And just an FYI. My 300 dollar divers watch is not "water proof". I don't think they use that term anymore for legal reasons. It is "water resistant" to 200 meters.

The level for the 405 is still the 1 meter depth for 30 mins, which is crap

bradword - 2008-01-04 9:20 AM It looks like the 405 is rated the same 'water resistance' as the 305. So in other words, 1 meter for 30 min, or crap. Look like ziplock under the swim cap is here to stay for now.

I wonder since it's smaller if it would be possible to keep it on your wrist and ziplock it up, I might have to go to the scuba store this weekend and see if they have anything that would do that and not having the effect of having a lead weight on the wrist

Yeah – the 305 is probably one of the ugliest watches in the market now – which is part of the appeal if you ask me.  Years from now I’ll pull that thing from a box and show my grandkids what I used to train/race with and we’ll all laugh……

It does look like the screen on the 305 is much larger……

If you think the 305 is ugly, apparently you haven't seen the 201/301

Ack... I love it! Unfortunately I JUST bought the 305... oh well.

Ditto, I'm going to have wait a few years Just in time for Garmin to release the 505 quite possibly.

I'm in the same boat. Lisa just bought me a 305 for christmas but I love it so no big deal. I don't mind the wrist PC thing, keeps my arms stronger from swimming...

I just went from the 201 to the 305 and don't think I could handle the smaller screen just yet.  Let me figure this 305 out for a couple of years then I'll get the 405 just before the 505 comes out....that's how I roll.

The trade off in size is accompanied by less battery life.  The 301 is rated to 13 hours, the 305 to 10 hours and the 405 to only 8 hours.  That may be a factor for people.

It is a LOT better looking than the older models though.

I'll be getting the 405!

Can you use 2 separate heart rate straps with the same watch? Wife and I rarely work out together at the same time and we could each have our own strap with 1 watch.

LOL - the X01 series is like wearing a laptop on your arm.  those to "pretend" to be a watch like the X05's

Maybe I am the only one but I am unimpressed.  I hope they don't retire the 305 in favor of this.  To me this should be a new line of watch (ala Forerunner 50).  The Edge 305 to 705 product path seems well thought out.

This is a downgrade if you ask me: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=142&compare=compare&compareProduct=349&compareProduct=11039

One of the key features for me of the 305 was the ability to put it on a bike and then take it on a run.

To me, I would have taken the 305 as it exists today with the following enhancements:

  • touch screen (maybe a c model for color screen for those that want it)
  • truely water proof
  • mapping
  • longer batter life
  • add power meter

Yeah, this is why the 305s were on fire-sale clearance last year. And I just got one too!

I wonder if the 405 will work with my speed/cadence, foot pod, and HRM strap? Still using the ANT+Sport protocol, but that doesn't mean they will all work together nicely.

I like the bezel instead of the 7 hard-to-push buttons on the 305, but it might be just as hard to use with gloves on.

I really like the auto-sync feature. Just walk into the room with your PC, it detects the watch and syncs automatically. Sweet. Of course, you still need to plug it in to charge it...

Got to agree here, and go one step further: I haven't found a reason yet to upgrade my 301. I don't mind the size, and think it's a great training tool on both the bike and run.

X3 on the upgrades, I doubt I will get one until my 305 dies.  I will say though that my 305 is alot more accurate than my 201 (but the 201 was about 98% accurate to start out with).

I have a 305 and comparing the specs, the 305 wins out. Definitely seems like a downgrade. It is 'prettier' if that is your thing, but that is about it.

I am quite attached to my little iPod thingy.

I will probably wait until it's water proof. Whenever that will be. Maybe the 605. Wink

More thorough link below, looks like you can link to a manual from there and it looks like the foot pod for the 305 may work with the 405.

This is exactly why I love REI's unconditional return policy.
When the 405 comes out, I can return my 301 at full credit and only have to pay the difference!

Now, if I had only bought my road bike from REI. I might be getting an new bike more often.

Is there a time limit on the return policy?? I can't image it being lifetime but what do I know.

The return policy for REI is lifetime for members (a one time $15 fee IIRC)

I bought a Garmin 201 in '04 from REI for $150. You get 10% back in store credit the following year so basically my mebership was free.

Then last spring my 201 started acting up. A friend told me about the REI guarantee. So I took the 201 back, got $150 back and upgraded to a 301 for $50.

This new garmin is definately a downgrade. It has no alerts for your zones, and most importantly, NO MULTISPORT!! To me, that makes it useless for training and racing triathlon. I am going to stick to my 305.
