3 hours?  Wow.  It should take 5min,10 max.  Takes a couple times to get the tricks down...

Did you partially inflate the tube with your mouth?  Start mounting the tire where the valve is?  Hold the lever close to the rim/tire to avoid breakage.  Once I have one lever in, I insert another next to it and slide it along the rim to dislodge.  If I site on the floor, and lay the tire flat on my lap helps.

Maybe it should, but it doesn't always. I've changed a number of flats on my (recently-stolen) K2 roadie and they always took longer than 10 min. For whatever reason, those tires on those rims were almost impossible to get dislodged. Still don't know why, but there were a couple times I was ready to throw myself in traffic, esp. after breaking a tire lever (even broke one with a metal core once).

6 inches left to get on the rim, almost there these tires are soooo tight, its incredible how much force is needed for the last 5 inches, this is why I keep ruining my tubes im sure of it.

Been there. Done that. I still can't change a flat. (well, maybe if I were left alone to starve, I might get it by the 3rd day.)

(Edit to add: I'm sorry you're having such a hard time, but you made me laugh so hard with this thread title. I can just imagine P Diddy or someone saying that ... And I *have* said that.)

How the heck does he get that wheel off and back on the bike so quick?  its like the RD doesn't have any tension on it at all?

WTF?  he doesn't have a value cover on or a value screw?  Do any of you guys/gals ride with out value covers/screws in racing?

yup.  take both off

No caps.

I only use the nuts when I had my downhill bike so the valve didn't get pulled into the rim when the tire rotated on the rim from hard braking.

Not because of weight but because I am lazy and it makes changes faster.

Thats how easy it should be to get the wheel in and out. Put the chain on little/little before starting, one tip he didn't give. That was really a pretty slow change, and would have gone faster if he had taken the time to inflate the tube.

To the OP, when you get to the last couple inches go back around the wheel and pinch the tire so that both sides fall down into the center of the rim. It is a slightly smaller diameter then where the bead seats and will make the last little bit just slightly easier.

Some tire/rim combinations are just freakin hard to get together, but do everything in your power not to use a tire lever to get the tire back on so you don't risk pinching the tube.

I don't recall reading this posted already, if it has then my apologies.

Talk to your LBS and find out if they offer any classes on changing flats. A reputable shop in my area offers a variety of classes and I took their fix a flat class and it was outstanding.

I used their gear, learned exactly what to do, what not to do and now I can change a flat in less than 5 minutes and at one point in time I actually thought I might not race anymore because I was so afraid of a flat on the bike course. Having said that I haven't HAD to change a flat on the course thank god......

And if that doesn't work, ask Jesus, you mentioned he's on the way or something????

FWIW, I read the following on another thread, and it was the most helpful advice I've had. It describes getting a tire on without using tire levers (#6 was the key for me):

"1. Put in just enough air so that the tube isn't completely flat, 1/2 a pump from a frame-pump should do.

2. Install into tyre

3. Push tyre onto rim, one side fully first

4. push tube into tyre fully

5. start anywhere but at valve-stem and push other side of tyre onto rim

6. The secret to pushing the rest of the tyre-bead onto the rim is to NOT push up in the middle of the section that's off the rim. You've got to stretch the entire circumference of the tyre-bead to get it on, not humanly possible. Instead, push SIDEWAYS on the tyre at the spot where it rides on top and over the rim-edge. This lets you concentrate all your thumb-force on only a small portion of the tyre. Since 1/2 of this section is already flipped over the edge, it's not tough to push the part that's sitting on top over.

7. after you've got all of the remaining tyre on, push up on the valve-stem into the tyre to make sure that section of tube isn't caught between the tyre and rim.

8. Push sideways on the tyre so you can see into the gap between the rim and tyre. Make sure there's no tube showing. Work your way around the ENTIRE tyre and inspect every single part of the gap to make sure no tube's showing. Then do the same for the other side of the tyre.

