Sorry! rrrunner - 2012-12-28 1:36 PM cdban66 - 2012-12-28 11:24 AM TJ, I've heard better stuff about HITS recently, if that matters. They'll be over here in January, I'll keep an ear open for reviews. I've been watching the RR's with interest. It seems most are positive as of late. Most of the complaints now are that it is an underpopulated, and lonely course because HITS hasn't caught on yet. If I sign up by Jan 18th the OLY is only $50 and the half is $75!!!!!!!! Personally, I'd feel comfortable doing a HITS event. I would plan to be on the BYO nutrition plan though. |

Beautiful winter weather! I have so much to fill in and set up on my log page, but I've been corralled into building Star Wars Legos. After kids asleep, it seems. Way to get out there! This time of year, you have to take advantage of it when it's nice out! |

I just realized that HITS is doing a race weekend in Loma Colorado the weekend of May 18!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the same venue where I did my frigid OLY in October this year!!!!!!!!!!! I've been wanting to do a HITS race and I like the venue but this presents SO many questions. It is 7 weeks after my HIM. Do another HIM? Drop down to OLY? Orrrrr, since the HIM is a training race in the Fink plan go on to the IM . Really hadn't planned on going to IM ever this year. Orrrr, wait and do Lake Havasu in November. The prices are incredible if I make a decision by Jan 18th. I know, I know, "dooooo eeeeet". But WHICH ONE?! If you did both as HIM, which would be your A race? Also, know that your your first HIM, you may need more recovery. You are asking your body to do something that it is new to it. Doing your first two seven weeks apart may be more of an issue than doing, say, your fifth and sixth HIM seven weeks apart. Does that make sense? Oceanside is def my A race, because I'm doing it for Ashley and that is where my training is pointing (and because it cost 4X as much as HITS). I like the idea of signing up for the HIM and switching to the OLY if needed. I will def BYO nutrition wise and maybe hydration too. My SIL reminded me that the next weekend is the Bolder Boulder (10k). Possible to do both and just make it a Colorado vacation. We have graduations to attend up there that week anyway. |

Master 1970 Somewhere on the Tennessee River | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! There a few extra characters in your link. If the events are broken into parts during the day and include rest periods I would say go for it. We have a local long distance camp that does it that way. It' starts on a Friday afternoon and then ends on Sunday evening. I've yet to do it but am seriously thinking about doing it this summer. It's in July and our summers can be brutal. 100 degrees F. are common.
With the rest period I'd say no problem. Edited by MadMathemagician 2012-12-28 5:45 PM |

Will Llanelli your first tri Since you are asking, I would suggest the July Long Course Weekend events be one of the shorter options (70 or 42 on the bike and half marathon on the run) in 2013 and increase the distance for 2014. Also, instead of going sprint, sprint, long course weekend, Oly, would it be possible to do an Olympic distance event before the long course weekend or is there simply not one in your area in that timeframe? |

The reason I'm doing sprint, sprint to start is because the sprint on the 15th of June was the original tri that I was aiming to do. It's also the one I have persuaded my bro in law to do, so it has to stay as for the long weekend course, I have only just realised that I can book the events individually, and also they offer half distance for each event also. Only 5 pound cheaper for doing 70.3 instead. I'm a tight ars** Welsh man, so it grips me to pay almost the same for half the distance lol. But maybe it would be a good idea to hold off on that event at the moment and decide in the next month or two, just to see how I'm progressing. |

Not seeing any identifiable pattern in terms of pace and distance in your running from the last couple months, other than regular runs of between 30min to 1:45ish. (Mostly under an hour) If I were to rewind back to the last two weeks, look forward and give you advice for taper, it would be this: keep doing what you're doing. In the last week, do slightly less (80%ish) than what you've been doing but all at race pace. Just as a general note, tapers are very dependent on the individual athlete, training history, goals and particular race. Overall training load (which is intensity and volume) as well as the individual components (intensity and volume) all need to be adjusted, as well as duration of taper. For triathlon, ideally, you'd actually taper the three sports somewhat differently depending on the factors above for each individual sport. Thank you Yanti... I am a #'s guy so you spoke in a language I can understand.
I agree with this. Then I say for your next half (aren't you doing the Sammamish half with me in Feb?) work on your consistency. Get out as often as you can (I know you have a busy schedule) and shake it up with a variety of distances. Yep - I am, but this race is in March - do you know something I don't know? If we meet up at race start, you will officially be the first person I have met in real life from BT. When you say shake it up with a variety of distances, can you give me an example of what a 35 mile week would look like - including tempo / fartlek / race pace / LSD etc...? About 3 weeks ago, I hit my top week ever (34 miles) and want to build from there after my race. In looking back, I see that I ran 5,13,5,5,5 that week.... The next week I ran 3,5,8,5,8 for a total of 30 miles (I intentionally scaled back a bit.). Not a lot of variety there. I do almost all my runs at approximately the same pace (mostly low 8's, sometimes 8:25ish). The only thing I want to add is that these runs are all on the same trail, and the trail has rolling hills. I try to negative split most my runs, and usually do....so when I say that I keep the same pace, I actually work harder up hill than I do down hill. What I've been doing has helped me drop over 1:00 off my average pace in about a year, but since I don't do speed work (I've never had anyone show me how) - I don't feel I'm reaching my full potential, something I want to do very badly. I'm happy with where I have come so far, considering I am a self taught runner that couldn't run 1 mile on a treadmill 16 months ago, but I really want to reach my potential. All advice is greatly appreciated. |

