The number of pitchers having tendon replacements is just horrific. What is the percentage of major league pitchers who have had the Tommy John surgery? What is the percentage who will? TW Speed is not always the cause of damage. Improper mechanics can cause damage below 90. And there have been pitchers above 90 for quite a long time. It is not a new speed. I agree injuries to pitchers are a concern, but the only way a pitch under 90 can be effective is either if you absolutely PAINT the corners or if 86/87 is the speed of your change up and your fastball is at 98. Not sure what can be done about TJ surgery on the whole. |

There are certainly more 90 fastballs in the game today. A lot more. I just think there's too much emphasis on 93-94 mph fastball. If kids don't push themselves to that speed, then they can't pitch in the majors. The strike zone has gotten smaller with electronic monitoring which means the only thing a pitcher can do is throw harder to get outs. I'm more of a purist so I can't say I'm totally behind it. Are we going to have more situations like on opening day where Joe Madden goes out to talk to the ump and stall for time until his bench coach gives him the 'no' signal? |

Fredi Gonzales challenged a call in the Braves first game. He ran right out to make the appeal. The call was overturned in his favor. He was quoted as saying should have waited to get a replay before going out but he pretty sure the call was wrong. They might as well allow a "peek" for the manager before making the appeal. It will be a part of the game as the rule is set now. All the managers are setting up their system for getting the preview done quickly. I personally want to see the calls be right. A few baseball calls per game are going to be easier to get right on slow motion replay than on the field. TW

I'm ok with replay and so far they said the average length of getting the call reversed is 1 minute 39 seconds. Fastest one was 58 seconds, slowest was 2:20. However I don't like if a manager comes out slowly, wastes time talking to the ump so he gives his guys looking at the play on TV another 30 seconds to signal down to his bench letting him know if he should challenge or not. I draw the line at balls/strikes though. If they can start challenging that then I'll be upset. |
