RIP Mr. Zamerini. He died today at 97. I remember this thread from a few years ago and read the book, which was awesome, Angeline Jolie is making a movie about him which is coming out this December. Hope it is worthy of such a life as his. I was watching something on ET about the movie and how it came to be - apparently AJ and Mr Zamperini lived like just across the road from each other - she was looking at doing the movie, and his contact info was provided to her and she discovered that he was within walking distance/could see his house from hers |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am currently reading "Catch 22." It's not new but it's good. Also working on "The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao." It's a little all over the place, story of an immigrant family, where they come from, and how they make it in NY. Really great so far - about halfway through. I keep attempting Stieg Larsson (The Girl with the ...) books, but I struggle to get into them. I didn't realize Michael Pollan had a new book out, I'll have to check that out!! |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() I got several going right now... Listening to some Stephen King novels on my runs and in the car. Have Game of Thrones on my Ipad. Just bought the remaining Clancy Ryanverse books I was missing. Pulled Paris: The Novel by Edward Rutherford and Stephen Hawkings A brief History of Time and Universe in a Nutshell off the shelf and put it on the coffee table to remind me to get to them.
Since it was mentioned, I have been watching and rewatching many of the good WWII miniseries documentaries. I STILL can't decide if I would have wanted to fight in hedgerows of France (especially when it got cold), the deserts of Northern Africa, or in the Pacific. NONE seemed preferable.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Two non-fiction must-reads are Jim Geraghty's "The Weed Agency". OK, it's fictional, but it's so real it seems like non-fiction. It definitely skews to the political right, but I think most people would have a chuckle. Secondly, everyone in America should read "The Looming Tower" by Lawrence Wright. It's a decidedly non-partisan look at the evolution of Al Qaeda. It's easy to read, entertaining, and historically accurate. I loved it, and I'm giving it props every chance I get. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() And the Mountains Echoed (Khalid Housseini) It's been around a few years (I think), but a great read if you haven't yet. I found a Chinese edition in HK and read it last fall. If it made me bawl even in translation, it's really good! As the Heart Bones Break--Forget the author but it's a Singaporean woman married to a Vietnamese man--very complicated story about several generations of a Vietnamese family. I like books that make me cry, with a lot of history. These fit the bill. Going to look for Unbroken--sounds interesting. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I actually just read my first Steven King novel last week- Apt Pupil. I loved the movie so naturally I wanted to check the book out. Holy crap...If you know how creepy and disturbing the movie is, I can tell you that it's sugar coated compared to the book. I still really liked it, but be forewarned! |

I still really liked it, but be forewarned! As a sidebar, that novella was originally released in 1982 with three others in a great collection called Different Seasons. Two of the other novellas turned out to be the greatest (IMHO) King adaptations to the screen ever: The Body, which became Stand By Me, and (Rita Hayworth and the) Shawshank Redemption. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Recommend "The Goldfinch" by Tartt. IMO definitely deserved the Pulitzer. Will read "Unbroken" before the movie comes out. I have faith that the movie will do his life justice, but still want to read the book first. |

I tried to read these several times and never got very far, but the audiobooks (narrated by Simon Vance) were great - i think I ended up listening to all three within a month - I literally sat in the car after I got to work one morning for like 15 minutes to finish up a section |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll second the Vince Flynn and Brad Thor recommendations Mitch Rapp and Scot Harvath are two BAMFs. To that I will add Ben Coes, his BAMF is Dewey Andreas. I have also gotten into Clive Cussler, I have read a few of the Oregon File novels, Juan Cabrillo is the star of those novels. I'm starting my first Dirk Pitt this week. All of these are black ops type taking down terrorists. On the real life adventure front, I recently finished Touching the Void. I am also about to start Lone Survivor, I've heard great things about the book. |

i am DEVOURING wild: from lost to found on the pacific crest trail. this book is awesome and makes me want to drop everything and backpack. it is a memoir style book about a woman hiking the PCT after losing her mom to cancer. just fantastic. hope the end is as strong as the rest of the book has been. |

I have the JAck Reacher books in the pile - but every time I think about it, I imaging Tom Cruise as Reacher and just have an issue with it...lol That's the problem when a novel series is made a movie. I read the first Jack Reacher novel and the character is nothing like the author described. |

Pretty good ones. Also Alex Berenson is a good author with the John Wells series is really good. |
