IdealMuse - 2008-05-06 2:49 PM My local Bike shop is like $325 for a fitting too, so it's not uncommon for a higher end place. They spend a few hours with you taking all kinda of measurements, checking flexibility, setting up the computer bike, making small adjustments, checking your spin out, re-adjusting your shoes and fit you for shoes if needed, address how to work on any physical idiosyncrasys and so on. I didn't pay for my fitting (its a long story) but if I had had the money I would say it was worth it, but if your just looking to make a few bike adjustments I'd find another shop.

I had the same adjustment as you did, from a certified fitter, which took about 2 hours, for $100. So I guess your mileage may vary. It might be supply/demand in the area, with Northern Virginia being a higher supply of fitters, and thus, a lower price.

I know you are in NY, but if you are ever down here on business and want the number of my guy, send me a PM and let me know.

Where did you go for your fitting? I am in Leesburg and in a month or so after I get a few miles on my bike and my wifes bike we will go in for a fitting.

Eric Sorrenson did my fitting out at Bonzai in Falls Church (www.tribonzai.com). My phone isn't next to me, or I would grab his number now. If I remember, I will PM it over to you.  The guys at Bonzai will have it for sure though.

I understand that the catalogs are old, but even the 2008 closeout sale flyer specifically says for the Parma - "Campagnolo Xenon/Mirage". It really doesn't matter though. I'm fine with what I got.

...

There was a sales flier? never saw that.

Oh and new news...fiddled with more stuff on the Varese. After putting in air into the tires, it turns out I'm going to be running a lot less seat post than I thought. Scrappy, I don't know how you've gotten 3 inches on your 51, because I'm probably not doing much better on my 48. I guess my inseam is shorter than I thought.

I'm pretty sure this is going to throw out any chance of doing well on the Parma. I haven't gotten around to putting that together as much, but I doubt I'll bother.

That's cool, the first time that I have seen that flier too.

As for the component differences, it may have to do with supply as it dwindled. I know that the two Parmas that I bought for different people had Xenon/Mirage components, and I had seen posts in this thread (maybe around page 11/12?) that were talking about as inventory went near the bottom, Javelin was getting into the last of the gear, which may have been outfit differently.

Not defending it, just thinking that they may have had a few mostly-complete frames in the different types sitting around that they finished off as completes with components they had in the warehouse that differed from what that flier showed.

Generally, the top tube on a tri bike is always going to be shorter for the same rider on a tri bike than on a road bike.  Anecdotally, seems about 2-3cm difference for people i know, depending on how you have the bike set up.  So you might actually be ok for the Parma.  Defintiely worth trying, anyway.

Got my Parma fit and tweaked by a real pro last night... wow, what a difference. Compared to the bikes I grew up riding this thing is incredibly responsive. Plus I don't feel like I'm getting prison raped by the saddle anymore, which is a nice change.

I'll just have to chalk that first bike shop up to an $85 object lesson: Research the shop before you bring your bike in.

Anthony, could you please measure your height with a tape measure tonight and report your findings? I'm 5'4.5" with a 28 inch inseam, and I barely clear the top tube on my 51.

I may end up selling my bike because of my impending shoulder issues and because the bike might just be too big. I only have the seat up about an inch. Is that proper? I really can't afford $350 for a bike fitting on Long Island.

"Javelin is getting out of the complete bike buisness and will just be selling high end frames. They are clearing out their stock of complete bikes. "

Is this quote from the ebay add correct?

My understanding is that they are getting ready to move and didn't want to move a lot of inventory. I had not heard that they were trying to get out the complete bike frame business.

The sales flyer from Javelin referenced above says basically the same thing: going from complete bikes to just high-end framesets.

When I picked up my bike, Dave told me that they've been essentially out of the complete bike business for a while - that with only 2 guys running the business, it doesn't make any sense to sell $1000 complete bikes, when they can sell $10,000 custom frames. The math just doesn't compute.

Ok so here goes my I am an idiot story. I waited for about 5 days for my wifes Parma to get out of the shop with its tune up.

We drive to the WO&D and parked. After getting my gear on I rode up to meet her at the beginning of the trail. As I pulled up next to her I unclipped my left foot and stopped as I stopped I lost my balance and started falling to the right (still clipped in). I tried to grab the top tube on her bike to keep from falling and fell on her back wheel. Now as you are falling out of your chair thinking of this in your head realize that I am almost 300 lbs (299 this morning). I bent her wheel and her rear derailer hanger. So to sum it up I am shopping for her a new wheel and we didn't get to ride a foot.

Yea me.

I wanted to give Javelin props for customer service. I tried to fix the bent rear derailer hanger without success. I called Javelin in hopes of finding a local store who caried their bikes to purchase a hanger for my wifes bike. We have a ride at 7am Friday morning so I needed it quick. Geoff went a step further and sent me the hanger for the cost of shipping.

I am becomming a big fan of Javelin as I go.

Because this thread will not die...

Does anyone know if they have any Narnis or Vareses in 47/48? I can't get anyone on the phone and was curious.

Ordered a Varese 61cm yesterday morning.  Dave mentioned a "couple" left.  I might be able to get it ready to race Buffalo, MN June 1st.  It's a calculated risk to buy the bike without a formal fitting, but I couldn't resist.  Dave was confident I could make it fit.  I'm hoping I don't have to play with stem length.

 Me: 6'6" 36" inseam, 215 lbs.  I'll re-post on the fit after it's assembled.

So is everyone who purchased a Narni or Varese in agreement to go down one size due to reach issues?

Nice, a string of first posts. :P I'm surprised they still have bikes left.

My 48cm Varese came out to be around 19.5 pounds sans pedals. Fairly respectable.

Sizing down isn't really the rule, but seems to be the case for the most part. Try and look through the thread to see how the bikes have fit others. All I can say is that if you're 5'5" or below, a 48cm is the way to go.

Generally when ordering a Tri or TT bike you do go down one size or a couple cm in seat tube length because of the postion you ride on it.

gotcha covered davhamm!

note the javelin bike sizes indicate seat tube length, NOT top tube length. ask Dave/Geoff for the corresponding top tube sizes for the bikes youe' interested in.