I'm happy with where I have come so far, considering I am a self taught runner that couldn't run 1 mile on a treadmill 16 months ago, but I really want to reach my potential. All advice is greatly appreciated. That's pretty awesome. Wish I had advice, but all this is new to me. So I'll just say WOOHOO...til I figure it out some more |

Master 2770 Central Kansas | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! MadMathemagician - 2012-12-28 6:21 PM This looks awesome. How much does something like this cost?Richardsdrr - 2012-12-28 6:17 PM Hi Janyne. Thanks for the input.

Master 1970 Somewhere on the Tennessee River | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Last year the price of the Gunterville Long Distance Camp was $150. It should be the same or near the same this year, assuming they have it again. I'll have to check. |

I want to get into the habit of getting up to run before I get ready for work, but my hurdles are: 1) I am a night owl by nature 2) I have a really nice, soft, warm bed in which my 2 snuggly dogs love to lay next to me 3) I typically like 'easing' into my day. It's very tough as I'm laying there with 2 warm, fuzzy bodies to make myself get up and run in the cold and dark. Now if it's evening and it's cold and dark, no problem, I'm out the door without hesitation (usually). How can I pry myself out of bed and into the cold? Well, I am really the wrong person to be commenting I agree with DubSix--try a few minutes earlier. The harder the change, the smaller steps to break it up into. Definitely leave running gear literally next to bed so you can just fall into them. I like the mind trick of telling myself I'm just going to put the clothes on and then if I want to I can get back into bed. Can the dogs come? Is it possible to arrange to meet someone? Every time you get up early (whether a run is included or not), put some change/cookie/give yourself a cookie crumb into or from a jar. A little reward, whatever it may be. A buck toward more running gear Then you'll feel guilty if you don't use the gear go buy yourself some lights to decorate yourself with? A reflective hat? I've been thinking about doing this on swim mornings. I have no trouble with the 5:30 alarm when i'm getting on the drainer, but going out in to the cold to drive to a cold pool is hard to motivate some (most) days. I was thinking I'd give myself a Bux stop if I do all 3 masters swims in a week but that seems to be too long term for my weak motivator. Might try every time, or just the really difficult mornings for a while. Another option is the stick rather than the carrot. If you DON'T get to the pool, then no Bux that day. Or is that too extreme? ETA: I read that after I posted and thought it might be crazy talk. I used to put my alarm clock on the other side of the room so that I had to get out of bed to turn it off. Most of the time this worked. Another idea is to sleep in your workout clothes, the crumpled look can be a real fashion statement. This works best for a morning swim because then you dont have to get naked in the cold in the morning, which is only fun if you have someone to do it with

Off to the vet this morning to get one of our dogs "knocked up" so my long ride will get done on the trainer later as it is 105 in the shade here today. Scheduled for 65minutes so my goal is to break the 25km mark which will be a first for me. |

Master 3870 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! After park ride with kids, I put in 12 miles on bike at gym and a really slow 900 meters in pool. Lots of 50m pausing after not being in pool for almost 3 weeks. I had been getting more comfortable in the water, so I feel like I'm back a couple steps. But I'm certainly not as bad off as I was when I started 3 months ago.

haha! Getting naked and cold is not fun...even with someone to do it with. Naked and warm is sooo much better. Probably why I burrow under my covers early in the morning. Sadly, I see my warm and comfy bed being exchanged for frosty and dark roads in the near future. I have to make some sacrifices to get more running in |

Expert 1452 Troy, MI | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! HOLY CRAP!!!!! I go away from the internet for 1 week to play with the grandbabies, have a little thing called Christmas, go up north for a fantasy wedding, and you guys go from page 4 to 22. I got up to page 7 and had to skip to the end. Could someone just give me the clif notes version of the remaining 15 pages? I did see that Tom (ponderingfox) is doing Hawk I Tri in June. I just want to say that is my FAVORITE tri. It holds a special place in my heart because I lost my tri-virginity there in 2008. How is everyone doing with their jogo minutes? I have been a very bad girl. I haven't been tracking anything but in my defense, I have an 11 month old, 2 and 6 year old visiting from New Mexico and it is all I can do to keep up with the balls of energy and have not made an attempt to get out and train. I just want to spend time playing. Out of all the fun toys that the g-babies got for Christmas, their favorite is my big exercise ball that I sit on at my computer, so I can't visit very often because my "chair" is always missing. I have had them rolling and doing crunches and v-leg lifts with the ball. They are getting into shape, even if I am not. Has anyone talked about resolutions/commitments yet? Its getting to be that time of year to put the jogo December challenge to rest and start talking about what commitments we are making to ourselves. I am doing a "Commitment Day" 5k at Ford Field in Detroit on Jan. 1. I have to figure out what I want to commit to for a healthy lifestyle. |
