Mett - 2010-06-15 10:21 AM I need some recommendations for a good playlist while running/biking. I am in to really any type of music.

What tempo?  I have several playlist depending upon what I am trying to focus on  - fast for high tempo / high cadence (95rpm) on the bike, med for most all workouts and slow for long run...  Single best CD that I have for working out to is Goin' South and the platinum edition of same....  Different artists, great songs, decently fast tempo...  I've done dozens of runs to this stuff, also like me some Tom Petty and then all the 80's stuff (I have a couple of compilation multi disc sets) that Iused to go dance clubbin' to back in my mispent youth...

The sound of nature/cars on the bike. It is dangerous to have music on while riding period.

Workout Music:
3 Doors Down - The Champion in Me
Pop Evil - 100 In A 55
Miley Cyrus - The Climb (hey you said anything)
Buckcherry - Crazy B1tch
Disturbed - (Believe, Stricken, Down with the Sickness, 10 Thousands Fists, Into the Fire)
Fort Minor - Remember The Name
Flobots - Handlebars
Hoobastank - Running Away
Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff
Linkin Park - Bleed It Out , What I've Done
Spiderbait - Black Betty
Kanye West - Love Lockdown

Anything 3 Days Grace, 3!oh3, Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Seether, Shinedown

I actually dont listen to much at all working out anymore, I enjoy just getting out and running and listening to my body on the run.

The spot where I ride my bike is in a park w/ miles and miles of trails. I usually just listen to it while there. I def dont listen to it on the road. I am scared enough of getting hit after being hit last year. Thats a cool list, I will work on getting those. I have to have music to keep me going during the bike and run.

jvanis - 2010-06-15 10:37 AM My run has gotten significantly faster, thus far I have been in the low 7s for my 2 races thus far.

By all means - push it!  I sincerely hope you take a podium spot!  And if not then don't let it be because you didn't lay it all out there...

Hah I figured I would get some of that, its a younger group of music that is on my phone right now.  Have a ton on my ipod at home that has all sorts of other music, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Metallica, Sinatra, Classical, Top 40, Techno, I am somewhat of a music junkie.  I would hate to go back and count how many CD's I actually own.  It was a process converting them all to MP3s!

Lol!  I had to throw something random in there to spark some conversation.  A little Cascada - Everytime We Touch, like I said, I have a huge variety of music and I am not ashamed of any of it!

A lot of variety for me too... Mostly I listen to the radio and surf among stations but when I need to dig deep or everyone seems like they're always playing commercials, here is a lot of what is on my mp3 player. Note: I keep about 250 songs loaded at all times, and keep it on Shuffle so I never know what will come up:

Foo Fighters: My be-all, end-all  most favoritest music for taking me to places I didn't realize I could go (Everlong, All My Life, Pretender, Learn to Fly, Monkey Wrench, Cold Day in the Sun, In Your Honor, My Hero, etc. etc. etc. .....)
Old Madonna: The woman is amazing, really good beat for fast running cadence
Rent: So inspiring, although I have to be careful as some of the songs literally move me to tears, even when I'm running
Grateful Dead: Great for long, slow runs
Shins
Keane
Black Crows
Nirvana
Aimee Mann
Bruce Springsteen
Dave Matthews Band
U2 (specifically Vertigo, Fast Cars, and Beautiful Day)
Green Day (although my 10-year-old played American Idiot to death so I almost can't stand it anymore)
Modest Mouse
Jason Mraz
Janis Joplin
Beatles
POTUS
Old R.E.M.

I'm sorta old-school but try to throw in a few newer things. Kings of Leon is a good band for running, too.

I have hear OF a lot of the people you list, I just haven't heard them. I have a LARGE CD collection and well over 9000 songs on my big iPod last I looked. It is just that I find only a handful of new groups to listen to each year. The last one was Kings of Leon, and before that Duffy. I much prefer classic rock. I own only one Rap CD (Eminem's best). No disco, no metal, and none of the present crop of teen girl singers. M'eh.

Beatles, Who, Van Morrison: I have just about all of it. I also have almost everything by Dave Edmunds, Graham Parker, Ian Hunter, and a lot of other less than A-list musicians.

Whatever floats your boat musically It is such an individual thing.

And, Andy is right, I will turn 50 next year so I am an old-fart (officially then).

I also have tons of music, my favorite genre is blues and for most of it I just cant workout to it. I listen to anything but country these days. I use to enjoy country but just got tired of the slow music and the fact that the stations play the same 15 songs over and over. Sucks as I use to be in a country band and we made it pretty big in Columbus with our last show opening up for Ronnie Milsap.

Subject: RE: swbkrun Mentor Group- CLOSED FOR BUSINESS!!!
jvanis - 2010-06-15 11:12 AM I am going to take a moment and communicate goals for my next race on the 27th.  I seem to do better when I let my goals be known.

Background: Did this as my second race last year and learned a lot.  The swim, big chop along the lines of 2.5 ft white caps.  Certified USAT course, so I know distances are accurate.  The swim got cut to 1/4 mile for AG'rs, it was a whole new experience for me.  There were 20 MPH winds in our face as we went out, which happens to be where all the climbs are, and its pretty hilly.  The way back in was nice to cruise.  The run was quite warm, borderline hot with a lot of up and down, very few flats.

14 Jeff Vanis Apple Valley MN 26 M 11 9:15 2:06 2:41 16 1:07:13 17.9 0:50 17 37:49 9:28 1:57:45

So my goals for this year:
Swim (1/2 mile):  15 minute swim, yes it only puts me at 1:50/100, but I am planning for chop, I have never been on the lake when it wasn't fairly rough.

<1:30 T1

Bike(20 Miles): 21 MPH average(57:08), but more concerned that my power comes out to 240.  I am going to push hard on the bike, and if my run suffers, then it will be what it is, but it will give me a better estimate of what I can race.

<1:00 T2

Run(4 Miles): 7:15/mile = 29 minutes total

Overall: 1:43:38 (With ideals going below 1:40)

Hope to make this a race I can hit the podium on, then again it all depends who shows up that day, but I needed to talk through numbers and communicate it out.  After getting through the MS150 this weekend, I think I cleared a mental hurdle that should help in racing and being able to push a bit harder.

Thanks for listening to me ramble off my goals!

Jeff, those sound like great goals. I hope you achieve them!

It sounds like a pretty tough course - is local enough that you can spend some time on the course and get to know the conditions better?

I am looking for something that incorporates the swim, bike, run in to a large part of my arm up by my shoulder. I am looking at the m dot in a couple years after I do a half or full ironman.

I vaguely remember something about turning 30. If I recall correctly it didn't hurt at all. Just wait until your kids start telling you that you are older than dirt Now that's getting up there.

Hoping to prolong my youth with this whole triathlon thing. I am confident if I stay at it I can be faster then high school. At least that is the long long term goal. I know I cant maintain it but the best mile I ever ran was a 5:45. I know its a long shot but I think I can do it again, even if it is just one mile one time.
