Toyota FJ - totally impractical if you don't do a lot of off roading, I can justify it by saying we need it to get to remote beaches.

Acura RSX Type S

24mpg in daily driving, 0-60 in 6, and carries two bikes and a decent amount of gear (with the hitch mounted rack).

What's not to love?

$35K sticker price.

08 Jeep Patriot, love it! She now has bike roof racks, a Thule cargo box  and a hitch mounted bike rack, looks great, carries EVERYTHING and gets amazing mileage.

'99 Chevy Metro 3-cylinder hatchback.

Averaging 40-43 mpg per tank AND the back back seat folds down which lets me throw my bike in the back easily with just taking off the front wheel.  Have to drive it like an old man so as not to trash the tiny engine.

The Xterra sits in the driveway. At 17mpg, I can't afford to drive it.

Volvo XC90. The Volvo is a great all around vehicle as it gets descent mileage for an SUV and is pretty roomy inside (seats 7). Volvo also makes an internal bike rack that fits in the cargo area with the seats down.

Saab 93 Convertible....

NOT recommended for a triathlete! I have a trunk mounted rack that is a pain to put on and stabilize and there isn't a ton of room...

But it sure is cute!

Ford Escape SLT, 4-cylinder 5-speed, on demand 4WD. Gets about 25 mpg, which isn't bad, but it could better.

2007 Toyota Matrix-LOVE LOVE LOVE my car! I can put my bike in the back without taking tire off, plus can fit every other piece of gear that I may need inside. The split rear seats fold down totally flat. Plus the front passanger seat folds down flat as well-or to the other direction can seat 5.

98 Land Rover Discovery
80K miles

Plenty of head room for tall peeps and bike fits inside pretty good. It is about as reliable as I am, so I can't complain.

07 Honda Pilot
It's on the other end of the reliable spectrum, Wife and son love it.

Pontiac Vibe (which is essentially a Toyota Matrix with a roof rack).

Love it alot...station-wagon-style flat cargo compartment with asymmetrical split back seats and tie-downs just rocks. Besides bike fitting inside laying down with wheels on, I was able to transport my bike to my HIM this summer upright in the back (making more room for gear and luggage) with front wheel and seat off. Great for tossing wet gear into...hard-clad cargo compartment, no carpet. 28 city, 32 hwy.

I have an acura integra. I love it, it reminds me of my first car (Ford probe). Although it's 2 door and sporty, it has a surprising amount of space for hauling around my TRI gear.

I hate putting my bike on a rack, I'm paranoid that it will fall off, get banged up or I'll get rear-ended. My Acura has a hatch back and the back seat folds down so it's really easy to get my bike in and out of the trunk.

kmill23 - 2008-09-19 11:05 AM This is a helpful thread.  Bringing up some I haven't even thought of, Chevy HHR, I hadn't considered.  I looked at the TrailBlazer, not sure how much I like it though.

I have a Chevy Cobalt 4 door sedan.  Same under pinnings as the HHR. Actually the HHR is built on the cobalt chassis....... top hatting is what they call it.  It's a 4 cylinder with automatic.

Any way, I fold the rear seat down and fit my bike in without the front wheel.  Lots of room for all the other gear too.  I can get 35+ mpg on the highway with careful driving.  Average around 27-29 mpg depending on traffic.  It has a 50-49 front to rear weight ratio, so it has sports car like handling.  Well, as good as a cheap sedan can get.

Actually knock 10k off the number you quoted and you are there (new sticker was 24k and change).  It isn't in production anymore, last model was 2006 (my year).  You can get a 2006 with 36k miles on it for less then 20 now though.

Just bot BMW '01 BMW 525i specifically for the small engine..Roof Rack for the bikes(which is a total pain as it won't fit into my office's parking deck). Car has something called PermaShield finish and looks like it was just waxed all the time.

SAAB '98 9000cse which is the most utilitarian car I have ever owned..The hatch is really practical..Hitch mounted bike rack - much preferred.

*2. I posted when I was looking for a new car and the Matrix was suggested. I LOVE that car. Need to add that the back of the seats and the trunk are plastic so they won't get ruined by dirty gear or bike chains.

Edited to add - my mom's kayak fits better in my matrix then it does in her Rav4. Actually, it doesn't fit in her Rav4 but it does fit in my matrix.

Subaru Forester ('04, but they just did a sweet revision).  It gets good mileage, good in snow, very reliable, and I can put my bike on the rack, or fit it in the back (with wheels on), along with all of my other junk.

1986 Porsche 911 Carerra.

You can get a bike rack on almost any car, so why drive a boring crappy car unless you wish to for some other reason?
