trying1 - 2010-02-26 9:19 AM New Bike alert.  yesterday my lbs called me and gave me a great deal on a demo 2009 felt b12.  I get it/fitted on it on Monday.  It's my first true tri-bike..  Great thing about this is I'm using store credit I already have and I even have some left over credit!  I'm dreaming that it will increase my speed and power by 20%..

you finally got to use the store credit!  and on something very cool too!!!  can't wait to see it!

Tobey91 - 2010-02-26 9:38 AM Spent the past few days in SF, and got some good runs in - including some hill repeats up California Street.  Boy, were those difficult -- my heart rate was holding at 180.  But the run along the waterfront was great too, and I hopped into a group that was keeping 8:10 or so -- which is a great pace.  In fact, it is a pace that I would say is usually above my comfort zone, but I was able to hold with them for 4 miles.  Did not realize how fast we were going until looked at my Garmin later.  Probably a good thing because I would have told myself that I could not hold that.

Unfortunately, limited training opportunities this weekend.  My wife in Texas is taking care of her mother who is very sick, so I have all three kids (aged 5, 4 and 2) solo this weekend.  I may get some unintended aerobic activity in while running after them, but nothing organized.  I am very supportive of my wife taking care of her mother who is absolutely wonderful (and much easier to deal with than my wife's mother-in-law), but I am getting concerned about base building for the FL HIM in May.

come to texas and we can play a better zone D than 1 on 3.  that's funny about your wife's mother-in-law!  sorry to hear about you MIL.

concerns about FL. 70.3  pffffft... there's only one race in FL on your schedule to have possible concerns about.  and there's plenty of time to get over them!  good job out in SF.   but ya better get ready to get an earful from kim for not calling her to go run with you.

soccermom15 - 2010-02-26 10:35 AM OK, so I went to the wetsuit demo last night.  It was put on by a local tri club/multisport store.  There was a rep there from Quintano Roo so that was the only brand they had.  And of course, he only brought the most expensive one they make (he is a salesman after allSmile, but also a triathlete), but he had a lot of good information for those of us that have never worn a wetsuit before.  He didn't go into a lot of detail about why their suits are better than others, just general stuff about why wetsuits are good to wear, how to put them on/take them off, etc., so it was a nice presentation.  After that we all went over to the pool area and he gave us suits to try on.  The first one they gave me to put on, based on my height and weight, was so tight and so short that I couldn't get it up past my knees.  I'm 5'10" so fairly tall for a woman, but the real issue was my leg length.  My inseam is almost 36" so what normally fits a 5'10" woman is usually too short for me.  So they gave me the next size up (I actually ended up with a men's suit) and it was much better.  Still tight, but at least I could get it on!  Once I got in the water and it "adjusted" itself, it actually fit really well - I didn't feel any kind of restriction in my shoulders or through my chest (could breathe just fine).  The only thing I think I'll have to get used to is the neck line.  I'm not used to having something around my neck when I swim and it bothered me a little - not tight, just the feel of something there.  It was a neat experience and I'm glad I went.

Oh, and I also found out that the tri club is planning to do some OWS clincis starting in about a month so I'll be able to get some practice in before my tri in May!

Sounds like the QR rep did a nice presentation...good to hear that he wasn't selling the benefit of his suit...just suits in general.  Did you decide to make a purchase or are you going to shop still?  Will your multisport store let you test any of their suits in a pool before purchasing?  You may not get the same feel out of a lower end suit, even if it is still a QR.  Even if you store won't let you try them in a pool, you could try on a few other brands and price points.  Now that you know what one feels like, you will have a better sense of what might work for you.

that^^^.

X2 on what you will see at your first tri if you have not competed in one yet.

I was amazed as the variety of people and ages. And you know how old everyone is since it is marked on their calf. So I am riding along on the bike and these people 10+ years OLDER than me are zipping by....it was a bit depressing. But, I turned it into a motivation cause I want to be doing what they are doing when I am their age. And the only way I can do that is to keep doing what I am doing now....training, getting stronger, faster, better....and enjoying myself doing it.

