That kind of sucks.... maybe even NEW Campagnolo stuff may not work. May need a whole new drive train just to upgrade wheels.....

No, I think the stuff is newer, the guy just assumed it was "oddball" since it wasn't in his antiquated catalog. That LBS sucked. Found a better one a couple weeks later.

Rynamite - 2008-06-13 2:51 PM Except my Jav has Campy stuff... and I think CT got a Jav too... so it MIGHT have Campagnolo compenents.

Yeah, this is the type of stuff I'm talking about. The guy who assembled it called it Campy stuff. Of course, he also said it was Campy stuff he'd never seen and showed me how it's not in his catalog... from 2004.

That kind of sucks....  maybe even NEW Campagnolo stuff may not work.  May need a whole new drive train just to upgrade wheels.....

Happend to me on my MTN bike.  Had some OLD 7 speed stuff which went away.  Needed a new back tire but they only had 8 speed hubs.  So I needed a new 8 speed cassette, deraileur, AND shifter.  So a $150 dollar MTN bike wheel cost me $500 to replace everything or I couldn't ride it.

That's not the case.  I already upgraded my Parma wheels.  You just need a wheel with campy hub.  Most wheels can be ordered with either.  The bigger problem is that it is hard to find campy stuff on discount sites (like chainlove) as they are not as popular in the US as is Shimano, but they are very popular in Europe.

Changing your components to Shimano would be silly at best.  You would need to spend wayyyyyyyyy more than you spent on the bike to change them out.  We are talking at least $1000 at a low level groupo.

chadtower - 2008-06-13 2:44 PM Ooh nice wheel set. I don't know enough about components yet to know if they'd fit on my bike.

I don't know much about roadies, but I THINK they'll fit... your bike should have 700's.

It does but I'm not sure of what Shimano means at this point other than the brand name.

Shimano IS a brand, and will only work with shimano cassettes and deraileurs.  Most stuff is shimano, so you would be fine in almost all cases.

Except my Jav has Campy stuff... and I think CT got a Jav too... so it MIGHT have Campagnolo compenents.

That's what you have to check.  Won't work if you got campy....

it'll work - you would just have to change the hub.  About $100 to do it yourself.

Yeah, but relacing a wheel does not sound like much fun.  Never did it, so I would worry I got it right....

It's actually not that bad.  It used to be harder - but with the invention of the sealed bearing - you just need the right tools.  BTW, campy has different tools than Shimano for a lot of parts too.  It's a racket, I tell you.

That is not what I meant.  Just saying if it was some really outdated campy stuff, there may be a compatability issue with even the NEW campy stuff.

It happend to me on my MTN bike when shimano discontinued the 7speed line.  I had a whole bike set up for 7 speed, with not 7 speed parts out there.  had to upgrade to an 8 speed to replace the rear tire.

If new campy is completely compatable with everything campy ever made through recent history, then it's not a problem.  I don't use campy so I'm not sure.

Changing to shimano would be wasting money.

Sorry - I wasn't clear - That's not the case was to the LBS guy saying it was old or odd.  Not to your assessment.  Should have been clearer.

heh, no doubt!  shimano even has different tools from MTN to road.  I have THREE, yes THREE different crank pullers for my different shimiano components.  60 bucks worth of crank pullers, and how often do I yank a crank?    Maybe once every couple years.....

I was going to get one for my wife - but they are too small for her.  She has to wear a large jacket because of her height.

Stop it!!! I just talked myself OUT of buying it. I don't ride in torrential downpours, and if it's just lightly raining, I can handle that. See? I don't need it.
