Gretchen -- enjoy the last couple weeks before the HM!  Are you doing any running outside?  Is the race outside (on pavement)?  If so, consider doing a few runs outside (not necessarily the long one) to make sure your body is accustomed to it.

I do three runs a week outside, totaling 11miles (3,5,3). I've been doing the long run inside each week because of weather to start with, then when the longs runs got really long, it was just simpler to keep doing them inside where I can get water refills easily. The race is outside, on a mix of pavement and trails.

Sounds like your weekly mileage is good for your upcoming HM!

I found a nice small (~8oz) hand-held water bottle was a good start for long run hydration. After getting used to that I now carry a 12 oz bottle that also doubles as a phone holder. For my trail running I now use a Nathan hydration backpack, as having my hands free on rocky trails is important. An option I've also seen for long outdoor runs is to do laps that center back to an "aid station" (such as your car, etc.).

Over the weekend I hit the trails again for 5 slightly rugged and soggy miles. Despite the week of sunny weather there is still enough water in the hills for the ground to still be moist. Is this what it's like to be in an area that gets regular rain? During the week I'm sticking to my regular 3-4 mile runs, adding some hills in for good measure.

As a change of pace from the endurance sports I started taking a weekly class learning Medieval German broadsword fencing. It's a good upper body workout swinging around a heavy wooden sword!

On the beer topic, this weekend I found and enjoyed an excellent IPA called "Big Sipper" from Knee Deep Brewing Co. Nice balance of bright hops and just enough malt. Sadly it was the last bottle the deli had, otherwise I would have picked up a couple more!

Final bonus, updated my profile picture to one with my BDAS jersey!

Thankfully, the garage owner stopped them from taking it. They were going to take it without the keys and title. Then, they didn't come on the say it was supposed to be taken. There was some screw up with the title transfer. Not to discourage anyone from donating a vehicle - I think it's a great option to be able to do some good, rather than trading it in for $100 or worse having a dealership just refuse to take it.  But I had a bad experience as well (not nearly as bad as yours though!).  Tried donating a motorcycle to Habitat for Humanity.  They make you enter every last detail about the vehicle online, then before they'll contact you to pick it up, they force you to sign the title over and send it in.  Well they contacted me all right, to tell me they wouldn't take it.  Ok no prob - then WHY DID I HAVE TO SIGN THE TITLE OVER FIRST?  Then they wouldn't send the title back.  By that point I had received a cash offer on the motorcycle so I sold it, without a title.  I had to pay to get a dup title from the RMV...

Hopefully some of the others besides HfH and Humane Society handle things better!

Nicole (can I call you 'ON' Original Nicole? haha) - those swim splits - MAN!  I know you can't win a tri in the water but it's not even funny how much slower I am there compared to the bike and run.  I'd have a better chance at competitively speaking Greek or something for the first leg.

Gretchen - good luck with the HM!  I'm targeting one for March but still on the fence of whether to do it.  I'm on point on the training plan for it though.

ON works for me! And I def wasn't making those splits haha, but thanks!

Was going to go to a HIIT cycling class after work but it was BEAUTIFUL out when I left work (low 50s and sunny) so I decided to go on a run instead. Three miles at 9:43 pace. Feeling pretty good about it. Definitely need to get out there more though! Also came home and foam rolled, which felt awesome. Starting the February challenge a day early!

There are a few tweaks that I'll be making over the next few rides, but I really like the bike a lot!  Unfortunately, it was cold out the day I rode, and I'm kind of a weenie when it comes to cold.  My toes were completely numb by the end (made my transition run off the bike interesting!).

My old P2 will become the dedicated trainer bike and the Argon will come outside.  Since it was cold out, I didn't really stop for too many pics along the way, but here are a few (one of my tiny car with two bikes on top, one of me at the finish of my fit session, and a selfie on the maiden voyage).

Nicole - Nothing like a little bike porn to brighten up a cold snowy evening! How awesome was that maiden voyage?

