Tony--today it is pouring rain, thundering and hovering in the 40s..it won't be long....I agree getting outside with help to see how I have improved, but the fact remains I should be able to crank through this ride....and no matter how hard I pushed today my legs were having none of it....again. Phooey.

yeah that happens to me sometimes, some days the watts just aren't there.

I just try to do the best I can to complete the workout, if I have to do it at a lower wattage than prescribed, so be it.

..... There's a half mary marathon here in a couple of weeks that my coach is urging me to run. I've told him I don't feel prepared (longer runs have only been around 9-ish miles lately), so he's said I could do the 10K. But maybe I should gut out a half. Decisions, decisions...

really?  i figured your coach would say something more like "you're crying about a half mary marathon and IM is just about 100 days out"

good luck with that 10k.

;-)

Wow, you guys are a tough crowd. Dude, I wasn't crying about it!!! But yeah, maybe being wussy. The whole context was about pace and HR data, and my argument was that I don't feel like I'm prepared to RACE a half. But I can run one for sure. But the "I can RACE!!!" part of me doesn't want to "just" run one. But I also hate the idea of a HARD 10K. Ick. All right, will lean to the half. Now that I realize it, this is next weekend, LOL! It's a hilly course, too. I've done it once before a few years back. And when you put it that way... running a marathon in 100 days, I guess it's time to suck it up, buttercup.

awwwww, slacks.  you know i'm just joshing ya.  you're gonna rock.

just don't let your kids wear red sux hats and create an avatar out of it.

Yeah yeah I know I know, but it's good for someone to call my bluff now and again, so I thank you for that. My head is in a tizzy again. I will go run around in a track in the rain and see if I come up with an epiphany, or if I just get soaked.

SSMinnow - 2010-03-10 3:57 AM Yoo-Hoo, who's racing this weekend?????? the scoop please!

For those of us still on the sidelines let's start working on mental preparation and think about our next race (run, tri or other), what is the number one thing you want to nail?

Of course, I'm not racing this weekend, but I'm hoping to get in solid run and bike. I'm still so iffy about the swims! I miss it, but because my nose is not cooperating, it's on hold. It's kind of really stupid for me not to head to the doc and get some antibiotics for the damn sinus infection, but whatever. :-

Mental preparation -  I'm working hard to keep in my mind that it will be my race, ignore what the other people are doing and how much training volumes they've done, and don't compare (I'm an over-thinker, so it's my nature, so I'm trying to ignore that). My mom will be there, my friends will be there...so they don't care if I come in dead last (and no, I really don't want to be dead last, but you get the idea), they will cheer me on anyway because it's MY first triathlon, and 99.9% of my real-life friends never done one. :-) Plus, I will have months to prepare for the next Sprint and Oly, that's when I can really focus on my weakness and stuff I've learned from my first tri.   How's that for inspiration? :-P

How long/how many miles do you guys put on your running shoes before retiring them?

Found out today my running shoes are way past expired...I've had them 4 months, but have less than 200 miles on them (hangs head in shame).

I would think it depends on the quality of the materials and the type of road/trails you've been running on. I assume that it wear down faster if you run on the road due to the harsh asphalt.

I'm sure others will chime in.  I don't even know what it "feels" like when a shoe needs to be retired.

I've heard some people replace it every 300 miles or every 500 miles, or every 3 months, no matter how many miles.  If it "looks" bad and it feels off, then replace it. :-) If you're finding that you're replacing it too often, perhaps it's time to look for another shoe brand?

I'm not racing this weekend but I have pulled my head out of my arse and decided to put things on hold so that I can do some serious rehab on my shoulder and not have to stress during our upcoming move.  With that said, I have decided that this is the year for my first marathon ~ Bellingham Bay in September!

As for 1/2 mary pace...I have no logic behind this other than it is what works for me...I know what I'm capable of based on my long runs, my tempo runs, and always taking race day magic into consideration. With that knowledge, I set my overall goal time since I know that starting out slow and building my pace will allow me to really push it at the end!!

I don't necessarily go buy a new pair just because its been 3 months (which I've found is about the time frame for ME) or because of a certain mileage but more so when I start to "feel" it.  I notice that when its getting to be time to get a new pair (there again, usually around the 3 month mark) my legs (especially knees and shins) will start to bother me in ways that they normally wouldn't!

I know a bunch of girls that went down to do the Irongirl last year. There are a lot of 1st timers there. You will not be out of place, and you will not finish last. Regardless, who cares what others think....right??

It depends on the brand for me, but I usually get between 250-300 miles on my Adrenalines.  In the old days,  I was buying shoes every 4-5 weeks.....

My last two pairs I got 278 miles and 286 miles.  I typically start getting the feeling they are "dying" around 225 - 250 and then I stretch them out for a bit longer to put off that next purchase!  My current pair have about 170 on them but over 150 of that was on a treadmill so I am curious to see if they last any longer after not running outside as much.  I can already see that the treads are lasting longer, just not sure about the support.

I'll be saving some shoe money (and I was on the verge of a new pair of Adidas)...
I'm officially off the road.  After feeling great on my 5 miler this past Sunday...about 1.5 hours later my achilles was a little tender.  Took a few days off, but occsasionally, even walking around the house I got a little "shot"  Today tried a run...I'm out.

Looks like a lot of bike time for me.

Robin's been complaining all week about me being in a pissy mood - now she knows why.

I think I generally get about 450-500m on each pair (2 pairs a year) and then I'll even do short or bad weather runs in the old pair.  Like today since it's pouring rain, I will wear my old Brooks for my interval workout.

I have a make do mentality that drives Tony crazy sometimes.  I think it comes from growing up on a farm in the "not the highest of income levels".  Heat and A/C were luxuries.  Neither of which we really had.  LOL  Maybe Tony will share a few of his stories w/ the group for the few years we were together before getting married and he stayed at the farmhouse.
