Member 213 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Jennifer, I know what you mean about dropping your head on the trainer. I did that quite a lot through the winter. I finally got outside for a long ride this weekend and was wishing I could have dropped my head. My neck muscles are a bit stiff this morning! Also, I would describe my wife support as luke warm. She did come to my HIM last year after missing my first two triathlons. She does a ton though taking care of the kids while I am training, so I can't complain much. Like other partners in the group, she is signed up for her first sprint triathlon next month. I don't expect that she will catch the bug though. After my ironman this year, I plan on dropping endurance training quite a bit to reconnect to the family (and the house, car etc etc that has taken the back seat). Two years in a row is enough. 2015 though?? -Todd |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Having such a hard time doing anything today...I forgot how it gets harder for me to train this time of year, since I often work until 3 or 4 am. By the time I get up, it's too hot for the long run I was wanting to do. So I'm drinking too much coffee at the computer and hoping for race reports to enjoy soon! Great job Ken and Robin, you guys are inspiring! Does anyone have experience with the online coaching subscription at BT (or anywhere else)? Right now I'm using a non-BT training plan but after my Oly races in June I am thinking about using the BT Bridge to HIM plan to get ready for (GULP) my first HIM. Just wondering if the online coaching option would be worth adding. Primarily I would probably use it to get feedback on all of the moving around of workouts I tend to do based on my shifts. I'm also learning to use HR for workouts and always have some questions about that. Plus, as my husband points out, I would then have someone I was paying to (at least pretend to) be as interested in my training data as I am. Jaime |

I like to use hot days as prep for races, since I know most of my races will be hot! It's good practice to train like you race. I use an online coach. I have the added benefit of him being local, but I pay for an online service. It's nothing I couldn't do myself, but it takes a lot of time and effort out of my hands. I really enjoy it. Plus, it's challenged me to find time to do things I normally would not. I don't have the forward looking scope either. I thought I did.....but realized I didn't. Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Here's a race report Jaime. Just a sprint and not too inspiring. I was happy with the result, just not a lot of fun. I need this to be fun if I'm not going to win any prize money http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... I dont know how to do links in the new BT.... Never used the coaching tool, but I am using a BT HIM plan and juggled everything around too. |

New user 160 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Congrats on pushing through the race, Bill! I enjoyed your race report--good that you recognized that "bad" attitude can impact the race and that you seem to already have recovered from it and are ready to move on. Congrats to Ken and Robin! It was a hot one there--I had friends volunteering who said it was a really great race but HOT! Also, the 2nd place female, Mandy McLane, came out to our tri club meeting last month. She's really cool--she went on an 18 mile bike ride with us (in Friday evening rush hour traffic--I was so afraid we were going to have an elite's bike crash on our conscience!), and then she spoke with us for at least an hour regarding her training, nutrition, life as a pro triathlete, etc. It's great to see that she did well in the race. I had a very bad weekend of NO training! None at all! That never happens...but we were busy with preparing the house for guests (we take that opportunity to do a major spring cleaning). So I was on my feet all day both days and just didn't have it in me to get out there and ride/run. Heading out to San Francisco this Thursday for 5 days of fun! Makes me a little nervous to go off my training plan for so long, but I will get a couple of runs in, weights at the hotel gym, possibly a swim at the Y near the hotel, and a bike ride (tourist style) on Saturday. At least I know I'll be active the whole time. Then it's back to hard core training with less than 3 months to IM Louisville! Have a great week everyone. |

Rita Actually, there has been some smack talk among the group of riders from Las Vegas that came down saying that it was about closer to 7000' of climbing. However, they got a little lost, and did a full 100 vs my 89. So I'm just going to gather the data, and average them out. Day 2 was also a lot of climbing for 49 miles, 2700'. RR soon. |

