dalessit - 2010-03-02 7:57 PM So does this strike anyone else as odd.

Got this today for a Sprint that Sam and I are doing next month.  Granted it's 300M in a pool but still.

====
A couple hints to guide you with your swim time:

00:45-01:20:  Super Fast (In contention to win the race and you swim competitively)
01:21-01:30:  Fast Enough (still starting in the first 1/3 of the event)
01:31-01:50:  Average Swimmer (Swim well enough and don't need to stop at the end of each lane line)
01:51-02:10:  Novice (Still getting used to this thing called triathlon)
2:11 and UP:  Complete Beginner/I want to start at the back

they are really trying to confuse people. the race site has different seeding times than your email.  looks like the added 5 seconds for yd to meter conversion.  but shouldn't that be closer to 8 seconds.   all inall though i don't think those are that bad.

00:50 - 01:15:   Super Fast (In contention to win the race and you swim competitively)
01:16 - 01:40:  Fast Enough (still starting in the first 1/3 of the event)
01:41 -02:00:  Average Swimmer (Swim well enough and don't need to stop at the end of each lane
02:00 - 02:30: Novice (Still getting used to this thing called triathlon)

02:31 and up: Complete beginner/I want to start at the back

and i did notice from the results from last year its clear to me that the guy that won the swim overall screwed it up for everyone.  someone by the name of marty gaal from cary, nc.  pppfffft.    ;-)

I think your numbers make a lot more sense.  LOL, I had put 1:37/100 which I am pretty sure I can't hit but was my normal over-seeding where I tend to swim as I need with no one passing and me not having to pass many.

So now I need to re-evaluate my entered swim time to make sure I can get in that same spot.

What?! Are those times to swim a 300M, or a 100M? Geez! I can't imagine someone swimming 300M in 45 seconds!!

Well, I had my first official bonk today. Went to the gym to run a 5K on the treadmill. Got to 2.1 miles and thought I was going to pass-out. Had zero energy left so had to stop. What gives?

Training question: I have my first tri coming up this weekend. The swim is only 300 yards - no big deal. Only problem is, is that it takes me about 300 yards before I'm good and loosened-up/warmed-up. The first 100 yards of all my swims I'm very tight (which translates into slow). Anyone have any suggestions on how to beat the beginning swim tightness?

Those are per 100.  lol if you swam the :45/100 you would be doing a 2:25 300M swim.

Bonks happen.  I always take a gel/bar with me just in case.

Some races I have done they let you in the pool for a quick warmup, others they don't

In that case, pretty much all you can do is go for a short run to get your heart rate up.

Good luck this weekend, can't wait to read the race report.

Yeah...if you can't swim to warm up, a short run or a spin on a bike is the way to go.

GOOD LUCK!!

Even he only did 1:10/100's then the next fastest person did 1:20/100's

My 1:37 gets me 47th out of 250ish men so inside the top 1/4

Not sure why I am harping on this but those times they posted are so ridiculous.

All that. Make sure you get there plenty early, so you have time to set everything up (and grab the best bike if it's indoors -- i.e. fan position, good feel on the cadence, whatever... I have favorite bikes at my Y for sure). Once you are 100% ready to go, still make sure there is plenty of time and beg to get in and warm up. If not, jog or spin, and do big circles with your arms and just swim in the air. It won't hurt and might get some blood into the shoulders. I've been thinking the same thing for my IM swim... It takes me about 700 yards to feel decently warmed up. But heck if I wanna do anymore than asked of me come race day, LOL!

Any bike geeks want to comment on some rides? I've been on one of these and plan to ride the other two this week. I know there are fairly differences when it comes to the components, but less so on the frames (i.e. all are carbon, although I don't quite understand the Specialized FACT technology but am reading more about it). I know fit is huge. I know one of these is more high-mid-range, and one is more entry-level range. All are currently within $400 of one another based on quoted LBS prices. One I have an opportunity to purchase with a sponsorship deal, but limited availability from our sponsor store means October delivery, so I took that price as a starting budget to see what was out there to try. Of course I've now stepped out of said budget, but might be able to swing a purchase. Anyway, just curious on any comments.

2007 Scott Contessa Plasma (52)
2010 Specialized Transition Comp (SM)
2010 Felt B16 (51)

I won't say which I've ridden, but suffice it to say I fell in love. Can post links if you want 'em...

I'm going ot take a me day and stay home. Maybe jump on the bike this afternoon in front of the TV. Later all. have a great one.

Oh yeah. Doug totally awesome swim times. How the heck do you go so fast? Are you sure you're not measuring distance in feet LOL

How tall are you?  LOL all those have a higher stack than my bike.

Just to confuse things I'll throw out a bunch of numbers.

Also are you sure on the Felt size?  I don't see a 51 anywhere, only even numbers.

The Felt and Specialized both come with 105, so components are a wash.

The 2010 contessa plasma comes with ultegra, but not sure on the 2007

There is a bit of difference between the 52 Felt and the 52 Specialized  fit wise.

