fattyfatfat - 2010-06-25 4:45 PM just had a bit of a scare.  running along a path by some river lightening rolled in.  was 1.5 miles from the car.  about a mile from nearest shelter. trail was through tall trees then out in the open then back in tall trees.  i high tailed it to the shelter.

what should i have done?  i was amazed that people were still running and riding while the cannons were going off all around.

Stop, drop, and roll...  wait, I think that is for something else...  seriously, you did the right thing...

Kyla... Endurolytes, and Thermolytes.... Same thing  whichever you find 1st will be fine.  Give them a whirl tomorrow, but you should have no "issue's" taking them.

Great to meet Kyla this morning....recognized her immediately!!  We had a great swim.  The CdA thread has a photo of a bunch of us at this morning's swim.  It is heating up....my solution is to not think about it.  And hydrate.  lots!

Congrats on the sign-up, John - woooo!  IMTexas just SOUNDS hot!!!  Cool

A Huge Good Luck to Linda and Kyla.  I excited to for you.  Good luck to all the other racers this weekend.

So John you're going for the Woodlands.  Cool I'd join you but I think I might need a bit more time to be in ironman shape.

I have been working on my yard to get my home in shape to sell.  And a branch from a tree I was trimming hit me on my arm just above my wrist.  I have a pretty good sized bruise.  I'm hoping it feels better on Sunday than it does today or I'll have a painful swim.

We rarely get lightening so I'll refrain from comment. I'm pretty sure my weather god, Cliff Mass, has covered what to do (cliffmass.blogspot.com if you wanna go and search it out!).

LOVED meeting Linda and Jeff this morning!! Very nice peeps, great vibe, awesome. Hope to see them again before the race but it's like a little city so you don't exactly run into folks. I did run into a teammate today, so that was fun.

Checked in, tried to do the expo, manned a meltown/blood sugar crash by Thing 1, got him fed, gave him a huge "this is my weekend to be selfish so help me out here -- and how many of your friends will EVER go see their mom do an Ironman, huh? please try to soak in the experience" pep talk, and then did the expo successfully (and kids/hubs made signs for me -- so cute!!).

Now I'm just fretting about the forecast... which is HOT (by my standards), in the 80's on race day.

Soooo, REAL QUESTION!!

I'm trying to research and make decisions on sodium intake on race day. I don't want to go overboard but I don't want to end up in a danger situation. Birdy suggested picking up some Thermolytes, which I didn't find at the expo but I'm sure I can find at a bike shop tomorrow. I use Infinit, but not with a high electrolyte concentration as I'm not a huge sweater. I use Nuun, so I figure I'll add some of that to my Infinit and in my water -- easy to drop in. I brought my margarita shot bloks which are higher in sodium. I have no idea about my sweat rate or anything else. Heat is not something I have been able to train for this year AT ALL... so it is what it is. The temps will hit their highs about half-way into my run... at least w/o being on a bike it's easier to take in things at the aid stations.

And here I made sure to bring along arm warmers and a rain jacket just in case...  Ha ha!!!

Dave (hubs) is IN LOVE with Idaho. At least this part of it. Really cute -- he just thinks it's gorgeous, perfect weather, good vibe, etc. I told him tomorrow I'd drive him up around Hayden Lake and the area of the former white supremacist compound. Still pretty, of course...!

Loving every minute of being here!! Off for a dinner with my local peeps, then athlete's meeting!

Oh, and WAY TO GO FATTY!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop worrying. You'lll be fine. When I went to LS in April, it was smokin hot by my April standards. Just stay hydrated. I did the 1/2 ride with Infinit and a few bottles of water from the aid stations.

Yes... Didn't find either of them (only SaltStick tabs?). I figure I can find a run/bike store tomorrow. Or go with what I have been using -- Nuun and Infinit. A friend is putting Fritos in her SN bag. Not a bad idea. I am having issues with my SN bags as I never used anything "special" in training nor did I crave anything consistently. Am not going the Snickers bar route as it will sit out there all day, ick. Might do something like fritos -- nice and salty. As for testing it out tomorrow, might be tricky. Anyway, we'll see how it all goes. I'll make it work (a la Tim Gunn, Kim!).

I had planned to get my 2nd set of bottles on the bike SN but I know they will be hot. Ick!! Will think through my calories and mixing tonight. Might mix up a couple of bottles and see if they'll freeze in the dinky fridge here. At least thawing will help.

Had a lovely dinner with my team at a "compound" that a friend has about 30 miles out of town, but on the lake (other side). GORGEOUS!!! Had pasta and talked race with peeps. Missed the athlete's meeting b/c it was over within 10 minutes of starting. So clearly I didn't miss much.

Night, all!

Night, all!

