Anyone else doing the Oly?

Also, I highly recommend looking into a bigger cassette for Knoxville if you are running an 11-23 or 11-25, I'm going to try to grab an 11-28 for that race.  Hills aren't super steep but long, helps to have some gears to spin in.

Doug---YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I haven't registered yet, but I did get a reservation at the Sheraton Four Point.

George/Tracy--I have tried ultrasound for PF and a few things with no results. Of course the topical treatment they use is made somewhat less effective by my epilepsy drugs so I'm probably not a great test market.  Prolo is the only thing that seems to work for me.

Linda/Chet--really sorry about Boston.  I still cannot believe it closed so fast.  Like Sam says in the two years I signed up for it there were months to get it done. BUMMER.

Kyla--if you do any other race besides LV, a few of us might be irked...

Tony--hills??? bigger than WI???  I used a 12-27 for MOO and it seemed to work great!!

The news of the day at the Shain household is the arrival of Cooper.  I pick him up today at 3pm!!  Other minor news, I am so sore from lifting after not having done it since April, swimming was a challenge.....

Still undecided between the Oly or the 1/2 at Rev3.  Now I am working with my sister on dates for my Godson's first communion to ensure that I don't get trumped by family obligations.  However, I am leaning towards the 1/2 right now just because.  I have a room booked at the Hilton for Saturday night. (best rate and Honors member)(

Sorry to all the Boston Peeps.....that sucks.  Nothing else, it just sucks! Cry

Suzy....Great name.  They used to make great Hockey Gear! (Don't even know if they are in business anymore?  Maybe a little help from our Canuck friends here....?)  We expect more pictures when he gets home!

On a training note....Endurance Nation out-season is kicking my A$$.  I thought I was in decent shape, well, has become obvious that I thought wrong  ..... back to see "the Mistress" for more LT work later today!

From what I remember there were some shorter steeper climbs around the campus, then when you get out in the country there is a hill/mountain you go up that continues for quite a bit, not overly steep but I think with my 11-23 I was in the bottom gear the entire time.

11-27 should be good but I might not go any lower than that.

Only Hartford and Philly could pull those off!  The guys must have loved management for making them wear those for a couple of years!  Fortunately, a little before my time.

Looks like we have at least 3 heel strikers in this group.

I suppose I could save this for the Wednesday question, but what the heck...who is wearing more minimalist shoes? which ones? thumbs up/down? why you doing it?

LOL, yeah first - third it looks like.

I wear the saucony a4's.  Love them, I wear them for all my runs and no issues, so far up to about 15 miles.

I am - Zoot Sports Ultra TT 2.0.  I love them.  I started w/ them to race with for short tri distances (Sprint/Oly) in order to have faster transition times.  Now I run in them all the time and did my last HIM in them.  They feel light, create fewer callouses on my big toes (I have a slight overpronation) and they are pretty.  :-)

Only problem - the design is 2 years old so I need to find a new shoe. 3.0 might work but they are so expensive.

You know I am.  It's been about 3-4 weeks now since I got my Saucony Kinvara's.  Was very worried at the beginning because I felt some calf tightness, but with the slow build up (about 15-18 mpw split up into 4 runs), I am loving them.  No more tight calves...

The issue with the shoes wearing out quickly (Tony mentioned it), I think is true.  After only 45 miles in these shoes, there is some wear on the outer portion of the front "lugs".  Happily though, my heels are not wearing down in the same spot that they normally do, which I take as a sign that I have started to really land more on the mid-foot.  Lots less soreness than I normally experience after running, but again, much lower mileage than I had been doing.  We'll see what happens once we get into marathon training.

Welcome to Cooperstown!

If anyone else is picking up the tab for flight, hotel, childcare, and potential  marital therapy, I'M THERE!!! In all seriousness, I am 95% sure I'm going to do the Seattle Half, which is the previous weekend. No flight. No hotel. No childcare (my 14 houseguests can watch my kids, not to mention my very capable husband [the houseguests can watch him too!!]!). No marital therapy. And that's all I'm potentially committed to for now (and I haven't even bought my entry to that yet!).

Cooper says hi!

It took him a whole two seconds to piddle on me when I took him out of his crate from the car and about 2 more minutes to decide chewing his bone was a good idea....wonder how he will like being crate alone for the night?  Can't wait for Paul to meet him.

Re: the shoes, it would be interesting to compare wear patterns.  I've run about 20 miles in the Newton Guidance road shoes and already see slight wear patterns on the outter edge by the lugs....same for both sides.

Such a cute little fur ball!

No minimalist shoes here, but the more I run the less I heel strike because my legs are too tired to overstride Wink. I've also been doing lots of trail running, and I think that's retrained me to a shorter stride. I still heel strike on faster runs, but for regular easy runs I'm striking mid-foot these days. I think. I should pay more attention.

hehe piddle...

My A4's seem to still be going strong around 200 miles so far, though they stink badly since I don't wear socks.

Is your plan to wear them at every distance Suzy?  My coach and I had that conversation, he is of the belief that you should be able to wear them at any distance race.  As I said earlier I plan to run in them for every race but will obviously change if I start to develop any real pain as I go longer than 15 or so miles.

Actually the only thing I don't like about these shoes is they have holes in the bottom I guess to let out water only problem is small pebbles and seeds get stuck in them and I have to pull them out every so often.  This weekend on my long run was the first time I ever had one suck so far in the holes it was poking through the inside of the shoe, I had to sit down on the side of the trail for 5 minutes to pry out the rock.

No minimalist for me but tomorrow Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, Director of Freedom Run, physician and WVU professor will be speaking to my Tri Club about minimalist running options.  He has done a lot of medical studies on this and I am excited to hear him speak about this topic.

Ooooh, please come back and tell us all about that, Linda!

No minimalist here either, although last shoe-buy-go-around I did pick up a pair of shoes with less support, but they are only for short and/or tempo runs (Brooks Launch). So far they are comfy. A year or two ago I tried to change to more of a mid-foot strike, and it seems I was successful as every time I go to buy shoes my shoes are worn most heavily in the front  (ball area) as opposed to the back! I'm in no hurry to change up shoes -- if it ain't broke... I am trying some different brands/styles, but partly that's because I'm starting to feel like my "long run" shoes are super stiff and "stompy." I'm sure it's just me who is stiff and stompy, but still...

Good question.  I am wearing the two most stable Newton's--the guidance trainer road & the guidance trainer trail shoe--there is a midpost and while the heel is significantly less than my Brooks it is not non-existent.  I ordered a pair of the Kinvara's and got them yesterday.  They are way too narrow, but I also feel they are not enough shoe for me either.  Both you and Kim are running in far less than I am.  While your sole is basically flat, mine has protruding lugs that help encourage you to mid foot plant behind them.  It's too early to tell whether I will wear them permanently.  I still feel a bit clunky, but it's only been two weeks.

Paul had this brilliant idea we should put a towel down on the floor so Cooper could play with his toy on it versus our good rug....he promptly decided it was newspaper and peed on it.  We have a lot to learn
