In non covid news, since my trip to western north Carolina has been nixed, I've signed up for the Tour of Sufferlandria.  I really am not in good enough bike shape to do this properly and my training focus should be on running since I have a challenging HM in 6ish weeks, but since I'm here, I'm doing it in some form or fashion!  I look forward to seeing all the great numbers Jim puts up!

They are prioritizing the 80+'s by age and pre-existing conditions and apparently at a fairly fit 82, she's too far to the young, healthy end of her age group. Interesting how they are doing the seniors here--instead of one mass campaign for 65+, it's a "rolling start" beginning with 80 and up, then 75-79, 70-75, etc. Just like Kona.
At 82, that just seems crazy that she's not already vaccinated, let alone on a list to get done immediately. I got my aero bars on today. Obviously I will have to play with adjustments to them, but also to the seat.... I've been looking for a better seat lately, but our local selection is extremely limited, so I'll be moving to either a saddle demo program online, or the purchase and return method through REI. I'm also considering the bi-saddle. Anyone on here have any experience with that one? Thanks.

I was partial to an ISM saddle on my tri bike. So much so that I wore through the leather. I liked the ability it gave me to move forward and back on the saddle and both of those positions were comfortable. I demo'd through my LBS, and highly suggest whatever demo method you may be able to get.

Originally posted by alaskatri Our state requirements for the latest phase had been for folks over 50. They opened it up a bit late yesterday to include those working in a "congregate" setting, and specifically included law enforcement, corrections, and judicial officers and staff that work with public, regardless of age. We haven't done jury trials since last March but we are really needing to get them going again. Hopefully that's a step in the right direction. Just got my appointment secured for next Thursday, so I'm pretty excited about that. And I got my first set of clip-on aerobars in the mail today, so I'm doubly excited!!!!!
Congratulations on both. I had one jury trial in October and then they moved us back to phase 1 after Halloween. The circuit judge doesn't think we will move back to having jury trials until April, even though I have them scheduled in March. I have 30 felony trials scheduled over the next 5 months. i think a lot of defendants are playing COVID chicken with the system. Hoping for a better deal, dismissal, or just not ready to give up their drug of choice. The vaccine has gotten very political here, ie me getting pulled out of line by the National Guard. The morning I was scheduled to get it they reclassified me down a level. I had a long "discussion" (I did not Karen her, sorry Karen) with the head of our health department. She decided that because of our job requirements, she would have myself, my assistant prosecutor and victim's advocate vaccinated. The legal assistant's don't have to see people, so they were not included. We have had 3 counties that have the new variant. It is highly contagious and takes seconds to transmit. Symptoms are the same.

Congrats to you both! It is maddening that vaccines and masks etc are so political.

We keep going in and out of phases around here, so our trials are crazy backed up too. We have just moved back to criminal jury trial stage, but I won't hold my breath that it will stay in that stage for long as Florida has a big number of UK variant cases, so we are a ticking time bomb. Our Governor doesn't think so, but he lies about everything especially anything related to COVID. Thankfully, our judicial system is more in tune with science and facts.

Stay safe!!

Super interesting to hear - i was feeling very despairing about it all this morning but the commiseration maybe doesn't help the situation but makes me feel less like our own decision makers are the only ones really really struggling.

It is not an easy task to figure out who to prioritize, eg, do you go with the most at risk or the ones spreading it? Who are the most at risk? This is made worse with such a limited supply. Thankfully, the supply is growing, but there will still be major logistical issues getting shots in arms. Some Governors have done better than others. Florida does not have one of those Governors, but even here things are improving.

I had heard that Florida has approved vaccines for those 65 and older, so we have been working to get my MIL vaccinated. We were working on the Publix site, because she won't easily travel out of the area. Anyone want to guess what the demographic looks like for 65 and older in our retirement town?

We are now at the point where one of us will take the day off work to drive her. Keep in mind that she drives herself to get cigarettes and blackberry brandy just fine.

Gravel bike talk

The weather here has been awful for outdoor activities.  I mean, some weeks, I feel fortunate that I am able to get my runs completed (I do not have access to a treadmill at this time) and it's been so wet/soggy that going for a hike is not at all appealing.  As a result, my bike research has been 100% online so far.

