Agree with the other poster.  You're not climbing the Alpe d'Huez or anything.  Aero trumps weight on every IM race in N. America.

The climbing at Whistler is not all that sustained with the exception of the 20 miles back from Pemberton to Whistler.  Remember that Whistler to Pemberton is basically 20 miles downhill, followed by a 35 mile flat TT.

IM Canada held the crown as the hardest N. American IM bike course after they nerfed the Cabo course.  That title was very short lived as the Tahoe course was even harder than Whistler.

Ditto to all that

I'm also interested in gear as I will be looking to purchase a new bike this year.  Thoughts or suggestions?

Happy training everyone!

I'll have to look for you out there.  I was looking at your 2012 splits -- very close to mine.  In fact, I "passed" you in T2 for a 40 second lead and then you beat me on the run by a couple minutes

Sounds like a challenge

This is what I need to push me through my training!  I had issues on the run in 2012 that I didn't have in 2010.  Lessons learnt for 2014.

Happy training!

This thread's been way too quiet. Anyone with any interesting training updates?

Interesting that this race still isn't sold out. Beautiful setting, great time of year, challenging course... what more could you ask for? I'm sure if it was flat, it would have sold out in minutes!

Coeur d'Alene hasn't sold out either. I hope Whistler sells out soon or I might do something stupid like signing up for Whistler 4 weeks after I do Coeur d'Alene.

In fairness, CdA probably caps their # of participants too high, which is why they changed the swim.  And people up north have to train in some bad weather for a June race.  But Whistler I'm a bit surprised.  I guess they're splitting some of the participants with Penticton.

This will be my first IM. I can't wait. Went 4:55 at Lake Stevens last year on pretty limited training (4.25 hours per week average) I'll be averaging 12-13 between now and Whistler with a couple weeks up into the 15-18 hour range. Hopefully I can put some solid numbers up but the finish is obviously the most important goal.

I am in looking forward to it. A lot different then North Carolina, but I thoroughly enjoyed CDA in 2012 so I choose Whistler to see and race.

Hi Everyone,
This will be my 3rd IM, all in Canada. Loved Whistler last year and looking forward to beating those hills again!!

I am sort of surprised it is not sold out yet, kind of thinking it may not. Seems quite a few races aren't selling out this year.

Is it time to start swimming?

I've been running a ton and my bike has started to ramp up pretty well also. I'm lucky enough to have a small swimming background (swam a 32 and 33 min in 70.3 on less then 25 swim workouts in 2012 and 2013) so I've been putting it off as long as I can to really focus on the run. My bike power has been good and I'm definitely ahead of where I was last year at this time. I've also been putting in 2-2.5x the run mileage and that will continue to increase slowly.

This will be my first Ironman (and only 2nd triathlon), can't wait!

It is 6 days before my 40th birthday, but thankfully age group is based on end of year age, so I get to race with the slower guys in the 40-44 age group

10 weeks to go! I hope everyone's training is going well.

Who's getting excited??

How's everyone doing on the training so far? From what I've heard there has been a slight change in the bike course from last year.

If you haven't seen the bike course, here is last year's (Warning, you might get car sick)

My training is going well. I wasn't nervous, until you said it is only 10 weeks (now 9) away.

I am more concerned about the 2300km drive to the race. Driving long distances wipes me out. I get tired and lethargic.

Have you ridden the new portion? How is it if you have?

Run course has changed.  Looks like the turnaround at Green Lake comes much earlier and there's more running in the Lost Lake and Village area.  Apparently due to concerns with lighting (or lack thereof) around the Green Lake area at night.

I'm not all that familiar with the old route, but more of the course around the village means more crowd support so that's good.

But what I want to know is when is the Athletes Guide coming out?  The site says 4-6 weeks, we are at 5.5 weeks so hopefully soon...

Obviously this race is not a sell-out but based on the new participant list posted yesterday, it's not even close at approximately 2,100.

Kind of blows my mind that Florida and Arizona sell out in minutes and this one is still available. I guess flat, fast but featureless courses are preferable to beautiful courses like this one. Either that or people are afraid of a little climbing!

Hope everyone's training is going well - race day is sneaking up on us!

Rode all of the course but the flat part in Pemberton on Sunday, with rain and wind.  Rode Whistler-Pemberton-Whistler today (not all of the route through Pemberton again though) with sun and wind.  Climbs and wind.  That's my view on this course!!!  Scenery is beautiful though.  Chatted with a guy who raced last year--he said he had wind on most of his training rides there also, but that it was calm on race day.  I'm hoping for that .  Hope everyone's training is going well.

What is the participant limit? Last year was a sell out and they had 2171 participants, so this years 2100 seems pretty close to sell out. No?

I was also talking with someone who raced last year and he said the course was very windy. I think the difference is because I was speaking to someone else and he said the wind really picks up in the afternoon. So we just have to make sure we finish the bike as quick as possible to avoid the wind.

I think the 2171 was the number that showed up in race day.  Add about 15% (the DNS number) to that for the actual "sell out" number.  So 2500 is probably the cutoff.