Went to Masters practice last night. Forgot my watch, so I'm not sure exactly how far we swam in the hour. I was getting a little frustrated b/c 1) I found out I'm picking my head up a little when I'm breathing and wasting so much energy. 2) I'm in the second fastest lane so was trying to keep up with them doing a total of 19 100s (6 @ 1:45, 5 @ 1:40, 5 @ 1:45, 3 @ 1:35). I am not there yet though, so ended up doing some 75s instead. All while trying to fix my breathing, and failing. This will likely be a focus for the next few weeks.

I got it this time. Thanks for resending it! What's the plan/contest. My back is dying to play.

That's some fast swimming - bad breathing or not!

So far the donation process has been fine - I signed up online and they called me yesterday to sort out the pickup details.  I just need to clean the thing out and leave the title with the service manager at the shop, or I can meet them there.  Given my emotional attachment to the car I'm going to be there to see her off.

That's good news Mike!

Was actually thinking about the whole emotional attachment to vehicles thing this morning, and your car in particular.  It's funny I look at '1997' and think 'that wasn't that long ago you know'...except it was twenty years ago.  I think my mind is trapped in like 2004.

I get attached to vehicles.  The good ones.  Some I can't wait to get rid of haha.  Also apparently I get attached to bicycles.  I've owned exactly one proper road bike in my adult life prior to my recent purchase of a new one.  And the plan is to sell it at a consignment sale in April.  And I don't want to.  When I spent the last year and a half shopping for a new bike, everything looked better than my 10 year old Trek and it's wonky shifting (like three up, two down to accomplish one up when in the middle of the cassette).  Now I want to keep the Trek - put it on the trainer, use it as a climbing bike (even though I live nowhere near the mountains).  Anything so I don't have to see it go.  And I know how this goes too - if for some reason I was able to keep it, 99% of the time I'd grab the new one when it was time for a ride.  There's no reason to keep the old one.  I just don't want to let it go - it got me through my first Tri and no other bike will ever be able to say that....

Lots going on here. Good work everyone! I am getting back into the pool and on the bike. My running is finally where I want it and I can run 6 miles every other day keeping my pace. I now need to work on getting the pace up an extending the distance once a week.

Good to hear everything is going well so far. I wanted to be there to see my car off too, but after all the issues, I was just too emotionally drained to do it. I feel silly just writing that out, but it is true. I think I was way too attached to that car!

Survived "Quality Wednesday" at masters this morning. Spent an hour to swim 1500m, which seems ridiculous when you look at it on paper. In the moment, when you've swum 50m as hard as you can for the fourth time in a row and you are pretty sure the next exhalation will either bring up your lung or breakfast, it doesn't seem as ridiculous. Great workout!

Yesterday afternoon I got a run in. It turned into a rage run midway through. New mile PR! I was running down this quiet dead end street when a dog came racing out from behind a house. It is the county, so no leash laws. It was a bulldog. It shot out into the street and attacked my dog (a pit mix). We have a pretty good scrum going on in the street, accompanied by two terrier type dogs from the house next to the bulldog. My dog slipped her harness, so I have nothing to grab onto and I'm sure as not grabbing an unknown dog. Finally, after a bunch of yelling on my part and barking/growling/snarling on the dogs' part, the bulldog's owner comes strolling out of the house at the pace of arthritic grandma calling his dog (in a normal talking voice). Normally, I'm a let dogs be dogs type of person and know that when dogs get together sometimes there will be tiffs, but this just p!ssed me off. An unrestrained dog comes flying out of no where and attacked my dog without provocation. So, I told the owner that he needed to control his dog to prevent things like this from happening. His response was you shouldn't walk (I was running, jerk) down this road if you don't live on it. That is just ridiculous, if we all only ran on roads we lived on, we'd go insane!

