My first little gift was a haircut. The GF is really trying to save money. I heard her saying to her friend how much she needed to get highlights and a haircut because she had not had one in 6 or 8 months and she had so many parties to go to in the next 3 weeks. So I found out what place she normally went to and the person who normally does it. Then I went in and paid for a cut and highlights and had the receptionist call her to set up the appointment.

She will thank you for this every time she warms up her car without having to go outside.  Not romantic at first, but it's a great gift, methinks.

My wife's getting a ping-pong table.  Ha!  Just writing that makes me happy and cracks me up!  I have no idea what that says about me, her, or us.  I don't do jewelry.  I bought her diamond earings once and she returned them to get a steam cleaner for the house.

Hey Lauren,

Aww.  I would if I could but, in one of my rare moments of clarity and brilliance, I did that 33 years ago.  She said yes.  I just meant small package as in "good things come in small packages."  I haven't actually picked anything out.  The table and chairs are an upgrade of some hand-me-downs that we've been using for 20 years or so.

When I was married, my husband kept buying me stereo equipment for birthdays and Christmas. He would ask me what I wanted. I'd say, "go to Victoria's Secret" and then I'd get stereo components which I didn't give a damn about and then I'd end up watching him play with it all Christmas. It finally got to the point where we got into a fight on Christmas Eve because I said, "WHO are you buying these gifts for, you or me?"

So, fast forward a few years and we're in the process of getting a divorce but still having to live in the same house (can you say, "hell"?) Anyway, I decided that I needed to buy a gift for myself. So later that evening, I told the soon-to-be-ex, that I needed to speak to him privately. We were alone in the room and I said, "Remember all those times that I told you that I wanted something from Victoria's Secret and you got me stereo equipment instead?" He nodded yes. Then I opened my robe to reveal my brand new black teddie, garters and stockings and said, "You should have gone to Victoria's Secret." Then I closed my robe and walked out of the room.

The crappy thing is, he kept the stereo! ha!