Veteran 458 Greensburg, PA | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Things have been a little crazy lately, so I am just now catching up. NAME: Karen STORY: I am 45 yoa and have been tri-ing for 5 years now. I was never an athlete growing up so this still feels new to me. I have lost 125 pounds, and have about 20 to go. I have never felt better in my life! I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis since last January (which is actually feeling mostly better now.) Of course it has now drifted up to my achilles (which still bothers me a good bit. I am starting back to PT next week.) FAMILY STATUS: Married to the best supporter/sherpa/cheerleader, Tom. No children, but we do have a retired greyhound named Magnum and a crazy cat named Higgins. CURRENT TRAINING: I use a local trainer to set my plan for me. She has trained my the last 2 seasons to 2 successful HIMs. Training this year for my fist full - Beach2Battleship. 2013 RACES: Assorted sprint/olys leading up to B2B full on October 26! I finished my first tri of the season this weekend while my husband and I were in Charlotte for the NASCAR race. It was fun, but I was definitely not prepared for it due to my injuries. Speaking of that, I was at the doctor last week and we talked about PRP injections. Anyone had that done, or know of anyone who has? Good? Bad? Helpful? I am looking for anything to help me! My doctor told me that I can workout as tolerated, I just want to be able to workout without pain! I want to enjoy my workouts again, not just tolerate them! Happy training! Karen |

The plans are solid, although D3 likes more swimming than I do ( of course that could have been my issue yesterday!). Plus you get the feed back. |

There is sprint tri at our local recreation center in two weeks. How should I modify my training in order to be better prepared for the race? Swimming will be a wash. I have been to the pool 2 times this year, but I am OK with the distance. Just wondering how to adjust in order to be ready for the shorter distance and higher intensity of the bike and run. If it were me, and not an "A" race, I would just train through it using it as a brick with friends not worrying about the intensity Eddie. |

Keep it up guys! My sprint race went okay today. It was rainy and cold so I wasn't really feeling it and they changed the course so comparisons to last year don't mean much. I didn't see any e-mails today either! T Thanks Bill, it was highlight of my race. The bike has been a focus this year, but apparently at the expense of the swim. The run was just survival mode with it being 91 degrees and sunny. No complaints from me on this one. The swim on the other hand was a WWF cage match that I just never got comfortable with. I did get a chance for a brief chat with Robin on the bike course! I think she was having a good race! It wouldn't surprise me that she had a good swim as she is a strong swimmer. I met her yesterday as well as her husband and dad, glad to be able to meet any of you in person! I hope you get to enjoy the rest of your vacation Robin!! I survived my first half - woot!!! Great race, but definitely on the hot side. Ice kept in strategic places kept me going on the run! I think I placed 42nd out of 70, with my best leg being the swim 15 out of 70. There was lots of carnage by the time I get on my 2nd/3rd lap on the run due to the heat! I definitely would have done better if it was cooler - but am just fine with the way I finished! Awesome meeting you Ken!!!!! Great to hear you did well - when I get a chance I will go back on read your RR - you looked super strong when you passed me on the bike! Well MotherNature is all over the place here (and everywhere it looks like) We went from needing to turn our heat back on last week to hitting 92 yesterday with tornado warnings all over the place. It was interesting on my run how much my HR went up when the shade went away the last 1/4 of my run. Looks like rain for the rest of the week with it only getting to 60 on Saturday--ugh! Looks like I'm trainer bound for the weekend. Was planning 1st OWS of the season on Friday, but that's on hold till we see if the rain clears out. Next week looks clear so hopefully I can dust off my wetsuit before REV3. |

Member 326 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Just a bit of a mid week brag. Back in February we did a 400m TT at my master's swim. 8:05 was my time. I worked with the coaches and improved my technique, especially the high elbow pull and bi-lateral breathing. I was making progress and even moved up a lane. Well, today we did another 400m TT and my time was 6:59. Now I just have to learn how to flip turn and I can cut even more time off. I have been out for several walk/run sessions and everything is feeling fine as far as the leg goes. I am working on holding the aero position in the aero bars for longer and longer periods. 2 more weeks and it is the first half ironman distance tri of the season. I hope all the work pays off. Have a great time in Key West!! One of the benefits of having your race over is the relaxation!! Enjoy Robin!! |

I hope you get better weather for your training! I think this will pass through this weekend and be better next week! |
