Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats to all the racers, sounds like an amazing weekend, PRs all over the place and some very impressive times! Busy weekend here for me, but managed to squeeze in some good workouts: Friday: 4 miles with my wife Sat: 5.5 mile run at 7:48 Sun: 20 mile ride with FIL, then 11.2 mile run in the heat at 8:31 pace Monday: 20 mile race course ride with some extended family in prep for this weekend, it is not nearly as challenging as it seemed last year, so I am feeling good about it. A few rollers the first quarter, some good flats in the middle and then some rollers the last 5 miles. If the winds stay calm it would be great. Required me to be up at 4:15, out of the house at 4:30, Riding by 5:30, backtrack and end up making it to work still by 7:30, not too bad! I decided to mock up an 'ice' bath last night after my run in hopes of keeping my legs nice and fresh this week. There was no ice, just cold water, a strategically placed hand towel that had been soaked in hot water, and 10-15 minutes of shivering, my legs felt very good today! My race Sunday will be interesting since I am also supposed to do a 15 mile long run, any suggestions how to approach that after a race? Race: 1/2, 20, 4 Edited by jvanis 2010-06-21 10:22 AM |

Yeah now come to think of it Kona didn't lift his leg after that on the spot?! You guys are brutal! Congrats to all the awesome racers this weekend. Seemed like everyone PR'ed, podiumed or both. So today was supposed to be a normal day at the office and home before things get a little crazy later in the week. HA! I get a call from preschool - daughter's flip flop broke. Yes Daddy sent her to school w/ crappy, cheap flip flops on. (And BTW my dear - there were 2 pairs of her shoes in the shoe basket!) So I call Tony to try and figure out who is leaving work to take some shoes to the kid. And no joke while I am on the phone w/ him, the school nurse calls. Drew is in the nurse's office scratching his head like crazy. He suffering from some type of scalp irritation I think b/c of the pool. Anyway he can't focus on work. So I change back into my bike clothes and head out to get him and take shoes to preschool. UGH!!!!! Ok enough venting and whining. On the bright side, I got 45m in on the bike back/forth to work. And my kid's head feels better after some Selsun Blue. BTW - moms out there. Any issues like this w/ you kids and the pool? This seemed to start right at the same time as swim team. And on a brighter note - my son has his very first swim meet tonight. One event - Boys 6yr. and under 25m freestyle. He had his time trial internal home meet last Friday and did it in 1:09:and change. He has his mom's swimming genes. LOL |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow, lots of good racing going on this weekend! Sorry in advance for the long post... Linda - I'll echo everyone else: those are great pics! Looks like so much fun! Suzy - Great job on the PR! It sounds like you were able to really execute your race plan. Nice work! That's got to be solid motivation and a confidence builder leading up to the IM! Trevor - Excellent job on your race. And about the run... I find what helps me is just thinking about conciously approaching the first little bit of the run (maybe the first mile of a HIM, the first 1k of an Oly 10k) as almost a completely separate section of the event: this is my time to get my running legs going, get the blood flowing to different muscles, keep my HR in check, etc. I don't worry so much about speed as I do about setting up the next 90% of the run. Take it down a notch and establish a "base" or platform on which you're going to construct your run. That little urge to walk and lack of motivation might be your body fighting to control what's going on, so give it a small break right out of T2 to refocus off the bike. Hmmm. I'd love to talk to you some more with this if you want... Tiana - Congrats on triathlon number 2! Hydrating and nutrition on race day, especially in hot and humid conditions, is definitely not an easy thing! Way to nail the bike! Tracy - Rocking the bike (that's my kind of triathlete! ![]() Rob - I always like reading your RRs, and this was definitely no exception. I was laughing thinking about the goggles... clearly you were focussed and in the zone! Great PR! Andy - Great job, and fantastic swim! Trail running is DEFINITELY different than road running. The twists and turns on the run make it difficult to really get in a rhythm, and don't discount the additional mental focus it requires... you can't put your mind on autopilot when you're trail running. By the way, your nutrition logs look like you're staying disciplined... very nice. Steve - I'm happy to see you back running! Hopefully everything is coming back together properly, yes? Jeff - Busy weekend with great training! It's great you can do some of it with your wife and FIL. How would I approach a 15 mile run after a race? That's easy: very slowly. Thanks for all your nice words about my race! My girlfriend came down with the flu a week before, and inevitably, I started feeling super lousy two days before the race. My whole body felt achy and I was super congested. Leading up to the race, I was on a Dayquil/Nyquil cycle, with the occasional Theraflu at night. Add that to my lingering lower back issues and well, expectations were not high coming into it. I started off my race morning with a bagel, banana, half of a PowerBar Energize bar, water with Nuun, a Tylenol, an Aleve (wanted to take two, but I wasn't willing to risk kidney issues), and a Dayquil. The swim started great. Mass start, and I eventually found a little pod of people to draft with. We all rounded the far turn buoy and were headed home when I notice a guy in a kayak headed toward us. I turn to breathe and I can tell he's yelling something and paddling furiously at us. I breathe again and now he's pointing his paddle directly at me and yelling. So I stop and ask what's up. He says I didn't go around the buoy. I reply, um, yes I did... we all did, in fact, indicating my little group now pulling away from me. Nope, you didn't, you need to go back and go around it again, he says. Soooo, I realize there's nothing to be gained by arguing with him: the longer I tread water, the more time that's going to pass before I eventually have to go back and comply. So now I'm FURIOUS. I sprint the 50 yards back to the buoy as hard as I can, going against the flow of oncoming swimmers (I took a wide angle back to the buoy so as not to interfere with the course), and have to feed myself back into the mess around the turn. RYAN SO MAD... GRAGGGHHH. That cost me at least a few minutes, so I should've been right on my goal of 38 minutes or so. One thing about being a bad swimmer and a good biker is that my bike is often by itself in transition. I am a little embarassed that John's T1 was faster than me, but my wetsuit would. not. come. off. I HAMMERED once I was on the bike. I felt like I needed to make up some time, so once I got my breathing under control, I pushed it hard. The course itself is mainly along back roads, with plenty of rollers. The hill they added was pretty brutal. Looking back at my log, I pushed 269w up that hill, and 388w at the top where it was the steepest. The first time around it wasn't too bad, but the second time... oh man. I got out of the saddle and just stared at the road right in front of me. Lots of people were weaving back and forth and just barely turning over the pedals. Bike was very strong for me. Taking out the 3 Pros, I had the 10th fastest bike split OA, 2nd in my AG. I felt great about that. On to the run... it was a nice course on hard packed trail around Elk Lake. Pretty flat, but lots of twists and turns. As I mentioned above to Andy, the big thing about trail running is I find it hard to get in a solid rhythm. Plus, you have to constantly stare at your feet and the trail so as to avoid roots and rocks. I think I would've been faster on the road to be honest. My splits were pretty even: 47:26 and 48:36, so I paced it well. 40:29 (2:24) 2:32:44 (1:37) 1:36:02 = 4:53:14 The podium finish was only a result of a weak showing in my AG... I finished 20 minutes behind the winner. You can't control who shows up on race day, though, so I'll take it! I did get a nice New Balance chrono watch for my efforts. I woke up this morning feeling awful, very sore and achy, with my nose completely stuffed up. But as I told Fatty, that's not going to prevent me from enjoying a good beer and burger for lunch. |

