Nice tats!  You get points for uniqueness and not slapping on the honda accord of ironman tattoos....not that there is anything wrong with honda accords....but i prefer unique when it comes to ink.

Sadly that color cannot be made into a tattoo ink.  Turns out the human body is allergic.   Perhaps change the school colors to fuchsia or avocado or something?

Stretch marks? GIRL... what are you talking about? The tat looks awesome!

SuzanneS - 2009-08-20 9:11 PM

Almost a year after my first IM, I finally got my Mdot....

I present to you... on my right hip... the TigerMdot, or Pawdot.  Please excuse my stretch marks. I used to weigh 204 lbs.

Alright, yeah, I should probably change the attitude to complete instead of attempt to complete.

I probably could do one next year, but honestly, I would like to enjoy my first Ironman and not make it a 13-14 hour suffer fest where I want to die the entire race. So next year will be just building up the base with a bunch of century rides and like 3-4 marathons.

So, I will spent the entire year planning on a unique way to make the MDOT symbol ink on my body. I also do not know where to get it at; being a dude in the AF only leaves a few options.

The mountain MDOT idea is pretty B.A.; if I could do something similar without copying, that would be sweet!

I know this may prove wildly unpopular but why are you tattooing yourself with a corporate logo? I agree that a 140.6 distance is impressive and a life changing event for some. I guess I just dont get the permanent part. I am not against tattoos but turning yourself into a billboard seems odd. I like Diet Coke but I am not putting a marketing logo on my body.

A tattoo is usually a symbol, and we give meanings to symbols. Therefore people get what they want and give meaning to it as well.

Anyone can drink a diet coke. Hardly anyone can complete an Ironman. If it might be considered a billboard by some, then so be it. I will advertise triathlons for the rest of my life by what I talk about and what I do, so getting a tattoo doesn't change it much.

First, let me state that I have zero ink on my body.  I've just never had anything that I've wanted on me.

That said, there are a few unique things in life which may inspire me to have a permanent mark placed on me.  The IM is probably one of them but just as the OP did, I would look for a unique variation. I find it brilliant because it is defining of her loyalty to her Alma matter and a very unique achievement in life which the majority of the world can only dream about.  Anybody can drink a Diet Coke.  ;-) Not just anyone can complete an IM.

Congrats on completing an Ironman and congrats on your tattoo I like the creativity.

I have a lot of ink on me but no Ironman logo’s, thought about it but I guess it’s just not for me. I do understand someone getting one, takes a lot of work and perseverance to complete the Ironman distance but not necessary athleticism that people claim.

My question is: would it be acceptable for someone to get an IM tattoo if it’s not an Ironman corp. race that they completed?

Geoff

It's a little weird, I guess, but nothing really stops a person who's never done a triathlon from getting a M-Dot tattoo.

If/when I finish an iron-distance race, whatever the brand, I think I'm gonna get just the number 140.6. I like the look of the text, and I like how it's sorta cryptic on its own.

edited for bad analogy

I think Mr.G summed up what I couldnt verbalize- 140.6 is the distance, the kind of race. The M Dot is a brand of that distance. I guess I am more fond of the 140.6 ideal for a tattoo than the corporate logo. The Ironman brand ownership has changed over the years. Hopefully it will always mean the same thing (a triathlon of 140.6 miles). Unless it changes hands again and they start selling "Ironman brand butter" and "Ironman brand adult diapers" (although that isnt a bad idea for cross promotion...)

The 140.6 is a cool idea.  It reminds me of a Marine friend of mine who has the license plate "Five-56".  To most people, it doesn't mean anything but 5.56 mm is the size round fired from an M4.  Something a little obscure like that is pretty cool.  I think there is a little obscurity in the OP's tat as well.

The reason people get the MDot is because Kona is the inspiration for a lot of Ironmen and women. If I hadn't seen Kona on TV years ago, I probably wouldn't even know that Triathlons exist. The MDot serves as a reminder of that inspiration, dedication, and hard work.

Also, even if they start using m-dot to brand Whoppers or cars or whatever, to myself and everyone in my rough age group, we know what the m-dot means, even if 20 years from now they don't.  Since it's a symbol more than a corp logo, I feel anyone who does the 140.6 can use it.

I think what might happen though is more and more people who finish 70.3s will get the m-dot which may "dillute" it's meaning to others.

Edit: Also reminds me of a girl who was going for IMC a few years back. She was so sure she'd do it, she got the tattoo BEFORE the race. I give you three guesses what happened.

Thank you! Clemson is such a huge part of who I am, I really wanted to incorporate it into my ink. I am a 2nd generation tiger and met my husband at Clemson. I have 2 degrees from there, and honestly, if I could retire there I would. So for me, to combine the two.... it's perfect.

Gross!  Shoulda got this instead:

Its starting already!

Ask any USC grad the bird on top is not a chicken. Its a fighting chicken IE a Gamecock!

So Tiger or Chicken?

I voted many years ago!

Clemson Tigers.   I met my wife in the shoeboxes, lived in Johnstone F annex, proposed to my wife behind
Tillman Hall at the door to A Johnstone, graduated in 1981 and carried a Tiger Rag with me while serving in the US Army.  Moved back to SC coast and would not live anywhere else.

Now how long before the big game?