9. Repeat #8 again to make sure there's no tube showing ANYWHERE, you wouldn't believe how many tubes we've repaired at my shop that spontaneously blew while it was being inflated, on a ride, or during the middle of the night due to the tube not being inserted fully into the tyre. These actually outnumber pinched-flats and punctures 2:1 !

10. Inflate tyre to operating pressure.

BTW - the vast majority of butyl tubes on the market, like 95% of them are made by IRC or Cheng Shin. Companies like Specialized buy them for $0.25 and put their own private-labels and stuff them into nice boxes to re-sell to shops for $1.99. The majority of the $5-10 you pay the shop for a tube just goes into their pockets."

Um...not! I can never get those last few inches of the bead back on the rim, then I fumble with the stoopid tire and rear derailleur. My fastest time is 15 minutes. If I ever get a flat in a race, I'm just DFL. (Well, I was DL in my last race, without a flat.)

Glad the tire crisis is over...

I work pt in a LBS and I'm constantly amazed that people spend 2-3000.00 on bikes/accessories. but are totally unprepared to change their own tire.   PEOPLE-ask the friendly staff of your local LBS to show you how to change a tire-we are happy to do it.  Maybe bring a plate of cupcakes.  Embrace the sport, not just the bike.

Sounds like a wire bead too - I switched back to folding bead just because the wire was such a PITA to change quickly.

Glad you got it figured out, and don't worry, you'll get better at it with time.  I've ruined a tube or 2 in my garage as well....usually with a loud bang followed by some choice verbage on my part.

IT sure was a learning experience and im going to practice changing the tire a few more times after church on sunday during football.  I kind of spoke to soon because after I got the tire on I had to put it on the rear part of the bike and that took another 25 minute trying to line up the chain and took a lot of twisting and pushing and I scratched my frame a few times.  I just need to practice these things a few more times because I dont want to get caught out 20 + miles from home.

Is it your first time? I remember the first time I tried changing a tube! I thought I was gonna break a finger. Those suckers are difficult and there definitely are some tricks to learn.

Keep working at it.  My first flat took over an hour in the rain on the side of the road.  Finally got it and then flatted again 5 min latter because I did not remember to pull the glass out of the tire that caused the flat in the first place.  Second time was only 20 min but still raining.  Now I'm down to around 5 minutes.

My first attempt at changing a tire (rear) ended in me carrying my bike home with the tube and tire hanging off. (Had left my cell phone at home since I was only going on a short ride)
and ended with my husband trying to "help" me by getting the tire on using a screw driver ARGGG!!! Totally gouged up the rim. (To say I went ballistic would be putting it mildly) Fortunately the LBS was able to file it down. LBS guy also gave me a private lesson on flat changing. Hubby won't even touch my bike now, even just to move it from one part of the garage to another.

A few tips I didn't see mentioned:

1. Cover the new tube in baby powder.  Less likely to get caught up that way.

2. It may be the tire.  My trainer tires are a b*tch to get on the wheel, but my road tires are MUCH easier.  Does this tire hold a circle shape when off the bike?  Or can you easily fold it?  If you can't fold it, it's likely going to be a b*tch to get on.  Also, is it a 700x23C or a 700x25C?  25C is a little bigger and thus easier to put on...

3. As another poster said you DO want to put a little bit of air into the tube before putting the tire on.  Once the tire is on, go around the WHOLE wheel pinching the tube and looking on both sides of it to look for any caught tube.  After you do that, put a LITTLE more air into the tire and go around pinching again looking for any tube caught up.  At that point you should be able to inflate and be bulge-less.

4. Sometimes with tough tires you need two tire levers used simultaneously to get the last 4-6" of the tire on.  Or use a tire lever in conjuction with your thumbs.  Tire levers should not break if used correctly.  But it's also worth investing in a good pair.

He cheated though - the tube was already partially inflated before he got off the bike, and he didn't have to go into his underseat bag to get anything. Not to take anything away from the speed of it (would you run your fingers through a tire that quickly on the road? NO WAY!), but he was prepared and if he had to do any of those other things, you're looking at 3 minutes.