The athlete meeting started early.  You still didn't miss much.  Big emphasis on no peeing or pooping in public.  Lake temp is 61.  Don't cut corners.  Stay to the right.  Share the road.  Pay attention to the no pass zone, and slow signs. Have fun!  Dinner STUNK.  Went out after and ate at Icon.

Good thing you told me that, as cuz, well, ... !! Ha ha!!!

Was telling Steve that on the way up, my daughter said, "Mom, you can't pee your pants in this race because you have those fancy tires on your bike!! They're not even yours and you CANNOT pee on them!"

Smart girl, that one. Me thinks peeing on the bike in 80 degrees would be icky. So Steve, your tires are safe!!

Have a great day Linda! We might steal your idea and take the kids to see Toy Story 3 after I get my gear all checked in.

Fun for Fats to meet Steve! Yay!!

OK, bike checked out good. Run checked out good -- it's hot!! Ran to the local tri shop and got my "salt lick" as Dave is calling it. Too funny. Stopped on my way into the hotel and talked to some weathered-looking dudes and asked them newbie questions. They were very sweet. Don't have to drop off SN bags today -- yay -- so I can keep my drinks frozen. Woot! Just transition bags today, and they said we'll also have access to them tomorrow. Good answers as it was stressing me out (I'm anal and a bit high-strung so I will always find something to stress out about, usually inane and irrelevant stuff but that's how I roll).

Funny: Dave keep seeing people with aero helmets and keeps saying, "Why don't you have one of those? They look really cool! You should get one..." I keep reminding him how much they cost, and he keeps saying, "Why don't you have one of those, again???" LOL!!

Happy Saturday everyone!!! Hope other racers are having great races and race-preps!!

Linda, what are you up to?

John, did you guys have gourmet coffee with Steve?  He is quite the gourmand.  and apparently a young whippersnapper from the sound of it!  Steve-can't wait til you come out for Vineman.

Kyla-Toy Story 3 sounds awesome, just prepare with kleenex in your pockets!!! (or so I've heard).

Good luck CdA racers!

I just picked up my packet for tomorrow's race. This is really the first timke I have had to think about the race. Normally I get nervous during the week before, but there has been no time. It is going to be hot, but at least I should be done by 8:30 AM.

I have to go tune up the bike in the next hour or so.

Good luck Doug and all the other racers this weekend!

Just talked to Sam, she is in Charlottesville for her race tomorrow.  The hotel she and a friend are staying at hasn't had power since Thursday, and there isn't anything available close so they are stuck at a hotel with no power...

Doing the Mr. Mom thing, so the kids and I just ordered Pizza and are making a tent in the living room and camping out tonight.

Totally cried!! In fact -- funny but true!! -- in the car on the way there, I told my kids I heard it was sad, and my daughter said, "because Andy grows up and doesn't love his toys anymore?" and... Yeah, I cried. In the car. On the way to the movie. My son loves to razz me over my sap-factor.

Jealous of your sushi, Linda. It makes my tummy do flips so no sushi for me tonight. Was gonna eat pasta at the hotel but opted for cheese pizza with the kids instead. My iron gut has had plenty of pizza before long workouts -- a side-effect of me not cooking as often when I was training big. I'm so excited to have a big day tomorrow and not have real life at the end to worry about. Funny, huh? Got some good peeps near me on the bike (the cougar racks!) -- Linda, plus a friend from training camp. Friend is a good swimmer too, so she and I are gonna make our way to the start together and try to get our pole position. Wish I could figure out a way to bring my camera along in the morning, but I want Dave to have it and don't want to worry about losing it.

Got my SN bags figured out. For my big SN "splurges" I went with Fritos and Red Bull. Ha ha. The only time in my life I've had a Red Bull was at my 20-year college reunion when I was trying to rally to stay up late three nights in a row. LOL. I'm sure I won't eat these things but at least now I can say they were there. Also have some Tums, endurolytes, tube, Luna bar, Gu chomps, sunscreen, long-sleeved tech shirt (even though it's hot what if I get some weird chill on the run?)... It's all good!!

WEIRD FEELING ditching bike and gear bags. Very unsettling. Standing joke is "Oh ! I forgot my running shoes!"

Hope to get to bed early. Am taking the earliest shuttle to the race from my hotel (leaving at 4:30) so I can get there right when transition opens. Being anal about being on time/early relaxes me tremendously.

Night, folks! Love you all!!

Thought about it but didn't feel like dealing.... So I'll take mental pictures. Or maybe Linda will have hers along.

Oh, and IM numbers are by age and gender. So Linda and I, being closer in age, are fairly close to one another. Another girlfriend is a 40-something so she's on my rack too. Meanwhile, my guy friends are in the 800's and 900's, so we have to work harder to run into each other tomorrow.

Sap factor again... My 10-year-old just gave me a big pep talk and good luck wishes. What a sweetheart. (wiping tears)
