Member 10 Raleigh | Subject: RE: Deanna Babcock - Thoughts and Prayers Deanna--- You don't know me, but we share the same coach. I also came to visit you in the hosp. when you were in your "coma". I was there the day you opened your eyes to pet the funny little dog. Do you remember? LOL!!! Anyway, I just want you to know that the A.E. Finley YMCA is racing Duke 1/2 in your honor this SUnday. You are such an inspiration to us all. I hope that maybe you, me and D can go to lunch soon. Margo Pitts |

Since we're all athletes and we log progress in hours, minutes, and seconds, I thought a quantitative summary of my hospital stay would be appropriate.
1,324,498: times nurses ripped tape/tegaderm/electrodes off my body 1,759: times my oxygen saturation, pulse, and blood pressure were taken 400: approximate distance in feet I can cover on crutches without falling/becoming fatigued 55: length in days of my total hospital stay 35: pounds of weight I lost, including a missing leg 14: holes in my body that were not meant to be holes 10: doctors I had throughout my stay 7: number of surgeries I had 5: weeks I was in a coma 4: times I was cognitively evaluated and found to be completely normal 3: good meals consisting of hospital food, or approximately 5% rate of edibility 2: times I went missing and caused my nurses to make phone calls to find me 1: time I was called a smart a$$ by my therapist, random 3:30am Jamaican sponge bath, leg I now have GOING HOME...PRICELESS!! Congrats. Please continue to update!!

So I leave with a pretty sweet gold prosthetic leg; I've yet to figure out how to use it. My primary form of mobility will be wheelchairing, supplemented with crutching as my balance improves. I intend to go back to school this semester on research and independent study credits. I told one of my co-workers that I would race him (and beat him) at the White Lake half ironman in early May, so I better figure out how to run and bike ride by February or so. We'll see how that goes. I'll probably start small with a plain 5k race and go from there.
Again, thanks for the support and encouragement.
Deanna Just a note....you will be an inspiration to lots of xc kids. Blessing kiddo. Be strong!! Thank you for allowing us to get a glimpse of all that you are going through.

Veteran 159 NC | Subject: RE: Deanna Babcock - Thoughts and Prayers Ha, unless you've spent at least three weeks in the hospital, you've no idea how good it is to be out. It was two weeks yesterday that I've been out, and also my mom's birthday, and also the day that I moved into a new apartment, and also the day that I got a caramel sunday at dairy queen. It was a good day. I'm getting better at standing on one foot and walking with my new leg. Tuesday I learned how to put one foot in front of the other instead of putting one foot next to the other, so I nearly doubled my speed. My top speed now rivals that of a grandma going to bingo instead of a grandma on a casual jaunt. I went to the beach last weekend and went swimming in a pool. My dad, who was not there, asked if I could swim straight. I said no, that I could only swim in circles like a one-legged duck. I was fibbing, though, because I'm still a good swimmer. The roads of Raleigh are no longer safe, as I recently procured an automatic car and relieved my mom of driving duties. So far I've only hit two pedestrians and side-swiped three other cars. This might also be a fib, but if you live in Raleigh, I would stay off the roads for a while. Anyway, I'm doing way better. For now I'll keep swimming in circles. Happy training. D |
