Outside.  Sometimes late morning when it is creeping into the 90s...sometimes late afternoon/early evening before it cools down.  I've never had a problem with it except when the temps have gotten above 95F.

I do my running outside here in Houston (well, The Woodlands) as well. I just try and get it done in the morning or at lunch. Looking at the daily temps, it's hottest around 3-5pm, so a 6 pm run will be considerably warmer than a noon run. Just watch the HR as the stress level is much different in the heat. My pace in the summer is a good bit slower than my winter runs with the same effort.

See you out there.

I live in the Mojave Desert. Where the actual temp get well above 100' (none of that index stuff).

I can do short workouts out in the sun, but I have to do early morning or early evening for the long stuff.

When I kickboxed, I would do my 20 minutes of windsprints in the 4pm sun. 90-120 minutes in the gym was actually hotter than outside, but not in the sun.

The arid desert is more comfortable that the humidity, but dehydration will sneak up on you like a ninja.

You should be tested for that performance enhancer drug known as placebo
After reading the literature on its benefit, I asked my doctor to prescribe it.
He refused.

Phoenxi AZ checking in! Well, we have the highest average temps of any major city in the US and I do all my training run/bike ouutside and during the week, most is done in the afternoon when it's 100+ everyday during the summer. It takes a while to acclimate to the heat, you need to be very diligent about hydration both during workouts and in general during the day. You need to moderate your effort a bit as well since your HR will be elvated by upwrds of 5-10bpm as your body has to work harder to stay cool. It's doable, just take it easy.

dalessit - 2009-06-18 10:40 AM here in the DC area we get the 90's + very high humidity pretty much all summer.  It always seems rough the first few weeks but after that I just get used to it.

hottest time of day is usually the 5 o-clock hour while all that heat gets trapped in from the humidity/low lying area.

x2 here.  I run at the HS track after work when it's well into the 100's I wear white and drink tons of water. If you get acclimated to heat training you can excel in it.

I didn't bother to read the other posts...

BUT, I run outside all the time here in Vegas.  I can't STAND to run inside.

Things I consider when running.

1.  HYDRATE
2.  Time of day.  Obviously earlier the better and avoid the worst heat
3.  HYDRATE
4.  Route.  I have some that have trees and some that are very exposed.  Maybe on bad days hit the shady routes.
5.  HYDRATE
6.  clothes selection.  I wear a hat all the time to cover the head and face from the sun and use lightweight breathable stuff.  No cotton.  Light colors.
7.  Did I mention HYDRATE?

Memphis TN here, and I do all my runs outside, only run inside if it gets below 40.

fuel belt, visor, sunglasses, sunscreen and no shirt= no problem

I was more comfortable running in Yuma at 110 degrees than here in FL at 90 degrees.  Then again, North Dakota at 50 below zero was worse than either.

The ninjas can sneak-up on you no matter where you are.

That's why I want to get a tattoo of Chuck Norris on my butt.

Austin, TX here.  I do most of my training outside but if the only time I've got for a workout is in the dead heat of the afternoon, I'll sometimes opt for indoor training.  I don't think a couple days a week on a treadmill will cause you any problems.

I live in Beaumont, just down the rode from Houston, and run outside year round so that I am constantly acclimated to the current temperature.  I try to run between 12-5p at least once per week.  Coming out of winter and into summer I stay acclimated due to this.  I feel it is much easier on my body to do this instead of deciding to start training in the heat during mid summer when the change will be much more difficult.  Hydration, hydration, hydration.....most importantly throughout the day.

Living in AZ i'm very used to the heat and I can't get up early enough to run...so I run right before the the sun sets (which is a fine temperature for and its just pretty scenery at sunset)...I time my run so I'm done right before the sun sets...I can't run inside, I absolutely despise the treadmill. Of course its not really applicable to races because the run is usually mid morning, oh well tho.

Yep, running in Houston sucks in the summer.  As if the 100+ temps weren't bad enough, we have 100% humidity too!  I ran at 7:30 pm last night and it was still 91 degrees...yuck!

I'm in the same boat Keri - my hubby leaves for work at 5 am (and he has Hapkido on the nights I have open for runs), so unless I wanna get up at 4 am and run around my dark neighborhood alone, I am stuck with the treadmill!  I don't think it's an awful thing...I've pretty much had to run on it at least 1x per week since I started running 8 years ago.  I know it's better to get your runs done outside, but it's better than nothing!!! (And better than heatstroke!)  Now each week, I do my 2 shorter runs indoor on the treadmill (either during my lunch break or after the kids are asleep) and my 1 long run outdoors.

There is a lot of hating the getting up at 4am.

Aside from the heat, I don't know how people can train without waking up at 4!

Outside pretty much all the time.  Today the forecast is for 100+ degrees, high humidity.  I drink lots and slow down as needed.

I live in Houston, you can do what I do which is pretty much just try and run in the shade. Is it efficient? No, especially when I'm zigzagging up and down the street and people think I'm drunk...

Except that you're slower as that humidity is like running through Jello

Yeh, it is definately a sloooooooowwwwww run.  I just like the feeling of being in the heat, battling the heat, conquering the pain, and just dripping buckets of sweat.  I know, I am weird.

I am drooling now thinking about it.  I have been injured for a long time now but am getting closer to getting back out there.
