Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() gdctex - 2010-03-14 8:47 AM Hey everyone, I have been out of pocket the last few days.....traveling and fighting the 'crud'. Been dealing with it for a week now and not letting it impact training...until yesterday when it knocked me over. I am better today, but really feeling frustrated about lost training and upcoming travel that will make training even harder.....sigh, I would never had thought I would long to get to the gym, on the bike, into the pool or just get out and do something. Definitely a lifestyle change for me..... Anyway, reading all the posts, looks like several are having to deal with bumps in the road and such. Glad to see that all are on the mend, and with a bit of humor and wit to go with it. It does help smooth out the bumps. I know *exactly* how you feel. I had a cold, then I had a severe sinus headache/pressure, THEN it developed into bronchitis. I lost about 4 valuable training days within 2 weeks, and missed the swimming for over a week. My run suffered a little bit. While I'm not looking to make any fireworks with my times for my first Tri, finishing is what matters to me at this point. :-) We all have been there, and we all aren't alone. :-) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Training Question I had a bit of a miserable run on Sunday due to a painful side stitch. From what I read online, it's because of the way the liver bounces with the diaphragm or whatever. Best way to do is to breath when you land on your left foot. No matter what I tried to do, I still had a severe side stitch. Does anyone have any tricks of the trade on how I can get rid of this quickly? My legs and breathing felt great, but the pain was just way too much. Thanks for any tips. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congratulations Janet! 3.5 minutes on a 7k is HUGE! Way to go!!!! I had a nice relaxing weekend with the family. My youngest is in Kalispell doing hometown recruiting. So, I've been staying with our daughters in Kalispell while Gary's been working in The Dalles. He took the train up for the weekend and we all went to Hot Springs, MT and soaked and swam in the pools. I'm so happy to have some mobility back thanks to "the boot". I can finally get around and do stuff again even if it's not "training". I'm not sure how swimming is going to work out though since my foot did get really achey while casually swimming at Hot Springs. I'm going to try out lap swimming tonight and see how it goes. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm sad to report this...I'm going to cut my Tour de Cure ADA ride to 50k instead of 100k. It's not a race, but a charity ride. I'm a bit bummed because this would have been my longest ride, but because I have had the lack of training with endurance for longer rides than 30 miles (no thanks to the damn cold), and within the next 2 weeks, I will be unable to do any longer than 20-25 miles due to school projects, finals, etc. As much as I'm looking forward to this, but I seriously have learned my lesson from my previous mistake. Jumping from 32 (longest ride prior to 51), to 51 within 2 weeks, and rode up one of the toughest courses in Las Vegas. I really wrecked my back because of this. The ADA ride course is really hilly, and knowing from my previous mistake, I don't think I'm physically ready. I'm still going to have a lot of fun!! Doing the 50k seems less scarier to me than the 100k. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SSMinnow Today was one of those days....you have a swim workout and you think there is no way in HE*& you can do it. Me doing Max efforts is crazy, but off to the pool I go to give it a go. Guess what? I did it....I achieved something that three months ago, I never would have attempted. I learned even I can have different paces in swimming and while I am not going to set the world on fire with my blazing speed, I can be faster. A really good way to end a Friday. So for those who might be doubting their ability today, don't. Amazing things can happen if you really put your mind to it. WTG Suzy!!!!! :-) |

This should open up your diaphragm and allow youe lungs to draw in more air. |

When I start feeling a cramp coming on, I typically change my breathing pattern. Most time for me this means slowing my breathing rate down some with deeper breaths. I have had to stop for a really bad stitch but typically this does not happen...usually I can breathe my way through it. |

Or do I need to stop to do this? Side stitches typically come on because you breathe the exact same way when your left or right foot falls (eg. you always exhale when your right foot lands). They can also come on if you do a lot of downhill running or eating too close to running. The easiest way to get rid of them is to walk and breathe deeply until it subsides. If you are in a race and can't stand the thought of walking you can try Trevor's method. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You can rise above them, but it isn't very fun..... PS Let me ask you one other thing. Which side was the stitch on? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() CyborgQueen - 2010-03-15 12:00 PM Training Question I had a bit of a miserable run on Sunday due to a painful side stitch. Similar to other answers: I find that if I slow my pace slightly and exhale hard on the opposite side (stitch on the left hand side, exhale hard when your right foot strikes, or vice versa) for several strides, it can help. |

With that said, I have decided that this is the year for my first marathon ~ Bellingham Bay in September! ![]() Oooooh fun, Michelle!!! I ran the half the first year they did the marathon. I wasn't trained at all and ran it with a friend who wasn't really a runner to help her finish. We had a great time. I don't know if it was the particular day but the one thing I remember is a ton of wind the last few miles. I hate wind!! But it was beautiful. Bellingham is so lovely! Yeah, I'm pretty excited about moving there. I lived in the Tacoma area before but northern WA is sooooo much better IMO! I will have to get used to that wind and rain again though! ![]() Edited by Happychick 2010-03-15 6:41 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Back from the post-op follow up. The surgeon said she I did the right thing by doing surgery on my wrist as she got in there it looked as many of the troubled cases do down the road, so i am happy I went through with it. Put me in a removable splint deal so I can shower etc and removed the stitches. She gave me the clear to bike (pretty much only on the trainer where I can take some of the pressure off that arm, and run. Swimming is out for another 3 weeks. I go back in a month to see how it progresses. Hopefully mid April I get cleared to start doing some more activity and will make the march 1st tri. Finally I did an easy run tonight as we have been blessed with some great weather. Did 3.5 miles at 8:50 pace. The catch... I did it barefoot in my Vibrams. My calfs are a tad sore, but that is come to expect. I have one spot they rubbed on my right foot that is ever so slightly sore, but I was amazed how good it felt, and I did not even feel close to having any knee pain. Looking forward to some more runs with these along with the ChiRunning book to see if I can ditch my IT band issues. |

I am pretty sure doing too much too soon because it felt so great to run in the VFFs is where my stress fracture began. Be particularly cautious on running downhills. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the VFFs and will VERY gradually work up to running in them again once I'm healed, but it does take your muscles, tendons, and bones some time to get strong enough to run without shoes. |

Haven't went back and read all the posts since the last time I posted - so if I'm missing something really important and not acknowledging it, please forgive me.

My training is going decently. Diet, not so much. I'm not gaining weight, just losing it very slowly. I need to know cutoff times for each leg. Anyone know these? I'm pretty confident with the swim/bike, but I'm certainly worried about the run portion. Any advice?
|

I purposefully breathe in odd numbers (i.e. I exhale for 3 strikes, inhale for 2) to prevent this. (Although when I'm working my tail off I change my breathing to 2 strikes for the exhale). And yeah, if I get one I just push really hard on the area, usually while I'm still running, and I take some nice, long, slow breaths in and out. |