Question for the group:

I can most likely get access to a Niner RDO and a Cervelo Aspero to test ride.  My mechanic carries Niner and my local tri store caries the Cervelo. I am guessing that the Niner is on the more relaxed geometry side and the Cervelo on the more aggressive (for a gravel bike) side.  Is that right? I

So I had a preference for the Niner than I should also look at the more relaxed Salsa and Obed?  And if I like the Cervelo I should also look at the 3T and Ventum?  Or is it not that cut and dried?

I think that my basic question here is about geometry.

I need to talk to the Cervelo place. They also carry Quintana Roo.  I wonder if that means they can get Obeds in store?

It seems to make sense that if you feel you prefer one of the geometries over the other that you look at similar style bikes to compare. But I also wonder if that could be misleading. Say you try the Aspero and don't like the feel. Is it the geometry or is it that it didn't fit you properly where a more "aggressive"  geometry in another brand would feel great.  Have you thought about maybe getting a bike fit first? I know we have a number of excellent fitters around here that do the pre-gravel bike purchase fit. If I had to do it again, I think I would get the fit first. Not that I don't love my aspero, but I did have to make lots of changes to get it to fit me correctly.

How do you feel your road bike or tri bike would fall in the geometry spectrum? Not that these are apples to apples comparisons, but it is not apples to elephants either. If both your bikes are fairly aggressive in nature and you like that (or the other way round), then maybe you have an answer.

Buy the orange one, it is always faster!

I'll let Kevin know that orange bike data.  He'll be pleased.

The Roubaix is more relaxed. Dunno about the tri bike. The fit is not terribly aggressive as the rider is less than bendy.  The Niner is nice in both colors (blue/green) but the Cervelo has some not my favorite color choices.  No light blue bikes here!

I have my eye on ISM for sure. Funny looking saddle, but the reviews are really good.

I did stage 1 this morning, I wanted to start early because I have a bench trial on Friday. This way I have an extra day built in. Every stage has a 50 hour window because of time zones.
Stage one was tough. I had to fight to keep myself from flat lining the last half hour. A short intense ride followed by a long grinding one just destroyed my legs.
The most important thing is you helped a worth while charity. You can dial down the intensity. I didn't know this, but a lot of people ride it at 80-85%. I never realized, until today when I actually read the information, that riding at 100% is considered the nuclear option.

hahaha! One of the first things I learned was I didn’t have to ride it at 100%! You 100% people are crazy (In a good way)! I did the first video of the first day. I sort of bonked on my run today, but was feeling better after lunch so decided to knocked out part of the first day. I know the rides are meant to be done back to back, but my booty is up to so much time on the trainer yet!

Day 2 of the Tour de Sufferlandria in the books. The ride is named Nine Hammers. 58 minutes with a warm up and 9 hard intervals with short rest period between each. It is intentionally set up so you do get enough rest between the intervals and your muscles are constantly being taxed. I felt really good until the 5th interval and then I started to feel fatigue from yesterday's effort.

Amazing work! I thought about doing 9 hammers this afternoon, but decided I'd rather push it off as long as possible!!

Thanks. I'm looking forward to fight club tomorrow. It's one of my favorites. Before you could stream the videos the original fight club was the fist video I bought. I still have the memory stick I downloaded it to.

I am so jealous of you all doing the Tour! (Not at nuclear, though). It was in my plant his years, before my body fell apart. I still have DVDs of several of the old sufferfest videos. I keep them "just in case". Have fun!

Hanging in there! I thought that my Keep On Moving would be blown by all weekend rain but Zoe and I did it!

This week is the 12 hours challenge with Endurance Nation (free, feel free to join us!). That should keep me out of trouble!

My JoGo has pretty much been a NoGo! Not getting in the strength stuff as I would like. On the plus side I have been stretching after my workouts, so that's a little something

No real news.  We might have to postpone but we are going to wait until the last minute because you can't un-postpone an event. We know that you want longer lead time.  There is going to be uncertainty. "All any of us can do is stay mentally and physically strong."

That was a whole lot of nothing! I do realize that they are in a tough position bc they already lost over a year of races (though they had all our money!) and don't want to lose another year, but seems we could get more information than this.

OMG I was like "is he filming this in Japan during the earthquake the other day?!" I can't believe no one on his team suggested a re-do because that was wildly distracting. And yeah, a total non-message message

Well his message makes me feel pretty secure that IMOK will go in May. I looked at their restrictions, if you want to call them that and they are nothing compared to what I am used to. We rented an air B&B, so we can make our own food. Michelle and Sophia have been vaccinated. Hopefully I will be by then.
