While I was no big fan of his radio show, Al Franken summed it up best a few years ago (referring to Ann Coulter):

"I feel sorry for her that that's how low she has to go to be in the entertainment business."

And all he had to do was run for Congress.

jmk-brooklyn - 2012-10-24 2:37 PM So, no, he didn't get a letter-- he didn't need one.

Just curious, why?

Because he apologized immediately, before the comment was even aired nationally. So he didn't need for someone to send him a letter or to be called out publicly for his comment before he apologized.

Maybe Coulter will eventually say she misspoke or whatever, and maybe she'll even be sincere about it (doubtful, since I think she's a hateful, soulless harpie), but given that her eventual apology will come after the backlash that followed it, it will always smack of a being a PR move, rather than an actual mea culpa.

So technically, all she has to do is call the director of the Special Olympics and apologize? Is that the answer?

Nope-- too late. The horse has left the barn. Obama apogized immediately-- he didn't wait to see what the public reaction was or before he got called out by the Special Olympics before he called the director personally.

What's depressing is that folks like her (and Mike Savage, etc.) are just actors...they may not even believe in what they are saying, but it gets them air time and keeps them in the limelight.  While I was no big fan of his radio show, Al Franken summed it up best a few years ago (referring to Ann Coulter):

"I feel sorry for her that that's how low she has to go to be in the entertainment business."

Dan

Al Franken... That's like using a Todd Akin comment about Soledad O'Brien.

But seriously, I'm wondering about the Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter point.  It's a good one.  I would almost bet they'll be on the air together tonight on Bill O'Reilly's show talking about this.

But you cannot say "Oh Obama called the head of the Special Olympics, so it's all good."

He also had backup from Arnold Schwartzenegger (national coach of the SO at the time) saying "it's ok, he didn't mean it."

The President should come under a higher level of scruitiny for comments like this than an entertainer who makes a living selling books because she's nasty...

Well of course you think so. If he'd gone to the HQ of the SPecial Olympics and committed hara kiri on their front lawn, you'd wonder why it took him so long, or complain that he left a mess for the groundskeepers to clean up.

Can you explain to me how Coulter should have apologized in advance of a tweet?  Because, you know, I going to take your word that this is the only difference in these two people running off at the mouth.

Nope, I reacted to his comment in the same way I reacted to Coulter's, with the slight difference being he is the President of the United States speaking on network television.

It's not just that he called him-- it's that he called him immediately. I agree 100% that it was in poor taste and that he should know better. He deserves to be judged poorly for having made the comment in the first place. I don't really even put any weight behind the Schwartzenegger comments.
Too often, we complain about politicians saying stupid stuff and then either trying to explain it away or making some lame apology two days later after the s**t has already hit the fan. I don't give him a pass for making the comment, but I think he deserves a certain amount of credit for at least having the presence of mind to recognize that he f-ed up and trying to fix it in a personal way, rather than releasing a comment through a spokesman or whatever.

I am curious to see what, if anything, Palin has to say about it. I'm sure that either she or O'Reilly will bring up Obama's comments.

First of all she won't apologize.....What i havent seen anyone mention is that this is not a one time slip up, she has used that word repeatdly during this election season and has been called on it more than once...She doesnt care.

About a week ago I went and unfollowed all the "entertainers" that I was following on Twitter because I do not care to hear what they are tweeting about, especially their politics.

I also hate to see politicians on any type of talk show, whether it is the View, Daily Show, Colbert Report or SNL. Although I am glad to see they have that much time on their hands to do the talk show circuit.

No one's suggesting she should have apologized in advance of the tweet, but, as she hasn't apologized at all yet, I don't really see what your point is.
My point is that he apologized as soon as he possibly could. She has not. She made the comment Monday and still hasn't said anything resembling an apology. In fact, I believe she used the word "retarded" in a second tweet on Tuesday. Something like, "If [Obama's] the smartest guy in the room, everyone else in the room must be retarded".

But hey, the important thing is that he's Obama and you hate him and she's not. I get it.

Regardless of any other person's actions and the political -for-tat (I realize it's election season) the response was wonderfully written address to an on-going use of a derogatory term that should not be used in this scenario - by someone who is completely impacted by something as simple as a word.

What ever happened to sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me?

This is a tempest in a teapot.

It's often words that hurt the most and cut the deepest and you're right, it's an excellent and beautifully written response to the scenario.

Words are just words, it is the person saying them that gives them impact.  Why is everyone giving people like AC impact.

We're going to have to agree to disagree.

Hurtful words are hurtful, no matter who says them.  They carry emotional impact that can be felt for years longer than any physical pain from sticks and stones.  It's how the person takes in those hurtful words that makes the impact - not necessarily who says them.

The problem here is that Ann Coulter actually thinks it's okay to throw about the word and has done it repeatedly!    This is the sort of word that needs to be unlearned and until people who should know better understand the impact of using it, and stop saying it, they need to be reminded.  Would any of you actually defend her if she called Obama the n-word?  THIS IS NOT DIFFERENT.   Simply, retarded as a derogatory term is still sort of "up and coming."

If a person who is directly impacted by a word tells me I should stop using it, I think I should take them very seriously.

So shall we start a list of all banned words and thoughts and burn all the books that contain them so they no longer contaminate society.  People have been insulting one another since the beginning of language.  They will continue to do so till we are exterminated from the planet.  People in this forum insult others all the time calling them all sorts of things Fat lazy and stupid to name a few and many many laugh and join in the "fun".  You want a world without insults you will have to get rid of human kind.  Why is one insult OK and another is evil?
