I remember eating out with peby's daughter; we split a whole fish and then her eyes popped out when I popped the fish's eyes out and popped them in my mouth. Yum! I still probably have that photo somewhere. She managed to compose herself enough to take a shot of the second eye going in. |

Unripe persimmons aren't that "gross" ... it's just like eating underarm antiperspirant. Okay, I've eaten underarm antiperspirant. From an underarm. Next ... Oh, and Tuna Helper is *really* gross. |

My employer has an office in Manila and I've had to go there twice to conduct training. Because I am the world's least adventurous eater, there was no way in hell I was going to try balut, but the woman I was travelling with did. Good Lord, I thought I was going to hurl, and I wasn't even the one eating it. GROSS. |

![]() | ![]() A banana slug, which was a little less than half-dollar size diameter, and about 3-4" long. Part of our job is to teach people to overcome food aversions. As part of our training, we live in the Olympic national (rain)forest, and a rite of passage is the chewing and eating of the slug. While there is very little taste, the experience is what makes it gross. When you bite the slug, it's defenses automatically release a disgusting, sticky goo, which covers the entire inside of your mouth - teeth, gums, tongue, etc. After a couple of chews, your mouth is caked with slug goo and it is more or less impossible to swallow, but you do what you can. While eating one was the rite of passage, we also live on very little food during our training phases. So when our cadre said they'd give a coke and a pack of M&Ms for whoever ate the most slugs, a couple people took part. One guy ate 28 slugs, and then enjoyed his treats. I'm not sure it would have been worth it. Bon apetit! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I accidently drank somebody's chew spit at a college party a long time ago. The chew spit was in a red solo cup and I set my beer down (which was also in a red solo cup) next to the chew spit cup. A minutes or so later I picked up what I thought was my beer and chugged. Warm chunky chew spit down the hatch. I got sick. I tried to syphon gas from a vehicle "Mad Max" style by sucking on the end of a garden hose I had cut down. I ended up swallowing a lot of gasoline. Not good for my insides. Throat and stomach burned like a SOB. Edited by Iowaman 2012-10-30 7:45 PM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't compete with a lot of the stomach-turning items mentioned already! As a kid though, I remember telling myself, "I like chocolate milk. I like strawberry milk. Why can't I have orange milk?" Yep, stirred the orange juice into a 12 ounce cup of milk. Obviously I didn't stir for too long...proceeded to drink said item...proceeded to say, "That is really bad..." then looked down and saw it all curdling. That sight made it even worse. Kids, don't mix orange juice and milk. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just curious, is "balut" something like the eggs with embryos that I mentioned?? Lest anyone thinks I am prejudiced against Asian food, I should add that one of the most disgusting things I've ever eaten is blue cheese. My mother could testify.....in my whole life, I've eaten it exactly twice! Once as a kid, when forced to try it, and once as an adult because I'd heard your taste buds change and some things you once disliked might be palatable. Not in this case. It's still moldy milk. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() I watched my wife pile a portion of nato (sp?) on her plate in Japan. She's adverterous with food, especially with asian food (not sure if being half filipino has anything to do with that). SO, I just assumed she knew what it was with how she piled it on her plate. Nato is fermented soy beans that turned brown and stick together with what looks like to ME, is about a gallon of mucous. She stuck one spoonful in her mouth and eyes got wide and started to tear up and almost puked after spitting it out. THEN, she got mad at ME for knowing what it was and not telling her? I just figured with the confidence whe was loading it up, she knew. She didn't take just a "sampler", but a big pile of it. Somehow, she made it my fault. You know, to see that reaction, I'll take the blame - it was worth it. Edited by Kido 2012-10-31 11:46 AM |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() Andrew Zimmerman does a show where he eats all of this stuff and enjoys just about everything... But there was one green fruit that smells like stinky feet and has a mucous/slime consistancy that made HIM almost hurl. If he can't handle it, I don't even want to be in the same zip code of it. |

That's gotta be durian, which I pointed out I LOOOOOVE ... except it makes you smell as nasty as it does ... my sister and I have to go sneak off in private and furtively eat it in a back alley or something. "Stinky feet" would be a positive way of spinning it. And yes, it is slimy, but even worse, with threads in it. BUT HOT DAMN it tastes good. Seriously. Like ... a really peachy fermented custard. Slurpy sweet amazing good. It's gotta be good for you. It's fruit, right? But even in its rind (not opened)--it will PERMANENTLY stink up any space it's in, and everything in that space. Once that smell is there, nothing in the universe can get rid of it. It's easier to get rid of years-old multi-layered cat pee stink in a shag rug. Which, may I add, would probably be more tolerable. |

Your move Bear Grylls. Shell and all? No I ate him like I would a cooked crawfish. Seperated the tail from the body, pinch the tail and pull out the meat. He got me back with his dieing effort though and pinched the crap out of me. There is a picture of me and my meal on another thread before I ate him. As a disclaimer there was alcohol (copious amounts) involved in the consumption of said animals. |

Nowhere near as gross as durian, though, and as I said, that I love. Come to think of it, raw fermented Thai crab was much, much worse. Not live. No ... waaaaaaay dead. Too dead, for too long, ICK ICK ICK. |

Your right though, it certainly wasn't as bad as I imagine it could be, but it was pretty damn awful. My coworkers had brought it back with them so I am not sure how long it took at customs or whatever. Apparently it was a process. |
