I'm running outdoors too.
I don't live in the greatest (i.e. safest) neighbourhood, so this is winter #2 of running with the Running Room.
It's just 3 X per week (with the half marathon group, part of which is also training for ATB), but that's THREE more times than I know I'd run outside if I were running solo.

Embarassed

Give winter running a go! It's actually pretty amazing.

This is my first year of outdoor winter running. Actually, since I only started at the end of May, this is my first winter of running. My plan is to run 3x a week outdoors solo, and if I build up the nerve I might join in on a free Running Room run or two over the winter.

I definitely run as much as possible outdoors though depending on the conditions outside i'll take tempo or speed sessions inside.  Not worth slipping and falling to try to keep specific paces.  Winter running is all about building mental toughness but not about being dumb.  Let conditions set your paces and take it easier on yourself, the snow can be like running in sand which builds a whole different strength. Then when the spring comes you can reap the reward!

Same here, once the snow/ice arrives, I'll do my interval training on the treadmill since they're usually shorter sessions anyhow, and my easy/long runs outside.  I actually like running in colder weather. Seems I can go on forever.

My friend who is running this with me is worried his training isn't coming along as it should. He greatly underestimated 21km distance and told me when we started planning for this event "I can run a 5km, I can do this no problem." Que haphazard random time/distance training sessions.

I should have given him guidance sooner... Anyway, I set him up on a proper training program and picked him up John Stanton's new book Running. We had to move the event date so that he will be ready so I won't be doing the chilly this year. I think I will do it in 2012. For now I am switching over to the Mississauga Half Marathon (May 15) so that he has enough time to prepare.

Good luck at the Chilly everyone!

I am looking forward to my first half too... I committed registration today.  My brother is doing this race (again) and warned me it sells out.

I too have been following a Runners world smartcoach plan.  I am in week six.  I love running outdoors, a few issues with the cold causing me to cough but I am perservering.  I have found this year some workouts have to switch indoors or bleh the dreadmill.

I will be mid/back pack... hand me a water please when I come in!  The last race had empty coolers when I came across the line and I was parched!!!  Just one of those things when you are near the end of the pack!

Maybe some of us will meet up!  Happy training!!

Good job on signing up, sometimes that is the hardest part!  Just remember that everyone gets the same shirt and the same medal!  Finishing is an accomplishment on it's own!

Wise words - the distance you cover is just the same.

While I'm not doing that race, I was planning to do my first 1/2 mary on May 1st in London.  Haven't signed up yet, but have just started a training plan that gives me 5 or 6 weeks to get my base back up after not running much over the last three months.

Went onto the website, but didn't have the parts to push the button.  Signing up is hard to do...should be a song.

Now thinking of doing this race since I have a long 26k run scheduled for that date anyhow, plus it'll give me a good warmup for the ATB 30k.  I can also try & beat my 1:54:25 PB....maybe a 1:53

That's true..lol.

I just noticed though, entry is going to be like $90.  That's crazy steep for a half mary IMO considering I paid $45 for my last one and $75 for ATB. Surprised

I hear that Ed Whitlock will be running in the Burlington Chilly HM. For those of you who don't know about Ed, he's a spry 80-year old who does a little running.

This past September Ed ran the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half in 1:34.... He ran a sub-3hr full marathon at 74.  I'm looking forward to getting my @ss kicked in running by a guy who could be my grandfather.

this is it.... I did my last long run on Saturday.  I did 18km so hopefully can get through the last 4km allright...

I plan to finish in 2h30min .. which is a humble goal.  I got most of my SmartCoach training plan in but some snowstorms diverted me to indoor track work at times.  Did lots of cross training with tri at the Y, spin classes, strength classes.

Good luck everybodeeeeee!!!!

Good luck everyone! I'm praying for good weather. Where we are (2.5 hours southwest of Burlington) it is currently pouring rain and windy as heck. I think the rain should turn into scattered flurries for tomorrow, but I'm also really hoping for the wind to die down!

We are just getting the kids packed up now, dropping them off at Gramma and Grampa's, and will then drive up... need to make it by 3 p.m. to get to packet pick up before they close!

Good luck to everyone running this morning!  hopefully the snow (if there is any?) has been cleared.  Down this end of the 403 we have about 10 cm.

I've decided to change my Chiliy 1/2M race strategy a bit - I'll be running on my treadmil this morning.

Good luck to all those brave (crazy) enough to run on this cold, windy, snowy day.

It was great!  I so enjoyed my first half .  It was much warmer then winter training this  year, but the slush and ice was a little tricky to navigate at times...

hope others had a good run too!

I had a great time, too! Not cold at all once we got going, and the snow made it a really pretty run. I finished in 2:10 and some change, which is slower than my last 1/2M five years ago... but given that the conditions were sloppy and I was not as dedicated in my training (a few weeks sick and too chicken to go out in bad weather), I'm happy with it.

Going to take a break from running long distances now... I really feel like training for this length is hard on my body. I don't know how full marathoners do it (let alone people who enter IM!)

I think I could do another IM, but not another marathon.  Just running is so much harder on your body that triathlon.  I got two weeks into training for a marathone in 2009 before I got injured and had to give it up.  Then last year I did an IM and had no problems.

I agree with that, would rather train for and race a half or full Ironman over a half or full marathon
