Veteran 260 Hong Kong | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Daniel I fly G450/550. I guess Tri is kind of our nature. Pushing limits and always having a challenge. What better challenge than a full IM? This will be my first and I am pretty exited and after finishing a full mary yesterday, I have to admit I am also a bit intimidated...... Glad to see BTers checking in. Congrats to everybody registered. This blog is an AMAZING tool!!! I did my first HIM, Augusta last September, and I can't count how many things I learned and how many cool people I met. This years IMFL blog went to 125 pages before the race. I followed it and it was great!! Really important information is posted here and I encourage everyone of you to share anything concerned with the different aspects for getting ready for this race. This year I realized how ignorant I was about sports nutrition. Learning how to do things right has made a HUGE difference and I hope to improve in that department. For a reason is called the "fourth event" in triathlon. Checking out for now, got a plane to catch, looking forward to great year of training and sharing experiences with you all. As far as the weather this year in PCB, I think it was unseasonably cold due to a big cold front that was moving through. Lets hope for a few degrees warmer. There's not much we can do about it, except to be ready and adapt. DanielG - 2010-11-08 8:58 AM 1st off, what do you fly? I'm surprised at the number of pilots on here. I'm a rotorhead IP I've got B2B this weekend then I'm not doing a darned thing for a couple weeks then back to winter maintenance. Guess I'll find out if I can survive 140.6 miles Sat evening/night. |

Expert 1118 , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'm in! This is my first also. And like a few others, was totally anxious for the registration procss. In my haste to register, I inadvertently chose U.S. Coast Guard as my occupation... LOL! While that sounds very interesting and noble, I'm actually a Human Resources Analyst at a college. I have served in the Air Force, but U.S. Coast guard? Not! I've only been into this lifestyle just over a year, but have several races under my belt and about to do my second Half Iron. Will be running my first full mary in March. I plan to keep next year very light on races so that I can totally focus on training and injury prevention. Currently dealing with ITB syndrome and it has really affected my run training. Soon as B2B is over, I'll be working on full recovery. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'm in for IM #5, figured out I'm doing 3 Ironman races in 365 day...IMFL 11/6/2010, IMLP 7/24/11, and IMFL again 11/5/11. Fl will be my fifth IM and I turn 50 the day before the race.....wanted to celebrate turning 50 in a amazing race. Planning a big party next day. Don't worry about housing now unless you want host hotel/condo. You can book 3 weeks before the race as this is huge spring break/summer destination spot and it is very much off season. I have stayed at Shores of Panama 3 of 4 years I stayed here which is about 8 minute walk to transition/athlete expo. Weather is pretty consistent over all IM years here (high in 70s and low maybe upper 40s-low 60s) but this was the one year it was not normal. Today/tomorrow it will finally get back to the normal highs in the 70s ironically after most all of us leave. We have a flight out at 4 today but plan some beach time first. I have made a list of things I would do differently that I'll share when I get back home and get settled in as well as write my race report that tend to be pretty long. It will be great journey..enjoy it and you will be often fitter than you ever have been and learn a lot about yourself if you allow the experience to teach you. It's going to be awesome! |

Member 58 Boynton Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread IN IN IN!! Had a friend sign me up from the West Coast as had my son's 5th B-day party during the registration opening, and of course I was told by my wife not even to think about signup during his party (held at a local playground - was gonna have a friend bring a laptop). So Im waiting and waiting for the text that finally said "Dude....you're in..." Ahhhhhhh..... All went smooth. Recovering from ironman miami 70.3. hmmmmmm....which 1/2 iron to race for free this year? probably end up at orlando. FIRST IM....VERY EXCITED (not sure if that's good or bad, but ill go with it!). |

New user 15 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'm in for 2011. This is my first IM, after two HIMs this year (Florida 70.3 and Augusta 70.3), so I'm psyched to have this on the calendar. I traveled to the race to register in person. I was surprised slots were available online so long, which makes me second-guess the investment of time and money over the weekend...but not too much. I'm just excited I'm in and it was definitely mentally helpful to be there to see the race. My birthday is 11/4, so I rationalized the trip this year as a gift to myself for turning 42. The gift next year will be competing in the race on my first day being 43. |

