SSMinnow - 2010-03-03 12:09 PM I'll start the ball rolling. My biggest learning is if you don't keep SBR in perspective, it won't be fun.  I have told a few of you that I thought the off season was getting to be a total grind (yes John and George even with two vacations).  I have come to realize that pounding out big volume in the name of only faster times might be good for little charts and graphs, but not so good for my soul. I don't need to have amazing gains every day to make me feel good about the sport or how I am progressing as an athlete. I need to remind myself of that more or I work harder only to be fatigued.

So what does it mean?  I am going to spend a whole lot less time worrying about how I stack up performancewise day to day and a whole lot more time getting back to the fun I was seeking when I moved from straight marathons to triathlon.

There I said it.....Suzy

This is a really good learning and something that I plan to keep in mind.  (Although your light weeks are pretty huge in volume to me!)

I can see myself doing what you describe above.  Especially the 2 vacations part Cool

Biggest thing I have learned since my last race is that T.I.T.S is not the best way to get faster on the bike.

Quality focused workouts are the way to go with rides.  I pretty much blew off the "other" rides in the past and focused on getting out for a few hours at a time in the past.

Went for a ride last weekend after being on the trainer pretty much for 2 months straight and had a ton more energy and power during the ride.

au contraire.  me thinks there are many applications where T.I.T.S are very useful.

On that topic, I was a cycling coach who works with the RadioShack Team and also works for Saris.  She told me she has her athletes on the PT or CT all winter because the workouts can be so exact and fine tuned easier than riding outside.  She has her top athletes indoors twice a week even in fab weather.....I am anxious to see how I feel outside at Lonestar after CT'ing it with very specific workouts all winter.

Hey John, I hear you on the Oly....I could probably do the whole thing that way....hmmmm....Undecided

SSMinnow - 2010-03-03 12:02 PM Well, today is Wednesday, so it must be time to start thinking about the weekend!  Who is racing???  some details might be nice....

For the rest of us, it is getting close to the end of the off season, tell us the #1 thing you have learned since your last triathlon! Be honest....it will help us all.

No racing for me...still snow on the ground so I will be skiing.

Learnings for me since last race -
I am pretty good at pushing myself on the swim and the run, but not so much on the bike.  It is easy for me to get on the bike and do a consistent easy/moderate pace but difficult to push myself to do a tougher high intensity ride.  Not sure why but I think this will show up in my upcoming season in terms of year over year improvement.

And also...I really like sbr and the challenge that it gives me and the motivation it gives me to stay in shape!!

No races for me this weekend.

The #1 thing I've learned this offseason is that I didn't know how to swim, run or bike.  LOL  Although I knew some of that beforehand.  But seriously, since Tony and I got a coach who is fantastic although a bit email challenged at times, I've learned so much in a short period of time.  The workouts have been so dialed in for me and my physical abilities.  And even if I don't see immediate improvement on the race course, I feel that I will continue to make steady progress this year and get the most of my ability.

No races here. Can't say I learned anything in this off-season specifically -- need to think on that some more. But one thing I do try to do in the off-season is cut myself some slack. If I don't feel like doing something, that's OK. I use this particularly for early-morning workouts. I figure later on I won't have the option to sleep in, so take it when I can get it!! I also try to get into lots more variety of workouts, and fun workouts with friends who aren't necessarily triathletes. There are classes at my Y that I enjoy, or I like to take a friend's outdoor boot camp class. I try to add in the social element more, because when I get into a plan or a goal I just buckle down and do what needs to be done.

What I've learned in the off season.....hum?   Considering I DNF my last race I'd say I've learned alot about my body and my psychy (sp?) since my last race.  I've learned it's okay to fail and that my training friends are wonderful people in how they supported me (MG included), I've learned how not to be so hard on myself, and like Kyla how to enjoy my time off.  Failure also taught me how much I want IMCA!!!  Gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr

save a % of the raise every month and put it towards something really cool to show off a big race (IM) in your house.

ME!  I haven't done squat since last Wednesday, been coughing my head off for a week straight.  Actually don't feel bad at all, but can't see myself doing any kind of cardio right now.  Nevertheless, I am in for a 5K on Saturday morning.  It will be SLOW I am sure, so we will call it a training run instead of a race.  Actually one of the sororities at Auburn is putting the thing on, so I am sure the scenery will be worth the entry fee

Ah, so many lessons to be learned from our wonderful MG.
I have missed that Grrrrrr, Tracy!

I have learned that next year I really need to schedule an off-season for my sanity, my body's recovery and to maintain a happy home life.  I don't think I have stopped since last April and it is wearing on me (us) mentally...not so much physically, but for sure mentally.  Even though I am not a big "racer" like some of you guys who do races every other week during the summer, my races tend to be big ones (for me) like last year's HIM and then December's marathon...then my upcoming HIM...and I need a break!

It would be nice to ride for fun, instead of always with HR zone awareness, etc...this is taking some of the fun out of training.  Sure, am I getting faster?  I guess, but some days, I would like to jog with my dog on the trails and not feel bad about stopping to let her smell the flowers...and not have to rush home to get to the pool every other day.  I've talked to the coach and he is going to try to structure more of this sort of thing occasionally to make me happy, after all, it is supposed to be fun!

I've learned that it is so much more fun to train with other people. Almost like not training at all. Joining the Guelph Triathlon Club has provided me with a bit more incentive and drive to get back into training after the OFF season. I have found that not only is there comradarie (sp) but people expect you to be out and ask about you when you don't show up.

Also it is best to take that time to let nagging injuries heal.

Nice job Tracy!!!!  Really great to get a promotion in this economic environment.  How about a bike case?  You seem to be the queen of road races!  I am buying one this week in preparation for Lonestar.  A second idea would be a ticket to come see us at Lonestar......do you need more ideas?

I'm racing in my first triathlon this Saturday! It's a mini, but I thought it'd be good to get one in before a "real" sprint. 300 yard swim, 8 mile bike, 2 mile run. I think I'm ready - No....I KNOW I'm ready. Bring it!