Due to the G20 Summit conference in town this weekend we are closing our office on Friday for security reasons. You should see downtown Toronto. For several blocks around the conference site they have cement guard rails up with 8-10 foot high chainlink fences on top of them. They have even removed all the garbage cans and took out some sapling trees so the protesters wouldn't be able to use them as weapons. I haven't seent this many police offices in one spot since my last stop at the donut shop |

Ah hem....how about Dads......My youngest daughter had a similiar reaction when she starting swimming. Took her to the Doc (I think a Dermatologist) and they put her on some prescription shampoo that handled the problem. She swam until freshman year in high school before Pom's (Dance Team) began to rule her life. (My lord they practice all the time, even 4 days a week all summer long) It was a great scene, according to my bride, when she was around 6 years old telling the doc that she wasn't going to stop swimming if he couldn't help her, she would just have to have an itchy head! Take him to the Doc, it is worth the trip. Dino Edited by badgerintx 2010-06-21 3:36 PM |

Way to rock the course in spite of it. Smokin' fast bike -- awesome! And great job on the run. Super-duper even split. So cool!! Hope you enjoyed the race and that you can take some time and nurture yourself back to good health!! Yep, hills definitely are tough. Don't short change me on my little out-and-back on the swim! I'd already swam 50 yards past the buoy, and 50 yards back, so it was 100 extra yards! ![]() With my cold, my node is all stubbed up, so I'm drinking plenty of fluids and catching up on the new season of Top Chef. Good times. |

I'd be even MORE ticked off!! Keep resting. Glad to hear they will boot the hill next year. I'd do that race again in a heartbeat. My family LOVES Victoria and I thought it was such a lovely race. Nice and small numbers, too. So I got to ride the FANCY RACE WHEELS today!! (Orange celebrates the orange tires!) Sadly during the 30 min. when I got to push a little I was going into the wind and then up a big hill. I felt overall like my ride was really smoooooooth. And quiet. Except when I'd coast -- then my real wheel was loud clicky, which I LOVE (it's usually quiet clicky)! I also felt like I was pushing bigger gears up my hill with less effort, but I'd bet that's more rested legs than fancy wheels. In any event, I felt pretty much like a bad-@$$ out there, which is always fun. And I never stopped to pee anywhere. So there. |

So there. there's something to this. and i'm not talking about looking cool. simply exactly what you wrote. clearly those 808's didn't actually provide any noticeable advantage at ls. but going into a big race any positive mental helps. and loud click is all good and well. until you're slacking out there on the course and someone wisea$$ rides by you and says you go faster if you actually pedal. |

Steve, you might want to clean those wheels when you get them back. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone. I'm going to be off line for most of the week. I'm taking a Project Management training class all week from 8am to 6pm. Ugh. 10 hours a day of hierarchy charts and definitions. Anyway, I'll try to read as many RR as I can throughout the week. Congrats to all the racers and first time runners out there. P.S. Sam, that is too funny about the shoes. I received a call last Friday from my daughter complaining about a broken flip flop and wanting me to come to school with a new pair of shoes. How funny. |