Kathy G...I'm sure this will be helpful to a number of us, new and experienced both. I'll be keeping my eye out for it. Like many others, this will be my first iron distance race. Want to thank you guys in advance for all the help some of you will be providing over the next year while we prep for IM Florida. Standby for my future stupid questions!! |

Champion 7704 Williamston, Michigan | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I'm in for #5 Lots of good places to stay. I've stayed at Shores of Panama which has lots of nice options. I was at Boardwalk beach condos this year which was EXTREMELY convient esp traveling with two 72 years olds who don't get around as well as they used to. It was MUCH easier. I did not feel like I was in chaos at all. Check VRBO.com If you want board walk beach do it NOW. "expensive" is relative. When I travel to meetings I routinely have to pay $400+ a night for a hotel room so $200 a night for a furnished 2-3 BR 2-3 bath condo with a full kitchen and washing machine is pretty cheep to me. I would not race if I had to camp. (It IS a four letter word) Its just not my schitck. god bless you if it is yours. I went to IMLP in 08 and did a run thru a campground.........there were racers sleeping on the ground in tents; which no doubt floated away in the 15 hours of pouring rain they had race day. I can't imagine doing an IM and coming back to a flooded camp site much less sleeping on the ground. GAH! |

Veteran 239 Austin | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I am in, too. I volunteered this year as a finish line catcher, and was fortunate to see a number of the BTers cross that last timing mat. This will be my first full-distance. 2 HIM in 2010, Lone Star in Galveston, and Redman in OKC. Will do 2-3 more in the next 360 days prior to OUR IMFL. I followed the 2010 thread since I had a number of friends in this year's event, and to those newbie BT folks, know that you will get a wealth of information from these folks. Looking forward to celebrating a couple November 2011 birthdays (KathyG) |

First IM and I almost threw up just waiting for online registration to open up! Looking for lodging this week...I hear Shores of Panama is pretty good and I need to check out VRBO...any other suggestions? There are TONS of condos right on the race site. People are hurting to rent. I got a two bedroom, two bath for 75 a night, but it was .5 miles from the site. I had friends stay at the Boardwalk, which is right at transition, but they never really got a chance to decompress and get away from the action. We based out of a condo a friend owns about 300 yards from the boardwalk and it was perfect. Quiet, calm with a great beach. It took about 5 minutes to walk to transition from there. Not sure what the name of the place is, but they have to have over 2000 units right near the boardwalk and since it's low season it is cheap, cheap. Sunbird Condominiums. Located between Pineapple Willy's and the boardwalk. Sunbird is gated, so one of the great things is the ability to park. As irondg stated, it is pretty convenient as it is about 300 yds from the swim start. |

Veteran 593 Mandeville | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread First good luck to all competitors. We stayed about 4 miles from transition at the Sunrise Beach Resort (14825 Beach Front Road-on the bike route) and let me tell you, it was nice. We really enjoyed being away from the "action" It was a short drive or ride in when we had to go there, but it was nice to escape. Heated swimming pool (all to ourselves), 2 hot tubs, empty fitness center and a way to escape the pre race drama. 3 bedroom condos with granite counter tops, jacuzzi tubs, washer and dryer and on the real cheap. Staying away from transition isn't for everyone, but we traveled with a large group and nobody found it hard to travel back and forth on race day. Staying on S. Thomas has its advantages, but there are also some advantages to staying a few miles away. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread When deciding where you are going to stay, consider those coming with you to support you how much walking they want to do, and how convenient it will be for them to get around,. Parking can be challenging near race site especially on race day. They have a shuttle from Walmart to Alvin's Island that goes frequently early in the morning but after race start only every 30 minutes. My husband and 4 kids went back and forth from condo to race site number of times during the day so having a condo that was 8 minute walk to race site. |

Sue 'socks' stayed there at a condo this year and found it very easy for her and her parents. I'm sure she will chime in. There are other condos that are 2-8 minutes away that may be less expensive. |
