Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN ChrisM - 2013-05-02 2:31 PM To the serious question. Some may know I raced for many years at the 230-ish range. Think I got to 220 maybe for IMAZ 2008. Raced as high as 245. Last season got down to 205. This season down to 185. I am 6'2" and built fairly broad. As a point of reference, I was always much taller than my peers, I was 6' in 6th grade. I know from a medical history form my mom saved (she saves everything) for freshman year hi school I was 176. SO I've always been "the big guy," even if it wasn't fat. Which it ultiamately turned out to be, once I got out of grad school and gained a lot of weight, to at least 275. I am told by various sources, including my PT who is a little more objective than my wife, that this is a good weight for me. It's hard when you've been big.. ok fat... like me and lose a lot of weight, to settle into an equilibrium and be OK with a certain weight, but I am finding my way thru that process. It's so exciting to see a new number on the scale every day, and I wonder "hmmm, well how low could I get?" Have to say it was a thrill to see 179 on the scale after a particularly long and hard ride. Add to this reading stories of guys my height racing at 160 or so. I still instinctively order XL race shirts when registering. It's hard to get out of the mental space of being that guy. In other words, in my head I am still fat. So there has always been a focus on weight with me, but not necessarily in a healthy sense. OK, this was a bit more of a ramble than a discussion of the question, but really just to say I have no frame of reference yet for what is a healthy weight. I bought Racing Weight by Fitzgerald, but haven't yet really read it. I also have to admit to being terrified of goig "back there," which I very easily could do if left to my own (de)vices. We're actually rather close to the same size now as I'm 6'3" and around 180 lbs. I've been down to 175 during the season and have to take my time getting there. As in it had to be over a month, maybe like several, otherwise I'd experience noticeable energy loss. That's where I was cautioning a bit before Oceanside. Several pounds over was better than 1-2 under because the energy loss was that great. I mainly try not to go over 180 as I know I'm healthy & energetic there, and below that, it's just stay healthy. If it helps, do know that there are several pros doing rather well who are about our size in Andy Potts and Jesse Thomas (for starters). Jesse & I look very close. Andy has the same height & weight, but had a really skinny lower body with a massive upper torso sitting on top. I thought he looked a bit cartoonish, definitely has a swim background! A number of others aren't too far off either. And for everyone else, just remember how much more some of us have to carry around even though we are rather lean! I should be packing, obsessing and getting ready to leave this afternoon for knoxville but instead I am currently sitting at the vet right now with a very sick pet. Looks like there is a good chance it is going to spill over into tomorrow at least, so I most likely will not be racing this weekend. Right now plan B is for my wife to head on up (she is racing as well) and then I will fly up tomorrow evening so I can at least watch her race. I am going to contact the race director (once i have an idea what is going on) and my wife will drive all of my stuff up wih her in the off chance they will let me race. But right now it is not looking good for me making it there by the check-in cutoff. Ah, critters! |

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN I officially got the green light to race solo (first rider out) during our team time trial on Sunday. Moving my LR to Saturday, and no taper, but I'm still going to take a crack at an hour. Depending on the winds, I think 255 watts should do the trick. We'll see how the legs feel though. Will ride the course again possibly with a casual team to get in more mileage. |

Two "rollers" that ascend about 30 feet but nothing you need to get out of the big ring for. Most of the time we are exposed to a 15-20 mph wind, but the forecast for this weekend is for much lighter winds in the 7-12 mph range. Could be a fast day, and wouldn't be surprised if some of the stacked teams go close to 52 minutes. It's basically the same course as the State Championship 40k that I'll be doing later in June except the start/finish and turnaround areas are opposite. So it will be good practice. |

Wooooo! Now I don't have to lug the 30lb Thule hard case around. I now have an Evoc. Hopefully this means less airport hassles...lol. http://www.evocsports.com/en/bike/bike-travel-bags/bike-travel-bag.... Sweet, I bought soft shell bike bags for our bikes as well but haven't actually used them yet. Different brand though - Aerus Biospeed. Can't wait to hear how it works out for you. A buddy of mine that lives in NYC uses the aerus case (I am pretty sure that is the brand he has) all of the time and has never been asked once what it is nor has he paid bike fees. That sounds pretty good to someone that travels multiple times a year with a pair of Tri All Three brand hard cases. They are awesome, but you aren't ever going to sneak one by a ticketing agent. We manage to keep high enough medallion status with Delta that they always wave the fees, but in the off-chance we have to fly another airline - ouch. Ya. We're flying down to Kona with US Airways. AKA--worst airline second only to American..so I don't have my hopes up that I will avoid the bike fee. Booooo. We will see though. I get more perks out of my brother's job than my own...lol...His job at the LBS has benefited me in more ways that I can say. Haha. $500 bike bag for $200. Helmets, tri shoes...NBD. Maybe I'll get more perks now too--he just got his UCI Elite rider card and is sponsored by Specialized and the LBS....free bike? Too much to ask for? lol. |

My TSS numbers look too high, with the exception of the bike, which leads me to believe there is a large amount of user error involved. Any suggestions?
What did you use to set your threshold paces ? What is an example of a "number too high", what distance, average pace and your threshold pace ? Marc - here are examples (all happen to be from the same day). Swim: 39min, 87.2TSS, 1.11IF, Pace 1:46/100M - Threshold = 107sec/100M I know that my FTP is likely 5-10watts higher than I have recorded, but it's close enough, and it's the one TSS number I feel is accurate. Which leads me to believe the others are wrong. For the swim I thought I'd understood that Threshold should equal 1000M TT pace. I didn't man up to do one, but based on how I'm swimming, a 1:47 pace seems honest. For the run, I kind of took a flying guess at this one because I was coming off injury when I setup TP and don't have any recent hard run times. The last Sprint race I did in 2012 had me running a 4:07 pace for 7km. I have been surprised by my current paces vs HR, the 4:51 pace was a Z1/2 run, and I didn't feel (minus the endurance and some top speed) that my running is far off where I was at my peak last summer. |

I suspect you are faster than that. I would say 4:18 based on that 7km/4:07 According to your swim paces, you swam 39 minutes below threshold. Personally I have my TP swim threshold about 3 sec faster than what I can hold on a 1500m and it gives me a reasonable TSS. |

But TP strips out the rest time and just seems to use the actual swim time. I don't know if there is a setting that lets me change that. |

Use McMillan to get a 15k equivalent, which is closer to 1 hr, which is threshold The rest gets excluded by TP for swimming. |

Best of luck. Let us know how the little guy/gal does. There you go, a time machine will solve the race issue. Hope all is well with the critter Rusty Aw, now you guys are just being silly - everyone knows the Grandfather Paradox prevents travel back in time, which is what I would need to do to make it to Knoxville in time for check-in (I would do the math for you, but only Marc would get it). Of course I guess if I had access to a Large Hadron Collider I could travel forwards in time to at least find out if I was able to race on Sunday. That would at least let me sleep a little better tonight.... But then there would be two of me in existence on Sunday, and I am not sure the group would tolerate that. Seriously, thanks for the well-wishes on this barely-marginal SBR issue I am dealing with. Okay, well if you're not going to at least try to build a time travel machine... Update on your critter? Hoping for the best -- good outcome for the critter and enough time to get to Knoxville to cheer on your wife....maybe even race! |