I have no intention of taking that road off my normal running routes, so I guess I need to investigate animal deterrents. I was thinking some type of pressurized water spray. Does anyone know if such a thing exists? I know I could just wear my running water belt and squirt him with water from the bottle, but I want something with a little more zip than that. I don't want anything that will harm the dog.

I'd keep the old bike and make it your dedicated trainer bike!  That's what I'm doing.  I beat the crap out of my bike on the trainer (corrosive sweater over here!), so now I have a nice, new bike that I don't want to subject to that, and an old bike that's already basically held together by salt crystals.

Only catch is that the fit is a bit different between the two, but I may try to make some adjustments to get them closer.  It doesn't seem that far off on paper, but I can certainly feel it when I get on the bike.  The first few minutes of the warm-up are spent thinking about just how different it feels!

Ugh! Rage run indeed! I'd be pretty upset, too. I actually have a mild(ish...maybe a little more than mild) fear of dogs not on leashes while I'm running due to a traumatic experience when I was a kid, so I am not quite sure how I would've reacted in your situation. I'm not sure what else you could use to deter this dog. I was going to jokingly suggest pepper spray but the kind for bears that reaches really far so you can stop him before he gets to you guys (promise it's a joke though!)

Good question! I'm bad at thinking stuff like this up! Do all 5 exercises every day, or next Browns/Ravens game, you have to wear the other team's jersey, and post a pic on fb? That should be pretty motivating, although it's at least 7 months away...

Any other thoughts? Should we make it 5 times a week instead of every day? Let me know what you think!

I love my morning workouts....they set the day off right

As for the guy....don't wait for him to ask if you're interested.....ask if he's up for a beer, dazzle him with your knowledge of beer and being a bad@$$ triathlete, and see if you're a good fit

They actually make dog spray, two different versions. One has capsaicin (gives pepper its heat) and one use citronella. My fear with sprays though is that it will kick back on me, or worse, my dog. I have been looking at some of the ultrasonic repellents, which just make an ultrasonic noise the dogs can hear, but I can't. Again, issue is my dog hearing it too, although she could stand to learn a few manners too.

Gretchen - not sure how to handle that situation. But I'm sure you did better than me. I am angry just hearing his lack of consideration.

Nicole - I agree with Nicole2. Ask him out!

2300 with SMOG squad tonight and then a couple beers with some of the members afterwards. The beer was well earned, the coach kind of killed us today.

Also, for fun I added up my January miles today, and they total less than one Ironman. Real wake up call for what lies ahead to get ready for this thing.

I hear you John - it's tough getting rid of something that you love.... even if it had quirks that drive you nuts but make it special to you. My first bike was the same way even though it had a back tire that was so warped that it wobbled going down hills. I had just purchased a new Trek (Billy Baroo) but I couldn't stop riding the old one every now and then. It took an order from my wife to finally throw it away. And that bike easily had 20 years on it.... Why not keep it if you can.

Lots going on here. Good work everyone! I am getting back into the pool and on the bike. My running is finally where I want it and I can run 6 miles every other day keeping my pace. I now need to work on getting the pace up an extending the distance once a week.

Nice work Scott! That's a lot of milage per week and it's good your body can handle it. It won't be long before you're cranking out a half marathon every week as part of your training. And as you continue to drop the weight you'll get faster. I've heard that every 10-15 pounds is a minute per mile.

DQ, here it is again, but I will also send it through a fb message in case this doesn't work. Let me know what you pick! http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/lower-back-pain-10/slideshow-exercis... and then it's ON.

Since I'd rather die than wear a Ravens Jersey (not much of an exaggeration ) let's settle on something a little different. How about this - we each set our weekly goals ( I'd like mine to be four 15 minute sessions per week). If we fall short, it's a CLP for every missed workout. I've got some silver bullets on top of my fridge that have been there for more than a year - that should provide the proper motivation for me. Would that work for you? Speaking of which - can we start tomorrow since I totally forgot it was February 1 today? you'll see why in a future post.
