Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DougRob - 2010-03-04 11:53 AM As my first (and very likely only) marathon approaches (17 days to go) I thought I would share some thoughts. Sounds like a good "off-season" to me. 49 running 4-4:30 is a heck of an accomplishment in itself. Heck a marathon in general is. From experience I can give a few pointers. Be honest with yourself in what you think you can run and you could even shave a bit off due to the race nature. Pick the pace group that is closest to your time and run with them. I did my first mary and ran with a co-worker for the first 8 miles, at a pace that was much faster than I should have been running, which resulted in a lot of run/walking towards the end. I will leave out weather conditions being horrible that day etc, but I treated it too much as a social event as a race. My second mary, I ran with a pace group. The pacer was a very bubbly young lady who had run 100+, but she chatted like there was no tomorrow. Some people like it because it distracts others hated it. I hung back so I did not hear her voice as much but close enough to keep pace with them. Marathon running is a big mind game especially for the first timer. I have heard something before that goes to the tune"You run a marathon in 3 parts, the first 10 miles with your head, the second 10 with your legs, and the last 6 with your heart" There is a lot to get out of it. Run smart the first part, do not go out too fast, biggest mistake you will see. The second part comes from training and putting in the miles. The last bit, yeah about mile 20, it starts getting harder because you can only take in so much nutrition during the race and your body starts to run out. I ditched my pace group at about mile 24 or 25 and ran the rest myself. I have had ITBS in both legs (right for the first and left for the second) that hurt my training as well as a sprained ankle last year. It does take a toll on your body. Although i told my wife I wasnt going to run again this year, I may, would love to get under the 4 hour mark ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Doug--Happy early birthday.....I think you have done an admirable job training for this first marathon! And remember there really is no shame in walking. I know quite a few superb marathoners who walk the water stops to drink and get their legs a little fresher. Often you can be as fast if not faster, doing it. Either way, you will do it and be better for it. DJ--you asked how to keep you HR down so we answered that question. If you also want to get faster, you need a plan from that coach that gives you longer Z2 rides to build the engine and some shorter Z3/4 efforts to build your speed. For those of you who know Chet, you may want to send a good luck inspire or FB. His BQ attempt is this weekend. Did my second or third five miler today. Foot was totally fine, a little sore now, but hopefully nothing serious. Tomorrow is the big kick butt bike ride 98/100/102 LT interval ride (which Kim compelted quite successfully) so I am hoping to do the same. Should have said one other thing given my annual learning...if I don't kill this ride, there will always be a next time and life will go on! I am learning....slowly, but surely. Weekend is pretty quiet otherwise...the man is going up north and I am being strictly held to less than 9 workout hours this week so I will be twiddling my thumbs a lot. Wonder if that burns calories? ![]() Edited by SSMinnow 2010-03-04 1:15 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just catching up...sorry if some of this is late. Tracy- CONGRATS!!! That is AWESOME!!!! Do you have Computrainer already? Hair...I cut mine drastically short late last summer and am just now growing it out (per hubby request). It's going to take a LONG time. Was this post yesterday? What did you decide to do? Here's my pic. Trina- Good Luck this weekend! You are going to ROCK IT!!! Can't wait to read your race report. John- I couldn't find your post about Atlanta. I keep hoping you and Jarrett will come to SA so we can ride and then drink a few. Kim- I hear you on the schedule. Yesterday was CRAZY. I felt like every second was scheduled from the time I got off to the time I went to bed so I could get everything in. Update on me... I ran for 20 min straight on the TM with no walk breaks and relatively no pain! Yea!!!! Hopefully I can do it again this weekend outdoors. Got a massage yesterday and holy cow my IT band was tight and sore. Going to try and get another one next week to keep it loose while I build the miles back up. |

Perhaps that's what she's doing? Now I feel way better! Twiddling thumbs - you actually burn calories if you play video games...does that count? *winks* Edited by CyborgQueen 2010-03-04 2:28 PM |

Going to try and get another one next week to keep it loose while I build the miles back up. You look very nice with your hair short like that! I could never dare to cut my hair that short. I have thin and very straight hair, so I will look like a boy! I did cut off 16 inches a few years ago, and then 14 inches last year and donated it to Locks of Love. I prefer my hair a bit on the long side because I don't do anything with it, and I just find it so much easier putting it in a ponytail/bob thing instead of fiddling around with fixing it. Congrats on the run!! :-) Keep up the great work! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kelly: Love the pic. I think you need to change your avatar....it's like two different people! Really happy to hear you ran 20 mins pain free. Hope you used your roller on those legs afterwards! Jeff: I really don't think age has anything to do with running a fast marathon....I didn't start running until I was 40 and didn't BQ until I was 45, Kim was 45 also ......you might be a young buck, but us old does can run too. Referene in keeping with Kelly's pic below... tri-chic - 2010-03-04 1:17 PM Just catching up...sorry if some of this is late. Tracy- CONGRATS!!! That is AWESOME!!!! Do you have Computrainer already? Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great pics!! Ummmm, I had to search to find a picture of me not all sweaty/swollen/red-faced, etc. Kinda sad, huh? So here's one of our fam the Thanksgiving before last (I think -- it might be too big to u/l). We're kinda crazy. Then my daughter and me this past December. And just because I found this one funny... my kids "eating" flour one afternoon when we were baking cookies. My kids have crazy psycho energy and creativity. It's one reason I work out so much -- to keep up with them!! Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess I base it off BQ times that tend to go up with age group. I did not mean to imply that older age groups should be slow. I played leap frog with a man who was 85-89 my first marathon. That was humbling. As life goes on there are more things to deter from training so I feel it is more of an accomplishment to overcome all of that. Sorry for any negative feelings the first post could have generated. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DJ - I'm with you on getting a tad frustrated and mystified on how to keep HR down and at the same time increasing speed. From what I've been told, the only way to do that is to keep training, put in the time and it will come?? Reub - Precisely the reason I decided to get into triathlons - keep me physically active. I was burned-out on every other type of activity. Serious burnout. Suzy - Cute Mexico pic!! And your hair rocks! Mine was almost the same color earlier this year. Then I went a shade darker and liked it - closer to my naturally very dark brown hair. Thought I'd try going all the way back to my natural color yesterday - Unfortunately I think my hairdresser lost her mind. I now look like a middle-aged goth chick. Long black hair with burgundy highlights?! Neato. I'm NOT happy. Kyla - Short hair makes me look like a man. However, I would LOVE to have smaller breasts - you're lucky. Also, what an adorable family you have! Kelly - I love that pic. You're hair looks awesome short, and the deer seems to like it, too. Is that really a real deer, or is that photoshopped? If it's not photoshopped, how do you know the deer? Is s/he a pet? Steve - Freaky wild a$$ monkey $ex? Really? Are you sure you didn't just trip and fall again on your way to Walgreen's to get your pain meds refilled? |
