Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ANNNNNNND.... we just push my childbearing years back by about another decade. Yowch! MomX3 - 2005-11-28 2:18 PM Tri-related - nothing too tough yet. Toughest moment - having my big-headed 8 pound 11 ounce boy with no drugs. Even if I live to run an IM I don't know if I will ever feel that tough again! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The toughest triathlon-related thing I've done was my very first tri two years ago, done on a dare with a whole two weeks of training. Thought I was going to die several times along the way, but somehow made it to the end through sheer determination and the fear of public humiliation. I overcame a huge psychological hurdle that day, and finishing races has never been an issue with me since. If you were to ask my wife, most of the things I do which I think are tough, she clearly sees as stupid - and she seldom misses the opportunity to remind me of that fact. Mark |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess the toughest thing I've ever done (that is remotely tri related) is: after a month in a hospital, I went for a walk. I went a block and then had to call someone to pick me up. A little while later, I went for another walk. And then another, and another. I had gone from being a professional athlete (ballet dancer) to 30 pounds underweight and unable to walk around the block. It really sucked, and was oppressively humbling. 6 months after just trying to walk, I tried to run a little bit. It's seems stupid now. I mean, it was 10 minutes of walking with like, 30 seconds of running. But at the time, I felt very tough. |

Mine was 9 lbs 10.5 oz and took 36 hours to get his bad self born. I also did a 100 km (~62 miles) race through the mountains, part of it in the dark in subzero temperatures. The whole time I kept thinking, "This is a piece of cake compared to childbirth." I lost several toenails afterward. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I guess trying to finish my second tri ever with a blood sugar > 400. I didn't wear my insulin pump...I felt like I was going to hurl the whole time but I thought it was just heat/exertion. Nope, definitely betes. I've kinda had to trial and error the betes and tri combo, but it's never stopped me from finishing, just made it very tough in the interim. |

The Original ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I failed to mention that besides enduring painful blistering and chaffing from running, I felt tough when I went to India. Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went for a 12 mile run. nice weather out. In the mid 40's. Good running weather. Shorts, longsleeve t-shirt and a hat. little did I realize that in the next hour temp would drop by 20 defrees, start snowing,. Soooo cold. Someone actually stopped and asked if I needed a ride. Stupid me I didn't accept. Well I did only have 3.5 miles left. Edited by hoff1732 2005-11-28 1:58 PM |

I was lucky mine didn't wait for his due date - he was that 8-11 and he was 3 weeks early! My second was 10-1 the day before she was due. I was only half-tough with her because I tried natural for about 7 hours before the midwife said epidural or c-section. I took the epidural and then finished up in much less pain! |

Three days after surgery (two years ago last week), I walked half a mile on Thanksgiving Day. It took me several pounds gained and many months later to even try to start running again. And it was a really painful, almost baby walk. As far as other toughness, like Janelle I went on a mission trip, only mine was to Mexico City. I didn't know anybody before I got there - but it was awesome! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well I don't know if these things are tough but this what comes to mind... 1) I was deep sea fishing when i was about 11 or 12. I reeled in an amberjack that weighed 10 pounds more than I did. There was no chair to strap me into so one of the crew would hold me down by the shoulders whenever I started to go in...and I was throwing up the whole time since I was horribly sea-sick. 2) I have had 3 children with no pain meds, but I was on pitocin (ie, more painful than natural) for all of them. Their weights were 8#, 9#, and 9# 11 oz. 3) I did a 1.5 mi ocean swim this summer...My suit was a little big and my ample bossom came out from all directions everytime I tried to do freestyle so I did the whole thing breaststroke. I was so slow that I was out in the ocean with no one in sight for about 1:30. At one point a shrimp boat that was fishing was headed straight for me. A school of bait swam around me and one into my suit. By the end my nipples were bleeding profusely...I was last but I finished! 4) Speaking of being last...I am a very competitive Type A sorta person (hmmm, that means triathlete, right). That being said...I am very obese, I have had 14 knee operations, I live with chronic pain, and I have been DFL in EVERY SINGLE race I have ever been in!! Just to register and show up each time for a race knowing that, realistically, I will be DFL in my book is tough because it mentally just kills me every time. But man do I love tris!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oliveview-that is tough as hell! And enough talk of toughness about giving birth. We can't scare the younger girls....must trick them into joining our sick club. I did have drugs and it was still hard....but not NEARLY as hard as the weeks/years/months after giving birth. Childbirth has a time limit, mothering does not. (OplCommandServlet[10].jpg) Attachments ---------------- OplCommandServlet[10].jpg (30KB - 38 downloads) |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think my toughest moment happened in my first triathlon. It had rained earlier that morning and the humidity stayed in the air, so the roads remained a little damp throughout the remainder of the morning and during the race. The bike portion of the triathlon was a 17 mile bike. I crested a hill at about mile 12 and then went down the long slope of the downhill and was preparing to make a 90 degree right hand turn at the bottom of the hill. Two volunteers were standing about 8 yards from the turn where you either needed to turn right in front of them or go around them. (ill placed volunteers if you asked me) So I decided to turn in front of them. I hadn't slowed down as much as I should have with the wet pavement, and slid I went on my right side. I got right back up on the bike, put the chain back on and as I was riding I noticed that I had a fairly decent sized scratch on the inside of my right elbow. It was bleeding a little bit, but I pushed on and actually smiled as I had never felt so tough before and even said to myself "I feel like she-ra". ![]() I went on and ran a 5K personal best in that triathlon and placed 4th in my age group. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You know, I really didn't think labor was all that bad. Actually, I would have more babies if I could. Labor is addictive to me! There is nothing better in the world than feeling that baby come out of you and the getting to hold and nurse it! Those hormones are a thing to be respected!! LOL The younger ladies here should not fear labor, it can be one of the most intense experiences of your life... Sorry to hijack...I'll stop with the baby talk now |

Coach ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I haven’t done many tough things related to Tris or anything as I am medically diagnosed to be ALLERGIC TO PAIN However, for my 1st HIM my parents came to see me race for the 1st time and 2 days before the race a developed tendonitis on my left ankle. Biking was a bit painful and running was VERY painful so I wasn’t able to run at all. The day before the race I went to the MD and he gave me medication (pain killers) and strongly recommended to skip the race and rest for a week (yeah right!) I rest all day, popping those pills like candy, icing and massaging my ankle. 1st thing next morning I took another pill and brought a couple to the race: one for the bike and one for the run. I ended up having just one before the run and I was able to run and finish the race pretty strong…God bless those pills |