I see all the other responses on this already and it is a bit humbling....all of us have a list of 'strikes' against us as to trying to do tri's. But, facing them head on and not letting them take us out of the game is what makes this fun and rewarding. Mountains show up in many different forms while we train and compete. It is our choice as to whether we turn them into mole hills.

Hang in there! The hardest choice you make is taking the first step to do this. You have done that!

from my buffalo springs RR.  i'm 38.  be happy they were ONLY 10 years older.

I got chicked a lot, but that's cool because it was the only scenery out on the course. My favorite person to pass me was the woman who won the 70-74 year old AG. It happened somewhere around mile 35. So I had a 15-30 minute head start on her and she passed me just over the 1/2 point on the bike. Good for her. I think I cheered for her the loudest at the awards dinner when she got her Kona slot.

I would be all over that, I also suggest they swap out the run for a 50K inline skate (Hockey rollers, no brakes!) and everybody gets to carry a stick and block and trap like real hockey.  No interference calls, like old time hockey, I want to see that AG'er pass me NOW!  Keep that "Eurotrash" out of my triathlon!

On another note...the Canadian womens team.  First of all congrats....The beer I understand, but the cigars?  Come on, they are not helping their cause of not liking be referred to as "Chicks with sticks"

Dino

good thing they are not a team of tranny's. different motto then. eh?  wait but then would they play men's or womens?  be bad a$$ if they played both and won gold twice.

no problem with it from me.  unlike something like walking slow to first on a shot or some of the other individualistic crap this seemed to be a team thing.  big difference in my book.

and c'mon.   the IOC should be looking at itself LONG before it looks at something like this.

So I just ran across this:  A guy who had done a bunch of IM events did Kona this past year on a fixed gear bike - i.e. a bike with one gear that is fixed and does not allow you to coast; instead you have to move your feet on the pedals that fast.

Trina:  As everyone on this MG has said, those are absolutely normal questions/reactions to have.  Anyone who denies having them is lying.  Mine come more often during really long workouts when that little voice in my head is telling me that taking a break or quitting would be easier.  I have found that focusing on setting and achieving small goals such as single workouts--or even micro-goals such as keeping up my pace until that big tree up there--helps because once I have achieved that small or micro goal, I am pleased and it gives me strength to move on to the next small or micro goal.  And before you know it, you have become so successful at those small and micro goals that you can tackle the larger goals of the swim, the bike or the run, or even all three put together.

-William

William, sorry to hear about your MIL...

Just want to give you props for running up California Street!  That hill past Kearny up to Nob Hill is KILLER!!!  Very nice.  I used to run along the Embarcadero, too, when I lived in North Beach...I'd sometimes go from there all of the way over the Golden Gate Bridge for long runs.  Ah, glad you were able to get some training in.

We are having a huge rainstorm out here that has winds up to 40-50mph.  I know you guys have been hit by way worse this season, but... I have a 2 hour run tomorrow before work that I am PRAYING I get a window of opportunity to do.  And a 4 hour bike on Monday...please no rain, don't want to do it on the trainer.

Have a terrific weekend, all.

I used to live in S.F. too. The really hilly part is Potrero Hill. Hills so steep I was scared to ride my bike down for fear that if my front wheel turned just a little too much I would go flying over the handlebars.

Crookedest Street in San Francisco: No, it's not Lombard. It's on Potrero Hill, Drive south on Vermont Street from McKinley Park.

GOOD MORNING!!!!!  For those that do not check blogs, here is a picture of my new bike which is still a work in progress. Last night we spent time positioning the aerobars/base bar/pads so Paco could trim them up to better fit me. He found a company that makes a smaller base bar which was a huge find.  Now that we have done that he can string the cable and wrap the bars in white of course!  We decided on LOOK Pedals (buying two sets--the white ones and the Keo Blades and swapping the innards for the new bike) and the model of PT which were the last big decisions to make.  SRAM shifters seem pretty cool.  Wheels are Axcl which is the company who make wheels for Easton.  Apparently it is tough to find many in stock 650s.  I like how they look.  They are a little deeper than my current wheels for the Seven.  Still toying with the idea of race wheels, but may hold off for a while I see how I like these first....
