I am about a 2:00/100 swimmer in a non-wetsuit/non-seawater swim. Not sure if anything short of a nice thick wetsuit would help me. Just curious. The swim does seem to rank highest on my kona worry list. Just barely above the run, and then #3, the bike. =) Brian Brian, I believe a speedsuit really helps a weaker swimmer more than it does a strong swimmer. A stronger swimmer is usually already in a better swim position and has better form. As an average swimmer myself, I'll take any help I can get so I'll be using whatever becomes legal for Kona. A wetsuit makes me at least 10 seconds per 100 faster and a speedsuit 5 seconds per 100 faster so even a 2-3 second improvement is worth it to me. Honestly, I would be shocked if a speedsuit added anymore benefit beyond 1-2 seconds per 100 at the most for any swimmer regardless of ability. The only advantage thye provide is hydrodynamic, the reduce the amount of "drag" of water against our skin or traditional trisuit. They do not provide any flotation benefit, so they are very different from a wet suit. I really wouldn't worry too much, a speedsuit doesn't appreciabley make a swim easier. |

Extreme Veteran 492 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman World Championship : Official Thread Last 3 weeks have been 16, 17, and 13.5 hours of training and this week will be 15.5. Usually in the range of 140 - 180 miles per week on bike, ~30+ on the run, and usually around 11k swim. My bike and swim feel great. I'm not sure what's happening with my run as I don't feel as good as I did pre-IMSG yet. I'm hoping the heat has a lot do with that. Travelling next week so the plan is to have an easier recovery week and then after that my coach told me to prepare for hell before I hit taper. |

Extreme Veteran 408 Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman World Championship : Official Thread Wow. Great job guys! I had my first run tonight since Cda. Not too bad. My leg was really tight but it was only uncomfortable not painful. Hopefully this is the start some quality running. |

Extreme Veteran 408 Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman World Championship : Official Thread Just wanted to let you guys know that De Soto has a legal swimskin. Its the 2011 speedfoil and its actually cheaper than the 2010 model at $190. As far as I know its the only one. I'm not sure how much difference it will make without rubberized material. |

Master 1920 Ann Arbor, MI | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman World Championship : Official Thread I am IN for Kona!!! Got my slot at LP. So how long until I'm recovered from LP? The race was Sunday, so I couldn't walk on Monday, but by Tuesday I could almost handle stairs. Wednesday was no problem and on Thursday, I hiked 5 miles with 2000 feet of climbing. The only time my legs complained was coming down the mountain- but not until we only had about 1/2 mile left. Since then, my legs have felt completely normal, but I haven't worked out yet. What have you guys experienced for recovery after your IM? This was my first IM, so I have no idea what to expect from my body! |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman World Championship : Official Thread Recovery get's easier the more you do them. I was pretty banged up after IMAZ in 2007 but felt better after Kona that year (getting loaded on rum drinks in Maui also helped!). Last year after IMAZ I felt great next day. You can start doing some very easy running later this week, stay in the pool, and start getting back your bike mileage. You get another few days of a pass but it's time to start putting in some work to hold on to that fitness. |

This was my first IM, so I have no idea what to expect from my body! Congratulations! I was running, riding, and swimming a few days after St George. All at a very leisurely pace. My coach told me he actually wanted me to go VERY easy a few weeks and lose a little fitness so we could build it up. I don't think you'll have that luxury with Kona coming up quickly. |

Member 10 Tampa, FL | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman World Championship : Official Thread Another flatlander from Florida asking about the hills. For anyone who has a power meter and has done this race (or any similarly hilly IM for that matter)...what is the best racing strategy for this type of hills using watts? Do you try to hold a similar wattage the entire race? Or allow a certain % increase on the hills and decrease on the descents? |

Expert 1145 Ann Arbor, MI | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman World Championship : Official Thread I'm going to be there cheering on my speedy wife, Alaina (jazz82482), and I want to know if it's possible for spectators to get to other parts of the bike and/or run course to cheer their athletes on during the race, or if the alternate roads are impassible due to traffic/road closures/time constraints/etc. Otherwise, I'll be the guy with the cowboy hat, beach chair, and double-fisted vodka martinis near the transition area screaming his head off for 11+ hours. |

Do you try to hold a similar wattage the entire race? Or allow a certain % increase on the hills and decrease on the descents? The issue won't be the hills as much as the wind. MapMyRide has several Kona bike profiles listed. I guess everything depends on perspective because I view this as a flat bike and run course. The wind could be demoralizing though. |

Member 33 Milwaukee | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman World Championship : Official Thread Hey all! Just accepted my rolldown spot for Kona at Ironman Louisville yesterday. I'm coming to Hawaii! It was a hot day, but training in the heat paid off. As I crossed the finish line, I was tailing a fellow ag'er the whole marathon, but with the time trial start in L'Ville I knew he had be beat, because I was ~20th into the water and didn't see him in line on the docks. As we donned our medals and walked out of the finish chute, he told me he already had a spot from Eagleman. Incessant checking of the online tracker revealed that I came in 5th, and I was a nervous mess waiting for rolldown. I'm going to look into renting a bike out of HI (if there are any left) rather than fly with mine from Milwaukee, WI. Let the hunt for flights and condos begin! Not much time remains, so I'm quickly looking for a place to stay on a college kid's budget. Healing well, celebrating in good company, and chomping at the bit to race again! |

Congratulations and welcome to the party. I'm not sure how much a bike rental costs but are you sure that's the route to take. I'm not sure I'd want my first ride on a different bike to be at Kona. C'mon, you're a college kid, call the parents and tell them to send money. |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Ford Ironman World Championship : Official Thread Just a FYI. My friend and manager of FastSplits tri store in Newton, MA heading to Kona in case you need top notch bike mechanic services. He is a very good bike mechanic and a very nice guy. Info: If you or any of your athletes are interested in my services let me know. The current plan is:
If needed I will be available for other issues that may pop up with your bike, including having some parts or getting the parts you need from a shop. The goal of this is to eliminate the head ache of dealing with the local shop lines/3 day wait periods they have plus the random mechanics they may have working there. I will be working from a central location (probably on Alii Drive) and will furnish you all with contact info for me. If interested email Brian at: [email protected] for prices and more info. (you can tell Jorge give you his info) I will also be available for a per hour fee while I am down there, but people doing the above will have first option on my time. I figured some might find this useful. Only 5 weeks! |

We had good weather and I came out injury free, so feeling good for kona. I did run pretty hard this week and now I am just zapped. Planned on alot of mileage this weekend but seems more like I need to get my strength back. I am so pumped right now. Looking forward to a 2 1/2 to 3 week taper. |