Specialized stack and reach - 505 380

Felt 50 Stack and reach - 485 390
Felt 52 Stack and reach - 500 405

Meaning the Felt is taller and shorter reach where the felt is shorter with a longer reach.

Get there early and get set up, then try and get in the pool.   In the pool don't swim too much or too fast to burn yourself out, just enough to warm up.  Stretch it out long and strong.  If you can't get in the pool (I would be suprised if they don't let you in) then do some really good stretching and a little jogging.  Good luck

Tony -- I'm 5'6". And yeah, just double-checked my notes and it was a 51 Cervelo that the LBS had, but a 52 Felt. And yes, the 2007 Contessa Plasma is Ultegra. Thanks for the feedback thus far. How tall are you?

What I really really should do is go to my bite fitter (a PT, so not in a shop) -- when I got my road bike he pretty much determined that given my build and background (swim/run) that I needed a specific top tube length. We picked out a few models of bikes that had the right one, I seached high and low to find them and try them, rode 'em and bought one and have always loved my road bike. It was nice that he took all the guesswork out of it, really!! I'll call him today to see how soon I can get an appt.

Felt 50 Stack and reach - 485 390
Felt 52 Stack and reach - 500 405

Meaning the Felt is taller and shorter reach where the felt is shorter with a longer reach.

I'm 5'8 with a 30" inseam.

Yeah look at the reach number then that's from Bottom Bracket to the top of the head tube (draw an invisible line up from the BB to be even with top tube then measure across)

Hey guys - just checking in.  Not much to say - things have been just moving along for me, which is good.  My swimming is getting better (although this morning was a little rough - I couldn't seem to catch my breath for some reason), the running is going great, and the biking, well, it's thereSmile.  I still can't really say that I enjoy that particular part of my training.  I know part of it is from being on a stationary bike at the gym (no trainer and no plans to get one anytime soon).  But this weekend's weather is supposed to be very spring-like so I'm hoping to get the real bike out for a ride.  I've got about 5-1/2 weeks until my half marathon and after that, I'll be concentrating more on the bike.

BTW - here's my February numbers
February's totals:
Bike:5h 35m  - 93.11 Mi
Run:14h 39m 24s  - 70.97 Mi
Swim:4h 39m  - 7600 M
Pilates:5h 00m

About what I expected for the swim and run.  Bike, like I said before, needs some workSmile.

Well, today is Wednesday, so it must be time to start thinking about the weekend!  Who is racing???  some details might be nice....

For the rest of us, it is getting close to the end of the off season, tell us the #1 thing you have learned since your last triathlon! Be honest....it will help us all.

I'll start the ball rolling. My biggest learning is if you don't keep SBR in perspective, it won't be fun.  I have told a few of you that I thought the off season was getting to be a total grind (yes John and George even with two vacations).  I have come to realize that pounding out big volume in the name of only faster times might be good for little charts and graphs, but not so good for my soul. I don't need to have amazing gains every day to make me feel good about the sport or how I am progressing as an athlete. I need to remind myself of that more or I work harder only to be fatigued.

So what does it mean?  I am going to spend a whole lot less time worrying about how I stack up performancewise day to day and a whole lot more time getting back to the fun I was seeking when I moved from straight marathons to triathlon.

There I said it.....Suzy

I have been a quiet lurker for a few days, so I will chime in.  No races this weekend, but looking at the weather forecast (Sunny high 40's for the weekend) I hope to be able to HTFU and get my actual bike outside, to ride outside, yes, outside, on a street, not sitting still on a trainer or rollers, yes really, outside....Oh my what will I do......I might crash cause I have forgot how to steer!  Lets hope the weather guy is right for a change.

#1 thing I learned this offseason.  Swimming is all about staying relaxed and staying long.  I have found my split times will remain the same or be faster the more I relax and the more I reach when swimming.  Oh, and ITBS sucks and you want to do everything you can do to avoid it.  (It will make you hate the foam roller like nothing you have hated before in your life!)  There are lots of drills, stretches, etc. and they are worth the extra time before you run....believe me!

Good luck to all the racers this weekend!

good luck racers!

no race for me.

biggest thing is if you don't pay attention to the OFF in OFFseason ya might get a little burned out.  then some of the fun goes away.  i don't like that one bit.  its not why i started doing this.

second thing, ha!  maybe i should have registered for the OLY at lone star, not the HIM.

thankfully i'm starting to come off it!   ONWARD!!!!

also some of you already know but it looks like we might be on the move to the atlanta area.  no exact time frame but jack starts kindergarten this year so hopefully i'll be drinking beer there by july.  good stuff.  texas has been great to us but with the kiddos its time to get back closer to family.  anyone need a geographer in area???

talked to Steve (Reno8) for a while today.  he's in one of the town's we're looking at.  always very cool to put a voice with an avatar.  thanks for all the yapping time steve!  an extra 2 weeks healing time on that shoulder ain't sh+t in the grand scheme of things.

hope everyone is having an awesome day!
