Very cool news

Surely the shop will be a better place with you in it. (But I think they already knew this)

I suspect working there will have many more benefits beyond discounts, group rides, rubbing elbows with elites etc.

Good On Ya Autumn

yea, like getting to take the park tool 9 hour bike repair workshops...for FREE!!!!

really, i'm guessing you meant the joy of helping people get on a bike...which is something i really will enjoy. i can't say how nice it was to do an interview and be able to be 100% myself, with no bs, and total honesty both ways. this will be such an awesome place to work.

thanks everyone. i'm still a little blown away that the job was even offered (and accepted) today.

ella, who has been the most upset about the idea of me working ('moms don't work!'), despite loving the bike shop (it has a gumball machine), was a little upset when we talked about it after school today. i explained how i wouldn't be working all year, just part of the year, and that it wouldn't be every day, just a couple days...and that seemed to help. she made me a card, totally on her own, that said:

TO MOM
FROM ELLA

DEAR MOM
YOUR A STAR
CONGRAGOLASHONS ON GETING A JOB
LOVE ELLA
P.S. I heart U + UR JOB

Congratulations Autumn! Looks like a nice shop.

(BTW, I organized a figure drawing group for a year or so and never once thought to interview a model before hiring her/him -- wonder what I should have asked?).

Very cool, Congrats!  Are they going to add a "molto veloce mama" link to their site, or just include you in with the others on the "Our Peps" link?

Your mission, if you choose to accept. Get them to start carying tri stuff. I was in there last year to pick up a packet for one of Randy's events and really did like the shop. They seemed to carry very little triathlon things though. Do you think with triathlons growing popularity we can get another bike shop on board? It really does seem like the Twin Cities metro area could support more than just one tri dedicated shop. Gear West is a looooong way from my place.

this topic could take a while to address. many bike shops, including county, have carried tri stuff, tri bikes, and supported races, only to be driven out of the market and out of race support by gear west. the shop i worked at in duluth, twin ports cyclery, has supported brewhouse for 20 years...but last year gear west was brought on and given a much bigger platform than any of the LOCAL shops that have been involved in that LOCAL race for a long time (twin ports and the hut). same thing goes for most of the more established tris here. county supported turtleman for 15 years...until gear west 'stole' it. its a complicated chicken and egg thing. i am not trying to badmouth gear west here. they are a great shop providing a much needed service, but they have taken over the tri scene in a home depot sort of way. home depot had a policy of building close to locally run lumber yards and hardware stores, with the purpose of driving them out of business. i'm not saying that's what gear west is doing...but do they have to support EVERY race? do we want penn and county and erik's and all the other shops to be so turned off to tris that they stop carrying our stuff? i have never stepped foot in gear west for exactly this reason. as a rider and triathlete, i want these other shops involved, because i think it is to our benifit to have a CHOICE when it comes to where we buy our bikes and tri gear.
