I'll have a glass of water before heading out.  If it's longer than 35-40 minutes, I'll eat a piece of bread (plain, untoasted, that's how I roll), or a couple graham crackers (I know you've got those in the house) or a Hammer Gel and if I'm going beyond an hour I'll take gel and water with me.

For my run this morning I had a gel 10 minutes before heading out and then had another w/ some water about midway.

John-Depends on how far I'm going but anything over five I'll start off with Half a banana or half a bagel with a little pb then be prepared with gels if I'm going long.

Wetsuit peeps. If you live in a warm climate (me), I love my sleeveless short john.  It can be cold to start with but I usually warm up. In TX even in March it's not usually below 60 much.  I'll second the try on part and even ask if you can leave a deposit and try it in open water if they don't have a neverending pool at the shop.  Some stores offer rentals too and will turn the rental into purchase if you like what you tried.

Good Luck to all the racers out there!  Crush it!!!!

Steve,  Good voodoo vibes comin your way!

Holly, Andy -

I drove the bike route when I went to pick up my packet. IMHO, it is dangerous. Portland Ave. is barely a two lane road, incredibly torn-up with potholes and buckles.....and the shoulder is grass and gravel. It looks like they tried to patch some of the bigger potholes, but their attempts at improvement are like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound.....it's that bad. There's also some pretty bad potholes for half a mile on 74th, but not as bad as Portland.

I spoke with one of the race organizers. 89th street was so bad that they altered the course - instead of turning west on 89th street, we continue south to 104th street, then turn west headed toward Portland. So it's just twice around now.

I asked about bike route support and was told that there would be a sag vehicle driving around, but no people.

My husband is very alarmed at the condition of Portland and is urging me to not race. I am still undecided. I want to race because I got cheated out of my swim at Lonestar. I'm also not going to race again until it's cooler outside, so I'm thinking Sept/Oct is a long time to wait....

I need to think about this for a while.

I drove it as well, the road was in bad shape.  I plan to take easier down that stretch (which is too bad given that where we pick up the tailwind).  I see that OKC maintains their roads as well as Dallas does.   I'm going to go for it, but am planning on playing safe down that stretch - saw some really odd swim times  - I put in 2:00/100m and I am towards the back - one person had 5:00 down as their time - that's super-super fast!

Before EVERY morning workout, granola w/soy milk. Depending on time of said workout, maybe coffee (w/splash of half-and-half) before hand. Depending on length of workout, larger amount of granola.

For me, low blood sugar results in dry heaves. Not good. Must eat before any exercise.

ETA: Even if I'm running at 5am (rarely would I go earlier than that) I eat my usual. It only takes me about 3 minutes, and I can run immediately, don't need to wait around to digest. Oh, and when I saw "bowl," I'm talking a small little pyrex dish that probably maxes out at 1 cup -- so it's a very small bowl. For short/basic runs I'm probably eating about 1/3 cup of granola and soy milk to cover.

Ha...I said the same thing to Steve. Frustrating.

With the temperature extremes in this part of the country, bad roads are to be expected I guess. I just didn't think anyone would throw a triathlon on one Tongue out

Given the small number of people, the course should not be crowded on the bike - if there were 500 people, no way would I do laps down that road, but with 200, everyone will be spread out - at least that's my story

John - a little more on fueling morning runs.  I read an article in RW that mentioned dehydration being a limiter to morning workouts and to drink 8 oz of water 5-10 minutes prior to your run.  I probably go closer to 12-16, but not so much to get that sloshing feeling.

With food, sounds like the common advice is eat something simple - no Denver omlettes or stuffed French Toast, but please grab me a maple bar while you're out.

Done with the 10k.  Will do race report as soon as I am able.  Short version is that it was great fun.  Ran more than half of it with a close friend who I did not know was doing the race (she is the wife of one of the guys I did an Oly with last year), and we just spotted each other at about mile 2.  Pushed hard through the finish (HR 189).  Good times with good company.

Tobey91 - 2010-06-12 11:04 AM Done with the 10k.

But more importantly, did you earn your bragging rights????
